Horse sense: Schweitzer speech bizarrely hands issue to Brown, GOP
Gazette State Bureau ^ | September 15, 2008 | CHARLES S. JOHNSON

Posted on 09/15/2008 9:01:06 AM PDT by george76

After his strange speech in Philadelphia, Gov. Brian Schweitzer may have just hand-delivered an issue, wrapped in red ribbon on a silver platter, to his Republican opponent and his critics.

The Democratic governor has seemingly been coasting to an easy re-election victory over Republican Roy Brown ...

Schweitzer's meteoric rise may have been slowed down a tad last week. That's when reports surfaced of his odd speech July 14 to a national trial lawyers' convention in Philadelphia in July.

"And the advantage is, you know, when you've got a governor on your side, whoa!" Schweitzer says in the speech. "You can turn some dials, and we did."

But why would a Montana governor make the integrity of our elections the butt of his joke before a national convention?

Schweitzer usually speaks off the cuff, without a prepared speech. Maybe that was the problem here.

Will Schweitzer's speech be enough to turn the governor's race around for Brown?

Probably not alone, unless some other issues surface, but that remains to be seen.

A turnaround certainly won't happen if Brown doesn't jump on the speech issue. Brown called a press conference in Helena on Friday, but to everyone's surprise, the topic was signing bonuses for teachers. Brown didn't bring up Schweitzer's speech until asked about it later.

Brown will get another shot at Schweitzer in Missoula today in the first of five gubernatorial debates statewide.

Stay tuned, as they say.

Just because they are repubbies, DON’T assume the candidate is smart.

Do NOT assume every repubbie reacts well under pressure.

Isn’t controlled by “well-meaning” (but stupid!) “media handlers” who know anything about conservatives or the real world.

Sounds like a good issue to pounce on.

Meanwhile is there a RECALL provision in state law? I saw supporters of Sen Burns ought to try to dislodge the left wing Sen Tester.

Well if he isn’t smart enough to know how to capitalize from this blunder, he may not be the best candidate for the job. In contrast, I think McCain has done a great job capitalizing on his opponent’s mistakes.

I don’t think you can recall a federal officeholder, that sounds like it would be unconstitutional. But an investigation should come forward and if it proves enough votes were suspect, Tester should be expelled by the Senate (for which they have grounds to do so) and Burns seated or a new election called. The question is whether Burns is game to file a complaint, assuming he still can.

An old Turkish saying- “Behind every joke lies the truth.”

Schweitzer is a rock star in Montana. I’ve never understood it. He’s a pretentious buffoon.

The Republicans in MT have a lot of room for improvement. The fact that BS got elected is proof of that.

Because he ran against a bigger doofus named Bob Brown.

You can’t recall a U.S. Senator, but the Senate can judge him not to have been elected and thus exclude him from the Senate, even after he is sworn in, if there’s an election challenge. While the Senate may have some internal rule that forecloses election challenges after a certain time has elapsed, certainly nothing in the Constitution would prevent the Senate from excluding Tester upon evidence of voter fraud.

However, I wouldn’t hold my breath here. We’ll have to wait until 2012 to win back Tester’s seat (unless he suffers a debilitating stroke, in which case we won’t even challenge his reelection).

That explains why Obama has been to Montana so many times.

He was counting on fraud to give him that state and it’s electoral votes.

And, of course, it’s unlikely the Dems would expel one of their members under any circumstances. Yet, they’ll expel Republican Senators like Lou Wyman of NH (in 1975), who was duly certified by the Sec of State, all because they didn’t LIKE the results. Ditto that with seating Frank McCloskey on the House side in 1985, despite having lost the election to the Republican. It’d be nice to be as ruthless as the Democrats with stealing elections and ousting duly elected members (hell, my state Dems just did it over the weekend with the lady that cast the deciding vote for the GOP Senate Speaker, and denied her a slot on the Nov ballot despite having been duly certified the primary winner).

“Attorney General Mike McGrath , because he is running for Supreme Court, should strive to appear above partisan politics,” Bozeman resident Tamara Hall said. “So I’m disappointed that he considers the governor’s own words, eight minutes in a serious address, not evidence.”

The U.S. Attorney’s office has said it is reviewing Schweitzer’s comments to see if a federal investigation is warranted.

the attorney general should have at least looked into the matter before dismissing it.
