The National Constitutional Center in Philadelphia is dedicated to "increasing public understanding of, and appreciation for, the Constitution, its history, and its contemporary relevance." So naturally, it has named Bill Clinton its next chairman.
In "Dereliction of Duty: The Constitutional Record of President Clinton," the Cato Institute examined Mr. Clinton's record: Though he "has expressed support for an 'expansive' view of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, he has actually weakened a number of fundamental guarantees, including those of free speech and the right to trial by jury and that against double jeopardy. He has also supported retroactive taxes, gun control, and warrantless searches and seizures. The president's legal team is constantly pushing for judicial rulings that will sanction expansions of federal power. ... Clinton also claims constitutional authority to order military attacks against other countries whenever he deems it appropriate. President Clinton's record is, in a word, deplorable."
Cato's critique, by the way, covered his first term only. He went on to abuse the Constitution in other ways, such as issuing executive orders that allowed the government, as one wag put it, "to damn well do what it pleases anytime it damn well wants"; ordering federal agencies to ignore court orders not handed down by the Supreme Court; and lying under oath and obstructing justice.
His contempt for the Constitution arises from his belief it is a "living document" and thus open to whatever interpretation suits his fancy. That allowed him to ignore laws he didn't agree with, which is fundamentally unconstitutional. The die has been cast, but Bill Clinton is a poor choice to be spokesman for greater public appreciation of the Constitution.
Ping to a Republican-American Editorial.
If you want on or off this list, let me know.
Every time I hope we have finally gotten past the alternate-universe nightmare of the Clintonista years, something like this jumps out to bite us.
Bill Clinton as CHAIRMAN of the National Constitution Center???
Good heavens, why not appoint Vladimir Putin as “Chairman” of the “World Institute for Democratic Values”????
ROFL..I could not have said it better myself...we need a petition to prevent Clinton from getting that position. How insulting to those of us who love the Constitution as it stands.
Isn’t he banned from ever presenting a case in front of the Supreme Court? From lying under oath.
Another gig for our impeached former president.
Like they say, the Constitution isn’t a suicide pact. Maybe Bush can join Clinton after November.
And disbarred.
Mind numbing!
Isn’t Robt. Mugabe the Chairman of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development?? (as long as we are collecting mind boggling ironies)
Another of Bush’s failures: That he did not prevent this, appoint people who expose this type of “promotion” fro Clinton.
In many ways, he is “too nice” to be in power - because those who are evil take advantage of his mercy.
I wish it was true, but IIRC his consigliere and personal attorney David Kendall(?) arranged for his law license to be only suspended for a couple of years.
The dirtbag still belongs in prison.
Take a close look at the Clinton appointees and confidants. Were they people who put country first? Or were they people who had personal and, sometimes, anti-American axes to grind? A president can sell out his country’s security, and remain above the fray, by simply appointing people who will. The Los Alamos labs is only one case that leaps to mind.
That was in regard to his Arkansas license...I believe disbarment from the US Supreme Court is permanent in every case.
Without a doubt...
