The government has apparently been forging a completely new policy to prepare for any contingencies in North Korea, an issue that is gaining fresh urgency amid reports of North Korean leader Kim Jong-il’s ill health.
A senior government official on Thursday said the previous administration maintained a secret plan to prepare for contingencies including regime collapse in Pyongyang. But another senior official said, "The previous administration's plan was aimed at keeping the North Korean system stable rather than preparing for unification. It only envisaged a minimum of administrative measures we could take.” He said the new administration “has been working out a new contingency plan under a new name. It even covers possible diplomatic measures vis-a-vis neighboring countries."
The plan focuses on the possibility that any contingencies in North Korea could lead to unification.
It also emerges that the government will resume formulation of Operation Plan 5029, a combined South Korean and U.S. military contingency plan for North Korea.

After all the backstabbing these so-called allies have done to us over the past 8 years, they deserve to be taken over by North Korea and Great Leader or Dear Leader or Dead Leader.

In 1998, I had a two week TDY in S. Korea. Stayed near Song Nam base in the heart of Seoul. Being curious, I asked a lot of questions of the U.S. soldiers, as well as a couple of the Koreans there. I was concerned about the N. Korean Army sweeping down. Instead, the general impression I got was that S. Korea knew they’d eventually have to take care of N. Korea after all the Kims died, just like what West Germany did with East. They desperately wanted to visit relatives in the North, but didn’t relish having to essentially bring an entire population out of the Stone Age.

The South Koreans are adamant for reunification...I say LET THEM.
There is a segment of population who espouse appeasement(Sunshine Policy) as a holy grail, an absolute good to be followed unquestionably. These are in their late 30's and early 40's now. A kind of American boomer left, such as Slick, Hildebeast, and Pelosi. Their whole life revolved around the faux pride that they are the only generation of conscience who challenged and defeated evil pro-American right-wing order. Anything conforming to their view is good, even the N. Koran regime. They are not interested in the factual truth that N. Korea is ruthless and brutal regime of mass murder and mind-numbing oppression. They just have to deny it because anti-North policy is one of those things making up the core of old order. This is mindless rebellion and inter-generational warfare.
Now they are about to face the ghastly truth, and face the prospect that they are accomplices to monumental crime against humanity. The stark and detailed situation inside N. Korea are out in public for all to see. Ordinary N. Koreans would hate them for at least a generation. Their moral authority will collapse for good.
And let me say once again, if the South Koreans want reunification, I say LET THEM HAVE IT.

By now, South Korea should be several times stronger than the North, on its own.
Let me guess the outcome...Rice and Bush propose a massive US taxpayer funded rescue plan but China gets the spoils and spends not dime one.

My only relative serving in the US Armed Forces is stationed close to the DMZ. Hell yes I agree! I want him home and most of his e-mails have “almost” nothing good to say about the locals, except for the surrounding areas of the base who treat the U.S. soldiers like family plus other Korean soldiers who formed a kinship with their American counterparts.
Most of the populace, especially Seoul are acting like a bunch of ingrates.

They’re not acting...they ARE a bunch of ingrates. I’m willing to do everything I can for the people of North Korea to attain freedom, but the South Koreans are a bunch of spoiled ingrates who protest against us, ban our meat, and desecrate our flag. We need to pull out completely and let them fend for themselves.
When the full truth really does come out about NK--a society of horrors that we can only dimly imagine, cannibalism stories that make the siege of Leningrad look like a night out at Old Country Buffet--there is one thing for sure: The international Left will take no responsibility for it.
It will be exactly like the Khmer Rouge. I remember reading in The Progressive that the followers of Pol Pot weren't Marxists at all, but radical Rousseauvians. They are so predictable.
