She’s Not Ready

By BOB HERBERT

While watching the Sarah Palin interview with Charlie Gibson Thursday night, and the coverage of the Palin phenomenon in general, I’ve gotten the scary feeling, for the first time in my life, that dimwittedness is not just on the march in the U.S., but that it might actually prevail.

How is it that this woman could have been selected to be the vice presidential candidate on a major party ticket? How is it that so much of the mainstream media has dropped all pretense of seriousness to hop aboard the bandwagon and go along for the giddy ride?

For those who haven’t noticed, we’re electing a president and vice president, not selecting a winner on “American Idol.”

Ms. Palin may be a perfectly competent and reasonably intelligent woman (however troubling her views on evolution and global warming may be), but she is not ready to be vice president.

You apparently believe that approaching voters who are on the fence with well-reasoned arguments, pointing out the strengths of our candidates and the weaknesses of our opponents, is exclusory. I call it political discussion.

If someone else decides that they disagree, I will continue to try and convince them I am right by reason and strength of argument. But I have no right as a free man to limit their free will. Free will includes the right to make choices I disagree with.

With the addition of Palin to the ticket, McCain has overcome my personal reservations about voting for him. I still strongly disagree with McCain on certain issues, but I am energized - more so than in years - because conservatism now has a champion I can believe in, wrapped up in the complex person that is Governor Sarah Palin.

Frankly, your exclusion comment is a non-sequitor. I speak to free will, and you speak to self-righteousness and exclusion. Projection is also a liberal trait, FRiend.

Gee, I seem to remember a governor from a backwater state who ran for president saying that it’s the economy stupid and that we shouldn’t spend so much time on foreign policy. Of course Bill Clinton got elected and according to the pukes at the NYT is the greatest president since George Washington. The hypocrisy in this election is unbelievable.

"conservatism is reason, not emotion."

We're human beings, not computers, and you cannot divorce emotion from any human activity, not successfully anyway. Do you really think the Palin Effect is rooted in pure logic or Euclidean geometry? It isn't.

GOTV won two elections for GWB, and this election will be no different. So, to reiterate, any conservative or Republican who sits home on November 4 should rightly be dismembered, and will certainly be blamed for an Obama victory.

P.S., don't be so snooty.

Don’t advocate murder as political discourse, and I won’t be so “snooty”. Or am I being “unreasonable”?

You don’t need to put “Barf Alert” here. Just put “NY Times”. Same thing.
