That’s hilarious. I had a similar thing happen to me once which made my wife very suspicious.

I was in a hotel in Los Angeles with my wife (then fiance) and it was about 2am and the phone rings in the room. I roll over her and answer it. A mans voice says ‘Pretend you are getting a call from room service and say ‘I didn’t order anything’. So I said, ‘dude, you called the wrong room.’ Then the guy says ‘if you cannot speak freely right now say ‘no, thank you’. So I say ‘dude, you got the wrong room. Whomever you are trying to help is not in this room’.

Then the guy says ‘we have people standing by if you are in danger. If you need to get out, just say ‘no, thank you’. So again I tell the guy that he has the wrong room number and he needs to go find the right one before whomever he is trying to help IS in trouble. And I hang up.

Then I call down to the front desk and ask them if put a call through to my room and they said ‘no, nobody has called into any rooms recently through the switchboard’. So now I get a little worried that some SWAT a-hole has bad intel and thinks the room I’m in is the one his informant or undercover agent is in and they are likely to be busting through a door soon.

I tell my wife it was somebody calling the wrong room and it was no big deal. But then the phone rings again and its the same guy. This time I just start running down a checklist of ways to screw up a rescue operation (I’ve worked with a lot of cops and Feds) and I ended the list with ‘you waste valuable time calling the wrong place and get sued by busting into the room of a civilian!’. The guy seems a little stunned but not entirely deterred. He asked me who else is in the room with me. At this point, my wife is getting a little beyond nervous and wants to know what the F is going on.

I’m feeling a little bad because the guy on the other end of the phone is obviously about knee deep is what is going to be a goatf@ck cuz he doesn’t know where his asset is. So finally I tell the guy to walk down to the front desk since he is obviously inside the hotel (since the call isn’t coming in from outside and the rooms didn’t have direct-dial extensions) and check the room registrations. I tell the guy again that he has the wrong room and he had just wasted the last 15 minutes talking to somebody who is NOT in the same place as his potential hostage.

Then I ask HIM for proof. I said ‘what’s my name?’ The guy tries to get me back to answer him question so I just repeated my question and told him that if he didn’t know who I was then it was pretty much proof that he was screwing up his operation and he’d better figure out who gave him the wrong room number and get onto the right one. And then he finally hangs up.

My wife is freaking out by now. She thinks there is something going on and doesn’t know if it’s something I started or something I’m involved with since I didn’t just hang up on the person if it really WAS a wrong number. I try to explain to her that I was the guy calling the wrong room that I would hope that the civilian on the other end would set me straight so I didn’t end up getting somebody killed.

I called down to the front desk again and asked them if their were any law enforcement personnel in the hotel at the time. The kid kinda stammered a little and said that he didn’t really know. I told him to put a block on my phone and he should let anybody who asked know that I am trying to sleep and I AM the person on the guest registry.

It take a while before my wife calms down enough to go back to sleep. But I switch sides of the bed with her anyways so I’m closer to the door and can listen for sound in the hallway in case there really IS somebody intent on screwing up their careers.

The next morning I track down the hotel manager and he reluctantly confirms for me that the LAPD was in the hotel early that morning arresting somebody and apologized if it disturbed me. I asked him which floor it happened on and it was the same floor I was staying on but at the other end of the hallway.

It’s a potential career ender when you bust down the door of the wrong house. But the wrong phone number thing happens a lot more often that you’d probably believe since the error rate of transcription is about 3-4% for non-professional typists/secretaries. And when you verbally give a phone number to somebody there is a 1-3% chance they write it down wrong and a 3-4% chance the number is written in a way which causes a transcription error. (these things have actually been studied)

“Our house from street view is also seen on zillow.com. To me it’s creepy.”

Yep...mine’s there with a dollar sign on it. Wonder what year they based that on.

Interesting. Thanks!

“I don’t seem to have a “bird’s eye” option.”

Darn.

I found this site to be much clearer on yellowpages than on google and others....

sorry, guys....

"So we have air defenses on the White House but not the Pentagon?"

The roof of the White House is "hardened."

Funny thing, that. No bird’s eye option if I used your link, but if I start from scratch it shows up on the dialog box that obscures most of the map.

Once you close that box you’ve apparently forever lost that option in that session.

nully...

Yesterday I tried my daughter’s house...lots of black areas....obscured most of the map.

Today I tried...it was great. Not sure why...

What does that mean? I couldn’t find their key anywhere explaining that.

A couple of years ago I tried to look at the space tracking antennas (85 foot and 210 foot diameter) at Goldstone Dry Lake near Death Valley. I found the paved runway adjacent easily, but the dishes themselves were obviously fogged. This was on Terraserver, which was a sort of predecessor to Google Maps. I suppose this installation could have some defense or military value, but in 1963 when I went there on a visit to JPL there was no sort of restriction. We flew up in a Piper Cherokee from El Monte and landed on the bare dry lake bed next to a line of landing light stakes. Sort of like visiting the moon.

It certainly is our pleasure! You are a doll!

Yesterday we welcomed home 250 from Kuwait/Iraq to McGuire....hey, some were General Petraeus’s crew...

This morning we just fed and hugged a few hundred...they were off to Iraq....I just love all of you! And I always have tears in my eyes saying goodbye...I try not to show it, though. ;)

Tomorrow morning...0500...a few hundred more to feed and hug goodbye.

You take care! Again, thank you for your service!

xxoo
