Why can’t McCain e-mail? Boston Globe explained it in 2000

Earlier today, Barack Obamas campaign released an ad attacking John McCain for not knowing how to send an e-mail. Their crack research team apparently never heard of Google or Lexis-Nexis, but Jonah Goldberg does. He discovers why McCain doesnt use a keyboard his torturers made sure he couldnt. The Boston Globe reported it eight years ago:
McCain gets emotional at the mention of military families needing food stamps or veterans lacking health care. The outrage comes from inside: McCains severe war injuries prevent him from combing his hair, typing on a keyboard, or tying his shoes. Friends marvel at McCains encyclopedic knowledge of sports. Hes an avid fan - Ted Williams is his hero - but he cant raise his arm above his shoulder to throw a baseball.

Wow talk about a “personal” attack. That’s incredible. I wonder if he’s trying to get McCain to lose his temper.
To: Free ThinkerNY
Even before learning this, I was stunned that nObama’s campaign was going down this path.
I know quite a few older women who struggle with or don’t use e-mail and computers. I think this ad will only push them towards McCain.

Please, please do not respond to this smear!.
Let the blogosphere take this and run with it. The crescendo will build and the Obama campaign will have egg all over their faces.
The MSM will probably ignore this, but maybe someone will eventually spill it. Let them confront Obama with this.

Wondering No More [Jonah Goldberg ]
Yep. The day after 9/11, as part of its "get tough" makeover,
the Obama campaign is mocking John McCain for not using a computer, without caring why he doesn't use a computer.
From the AP story about the computer illiterate ad:
"Our economy wouldn't survive without the Internet, and cyber-security continues to represent one our most serious national security threats," [Obama spokesman Dan] Pfeiffer said*. "It's extraordinary that someone who wants to be our president and our commander in chief doesn't know how to send an e-mail."*
Well, I guess it depends on what you mean by "extraordinary." The reason he doesn't send email is that he can't use a keyboard because of the relentless beatings he received from the Viet Cong in service to our country. From the Boston Globe
(March 4, 2000):
McCain gets emotional at the mention of military families needing food stamps or veterans lacking health care. The outrage comes from inside:
*McCain's severe war injuries prevent him from combing his hair, typing on a keyboard,* or tying his shoes.
Friends marvel at McCain's encyclopedic knowledge of sports. He's an avid fan - Ted Williams is his hero - but he can't raise his arm above his shoulder to throw a baseball. In a similar vein I guess it's an outrage that the blind governor of New York David Patterson doesn't know how to drive a car. After all, transportation issues are pretty important. How dare he serve as governor while being ignorant of what it's like to navigate New York's highways. 09/12 06:42 PM

"How can a man be President and be unable to throw out the first ball at a game?" Easily enough. Like any good executive, he will delegate the task to his Vice President. I think Sarah can probably throw well enough.
To: Tarpon
The sad part about this is that there were some “conservatives” here on FR this past summer, IIRC correctly they were members of the “Juan McCain” list, who said the same thing.

Same way all effective leaders deal with tasks outside their knowledge or abilities. Send a subordinate who can better perform the task. I'm thinking Gov Palin could put an 80 mph fast ball right over the plate while in four inch heals. Heck I'd even pay to see that.

Uh oh...
Last week their #2 said, "Chuck, get up so every body can see you!" Not realizing that Chuck was on a wheel chair.
Now, their #1 basically said, "McCain, why don't you use e-mail?" Not realizing that McCain's physical difficulty prevents him from using keyboards...
They surely are very sensitive to others...

This is not a slam at McCain or his injuries, so don’t start up.
Out of curiosity, does anyone kow exactly what the impairment is? I assume he can’t rotate his forearms at all, due to the injuries. Just looking at my arms and wrists while I’m typeing this, I can see that if his forearms won’t “rotate”, it would be impossible to type.
BTW, I wouldn’t do a commercial on this, I’d let Palin do it live at campaign stops. The word will get out.

There's an e-mail that's been circulating over on the liberal side, snarky remarks about McCain attributed to Garrison Keillor. It looks like the source of Obama's ad copy on this. Here's the relevant passage:
Meanwhile, the casual revelation last month that Mr. McCain has never figured out how to use a computer and has never sent e-mail or Googled is rather startling. It's like admitting that you've never clipped your own toenails or that you didn't know that toothpaste comes out of a tube because your valet always did that for you. It's like being amazed at the sight of a supermarket scanner. What world does Mr. McCain live in? Where does he keep his sense of curiosity? My 94-year-old mother has sent e-mail. Does somebody plan to show him how it's done and will they explain to him what "LOL" means?
