A Metrolink commuter train and a freight train have collided in the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles.
One car of the Metrolink train has derailed along with what appears to be the engine of the freight.
Footage of the Friday afternoon collision was broadcast from a KABC-TV helicopter over the scene.

Ouch. I’ve ridden on that particular Metrolink only once, but I take a commuter train every day here in Seattle. The possibility of the Sounder colliding with an Amtrak or freight train is very real.
Odd the LA Times online doesn’t have it yet.
I’m guessing the two fatalities were the engineers...?
Another reason I don’t ride in the lead car when I take the train.

I would suspect because the front of the Metrolink is smashed in and ripped open. The car is on its side.

I just saw a better picture of it.
I appears to be a head on collision between the Metrolink and the freight train.
The force of the impact drove the first car of the Metrolink back into the the car behind it. It looks like approximately 50 feet.
It appears as if the first car of the Metrolink primarily pushed back into the upper deck section of the second train.
The first two cars of the Metrolink are on their side.
The freight train engine is on its side and the cars behind it are scattered.

Metrolink Train Collides Head-On With Freight Train
A Metrolink train collided head on with a freight train in Chatsworth just before 4:30 this afternoon, causing one of the cars on the Metrolink train to turn over on its side. The train was heading west at the time. According to a live report on KCBS there are 20-25 people who are injured, and of them 10 are critically injured and 3 require extrication. Emergency personnel are on the scene right now.
