United Church of Christ endorses gay marriage (2005 - Obama's Denomination)
MSNBC ^ | July. 4, 2005 | AP

Posted on 09/13/2008 3:33:46 PM PDT by xzins

ATLANTA - The United Church of Christ’s rule-making body voted overwhelmingly Monday to approve a resolution that endorses same-sex marriage, making it the largest Christian denomination to do so.

Roughly 80 percent of the members of the church’s General Synod voted to approve the resolution. They debated for about an hour before voting.

Traditionally strong in New England, the liberal denomination of 1.3 million members has long been supportive of gays and lesbians.

In the early 1970s, the UCC became the first major Christian body to ordain an openly gay minister. Twenty years ago, it declared itself to be “open and affirming” of gays and lesbians.

The same-sex resolution was submitted by the Southern California and Nevada Conference. The resolution specified that bisexual and transgender persons merit the same support and protections as gays and lesbians.

Interesting choice for Barak Obama. His wife is at the National Baptist convention in Cincinnati this weekend. I'm sure there were plenty of NBC's in Chicago to join...and they aren't gay churches now or 20 years ago when Obama joined his UCC.

Interesting choice to join a gay approving church 20 years ago.

Yep, in Revelation he says that if they don’t repent He will remove their candlestick.

Why waste a perfectly good candlestick on a church that has no light to offer?

For reasons unknown to me there are lots of atheists who insist on calling themselves....and on being called....Christians.

Obama’s church was “TRINITY UCC”, a different denomination entirely. They are into black liberation theology. Although they probably have more than their fair share of gay guys, I don’t think Rev. Wright was into making that stuff public.

The UCC stands for United Church of Christ.

The “Trinity” is just a local congregational name.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Church_of_Christ

It is about the UCC denomination (United Church of Christ) AND it mentions Obama’s church.

Wiki is the ONLY spot that claims TUCC has an actual affiliation with UCC.

My understanding is that this is a completely independent church with no ministerial or other affiliations outside the congregation.

For them it's just a name ~ a word.

"Roughly 80 percent of the members of the church’s General Synod voted to approve the resolution."
"Neither God nor the Holy Scriptures were referenced or consulted prior to this decision."

There. That's what the editors obviously left out.

It is not the only spot.

The UCC is a denomination. They wouldn’t permit their trademark to be violated.

Beside, liberation theology is right down their alley.

Trinity UCC is considered one of the largest churches in their denomination.

Only in Wiki. UCC has a problem with nailing down UCC as a trademark. First of all they never registered it as a trademark. Secondly, someone else can prove they used the terminology CENTURIES before they came along.

All the other information says Trinity UCC is a totally independent entity. Now that doesn't mean someone in that crazy bunch over at UCC isn't going to claim them, but it's enough to suggest TUCC doesn't claim UCC, which actually would be a good thing. GO TUCC, GO.

From Snopes.com

Origins:   It is true that Illinois senator (and Democratic presidential hopeful) Barack Obama has been associated with Chicago's Trinity United Church of Christ (a single church which is part of the United Church of Christ denomination) for about twenty years, and it is true that TUCC describes its congregation as "an African people" who remain "true to our native land."

Snopes is being kind. Let's see a claim of affiliation from TUCC.

Like I said, doesn't stop UCC and it's merry band of gay blades from claiming TUCC though.

Ask the pastor to POST something about denominational affiliation on his internet site.

There's never been anything on that site and I've checked it "way back when".

Just went through the site in the last few minutes to make sure it still said what it said, and it does although some things have been deleted.

UCC is not mentioned except in the name on the building.

The UCC on its own website claims Trinity UCC is one of its own churches:

Chicago's Trinity UCC is 'great gift to wider church family'

Written by J. Bennett Guess March 14, 2008

In the wake of misleading attacks on its mission and ministry, Chicago's Trinity United Church of Christ is being lauded by United Church of Christ leaders across the nation for the integrity of its worship, the breadth of its community involvement and the depth of its commitment to social justice.

Their earliest claims before they had to erase so much crap on their website related to how evil white people are claimed INDEPENDENCE.

Resolution of support for Trinity UCC from the UCC denominational website. Note paragraph 3: (case closed)

RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF TRINITY UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST IN CHICAGO, IL

Whereas, in the United Church of Christ, each local church is free to interpret God's message in their church and community, recognizing that churches may be on different paths on our journey with the Still Speaking God; and

Whereas, the United Church of Christ polity affirms the expression of these ideas in the local church when spoken in love and respect and in concern for the presence of God's reign here and now; and

Whereas, Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, IL, is a local church in the United Church of Christ; and

Whereas, in recent weeks, the media and various commentators have challenged, taken out of context and repeatedly broadcast certain controversial and prophetic statements of the Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr., Senior Pastor of the Trinity United Church of Christ; and

Whereas, the United Church of Christ recognizes that many of the statements of the Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr., call into question the commitment of the United States to be a land free from racial, economic and social division; and

Whereas, the United Church of Christ aspires to be a multi-racial, multi-cultural, open and affirming, peace with justice and accessible to all denomination.

Therefore, be it resolved that the Executive Council of the United Church of Christ, meeting this 14th day of April, 2008, does hereby adopt the following resolution:

1. We stand in solidarity with and support of the local congregations of the United Church of Christ as they live out their charge to be prophetic witnesses to church, community and society; and

2. We affirm the long-standing Protestant and African American practice of pastors exercising their prophetic roles in the pulpit, in their communities and on the street; and

3. We resist having the mission of the United Church of Christ defined by political agenda(s); and

4. We hold Trinity United Church of Christ of Chicago, IL, its members, the pastor, the Rev. Dr. Otis Moss III, and staff, in prayer during this time of challenge; and

5. We uplift the multiple (over 50) ministries of Trinity United Church of Christ of Chicago, IL, that address the justice needs of all Americans; and

6. We encourage members of the United Church of Christ and others to consider the repeatedly publicized controversial remarks of the Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr. in their full and complete context and to inform themselves about Trinity United Church of Christ; and

7. We support the call for all churches of the United Church of Christ to conduct a sacred conversation about race, with background information and resources to be provided upon request to local churches, associations and conferences.

Adopted by the Executive Council of the General Synod of the United Church of Christ April 14, 2008

Believe whatever you want about Trinity. They do nothing to clarify their affiliation on their website.

At the same time, as pagan as the UCC has become, I'm not sure they've yet undertaken a top down racist theological position (not that the won't).

Still nothing from TUCC in reciprocation. Rev. Wright seems to have not actually claimed a UCC affiliation.

I told you, UCC can say whatever it wants, and if they want to embrace TUCC, fine, but a myriad of declarations from UCC does nothing to clarify where TUCC places its allegiance.

You are being unusually obstinate. We have the denomination claiming Trinity, we have an encyclopedia saying that Trinity is in the UCC, we have the internet's major investigative organization saying that it's in the UCC, and we have a large number of articles claiming it's in the UCC.

Finally, if you take the church's ZIPCODE and put it in the "Search for a UCC Church" search engine, you come up with Trinity UCC, and the pastor's name (yet to be updated) is Jeremiah Wright. Go here: http://www.ucc.org/find/chicago-trinity-ucc.html

Perhaps you should explain just exactly why you DON'T want Trinity UCC to be a member of the UCC denomination even though the UCC claims that it is.

An excerpt from "The Pastor's Page" in the TUCC bulletin, TUCC's own publication:

The United Church of Christ has more than 5,700 churches throughout the United States. Rooted in the Christian tradition of congregational governance and covenantal relationships, each UCC setting speaks only for itself and not on behalf of every UCC congregation. UCC members and churches are free to differ on impor-tant social issues, even as the UCC remains principally

From the UCC website: http://www.ucc.org/about-us/meet-our-officers.html The Rev. John H. Thomas is General Minister and President of the United Church of Christ. He was elected at the General Synod in Providence, Rhode Island, 1999. Thomas is the presiding officer of the Collegium, is charged with the care and nurture of the spiritual life of the Church, is the principal spokesperson of the General Synod, and is the official representative of the Church in ecumenical and interfaith relations.
