Did ABC & Gibson Use Camera Trickery To Belittle Gov. Palin?
publiusforum.com ^ | 09/15/08 | Warner Todd Huston

Did ABC use particular camera tricks to make Governor Palin look small and powerless in their Charlie Gibson interview? I've been pointed to a blog that makes a compelling case that they did just that. Using still shots of the Gibson interview with Palin compared to similar Gibson interviews with Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, it seems this blogger has proven it to be an open and shut case of manipulation of the viewer. The writer shows how ABC used special camera placements and lenses to make Governor Palin seem small and Charlie Gibson seem overpowering and large by comparison.

By now, just about everyone is aware of Hollywood's special effects and camera techniques. There have been so many TV shows explaining them, so many DVD extras laying out the techniques that most Americans are at least a little familiar with the effects and techniques that filmmakers use to heighten and enhance their work. The anonymous blogger is familiar with these special effects, claims to work in the business in Hollywood himself, and does a great job explaining and pointing out where such effects were used to belittle Governor Palin.

Citing the anti-conservative, Hollywood hatemongering we are all familiar with our blogger remains anonymous. He says he doesn’t want to hurt his career any more than he already has being a conservative in Hollywood. So, with deference to "HollywoodTrench's blog," I'll lay out his argument for you all to decide if he has hit the spot or if he is a bit too conspiratorial for your tastes...

That’s really strange because in that picture of them walking together he doesn’t look that much bigger than her, but I just saw the interview on TV awhile ago before I read this article and at the time I thought, “WOW, Sarah Palin is TINY!” Now I see that she isn’t THAT small. The camera shot of them walking in the TV interview is definitely manipulated, too.

THERE IS A LONG HISTORY of “framing” to sell an anti-conservative message.

There is a famous GHWBush picture of him waling in from of Marine one and the sign “keep away danger” (to that effect) had an arrow framed to point to the then president Bush.

There is another famous GWBush framing of Mr. and Mrs. on a bridge in germany with teh sign “danger ahead” in the shot.

The Obama halos are not mistakes any more than AP pretending not to know about the photo fakery.

Thanks. I saw the so-called interview but was too infuriated to remember who the advertisers were.

I think werther chocolates are the best target since they would feel it most.

Snickers is still realing from their super bowl blunder. Those candies are forbidden at football parties.

Also KEEP IN MIND HOLLOWEEN IS NEAR!

There’s probably some quite appropriate literary example (that I can’t think of) but it seems the harder the Drive-By media pushes against Palin, the more it seems to consolidate and work to the opposite in building support for her. It’s analogous to pushing a wall, and with every push, it simply moves toward them. Try as they might to subvert her, they are simply creating support with every action.

Propagandists have long used this device. Careful manipulation of perspective does not so much position the subject, as it does the viewer.

Although Napoleon was only about 5'2", the painter, Jacques Louis David, has placed the viewer's eyes at the level of his belt line, implying that the Emperor is towering above the viewer, or the viewer is kneeling before him. Subtle, but powerful, and known to any experienced painter, photographer and videographer.

In many of those shots Charlie looks as if he has a massive colon blockage.

You want to know what the most delicious irony of "The Bush Doctrine" is?

Its last and greatest achievement will be the final collapse of the MSM as an influence in American politics.

That singular moment when good ol' Charlie tried to catch Sarah Palin will go down in history as the turning point of a monumental change. What Chalie and his ilk didn't understand was that Sarah has made a few million friends and admirers, and Charlie attacked their friend, and exposed the bigotry of the MSM to millions of voters, voters who will put Governor Palin in office this fall. Leading to a new generation of conservative voters, and at least 12 more years of a Republican White House.

Now we know what "The Bush Doctrine" is...

Thanks, Charlie!

...and did you also notice the Blue A** pinata hanging in the gazebo in the backround. I guess that’s supposed to symbolize all the A**es working at ABC.

It warms the cockles of my heart that in twenty years, Sarah Palin will be recognized as a major force in American politics and nobody at all will remember who Charlie Gibson was.
