Atlantic photographer and her 'McCain Derangement Syndrome' (Jill Greenberg)

Atlantic photographer and her 'McCain Derangement Syndrome'

September 15, 2008

This is an incredible story that pulls back the curtain on the media in a way that has never been done before.

Jeffrey Goldberg of the Atlantic Monthly wrote a very unflattering portrait of John McCain for the publication. To take the picture of McCain for the piece, the Atlantic hired Jill Greenberg, a free lance photographer.

The controversy arose when Greenberg informed her blog readers that she actually tried to take pictures of McCain in the most unflattering light possible. The New York Post has the story:

"Greenberg also crowed that she had tricked McCain into standing over a strobe light placed on the floor - turning the septuagenarian's face into a horror show of shadows.

Asking McCain to 'please come over here' for a final shot, Greenberg pretended to be using a standard modeling light.

The resulting photos depict McCain as devilish, with bulging brows and washed-out skin.

'He had no idea he was being lit from below," Greenberg said, adding that none of his entourage picked up on the light switch either. 'I guess they're not very sophisticated,' she said.

The Atlantic opted not to use the distorted McCain shot on its cover, selecting instead a more straightforward portrait. 'We stand by the picture we are running on our cover," said Atlantic editor James Bennet. 'We feel it's a respectful portrait. We hope we'll be judged by that picture.'

But Bennet was appalled by Greenberg saying she tried to portray McCain in an unflattering way.

'We feel totally blind-sided,' he said. 'Her behavior is outrageous. Incredibly unprofessional.'

Greenberg posted the outtakes on her blog as a "political statement" - including one where she gave McCain shark's teeth and had him licking blood soaked lips.

In the insular world of New York journalism, Greenberg's doings would not be considered that extraordinary - if she had simply kept her mouth shut and not bragged about how she fooled both McCain and the magazine. We've seen this kind of thing before with the picture of Ann Coulter on the front of Time Magazine that appeared to show her through a fish eye lens that elongated her legs and face. Time denied any shenanigans at the time but it was clear that they were trying to put Ms. Coulter in the worst light possible.

Now we have Greenberg and her little political drama. This will not harm her career in the slightest and I predict she will always have plenty of work from Magazines looking to do hit pieces on conservatives and Republicans.

'Incredibly unprofessional.'

How would Jill Greenberg really know what is and what is not 'professional'?

I liked her monkey portraits until I found out she photoshopped them to look more human.

This is typical. Typical. It should not surprise anyone, and if anyone is unsophisticated here, it is this idiot Greenberg. Can’t keep her mouth shut. This is what usually gives liberals away when they lie or deceive. Their lips move.

Oh, I am sure she will get lots of libs who want to use her, but NORMAL people and institutions will avoid her like the plague.

Being professional means that you do a PROFESSIONAL job no matter the race, color, creed or politics of the subject. If you cannot do that, you don’t take the job, period.

One out of three at the Atlantic with some professional morals. Not a good sign for journalism.

Translated: 100% of those involved in the writing/photography for the story were biased against McCain.

33% of those involved in the total story had morals, i.e. the editor Bennett.

66% had no morals.

A sad day for journalism, but I’ve been saying that every day since I got into journalism, 48 years ago.

...on a tangent...

Jeffrey Goldberg, who wrote the article mentioned above in the Atlantic, also wrote the following article where he blames a multitude of social ills on Walmart and the free enterprise system: The Crappiest Walmart in America

I think that was very much the point of the exercise. Your comment confuses me, but thanks for the edification that this is the same woman. She’s very talented but obviously tainted by the usual deranged liberalism.

In other words, “We did not notice that she portrayed him in an unflattering way, but now that she’s gone public, we are outraged that she spilled the beans. A true professional would have kept this a secret.”

She’s also the same photographer who made taunted kids to make them cry in order to photograph crying children. To me that is actually a whole lot worse than this.

It’s the gloating about such things that will sink Obama. It’s not Obama’s doing, but his supporters will lose this election for him.

I don't know about 'professional' but she has done beautiful work photographing the larger monkeys and orangutans. The portraits are really quite extraordinary. Perhaps she should stick to something she knows best?

GtG

I did see that picture of a child crying at the end of the Glenn Beck show on t.v. tonight. The explanation was Jill Greenberg gave the child candy, then took it away to elicit tears and then started snapping pictures.

There are way too many Americans devaluing the lives of the rest of us with deceit/lies.

Despicable. Jill Greenberg is despicable.

'We feel totally blind-sided,' he said. 'Her behavior is outrageous. Incredibly unprofessional.'...unprofessional is about the nicest thing that can be said for most of the press during this campaign - one wonders how this photographer would react if she were to go under the knife for some serious condition and her physician announced that he found her leftwing politics offensive and was not going to use anesthesia during the operation.......

Ace of Spades had fun with it. . . .

After all, if Bush is Evil, and McCain is Bush2, then. . .

She should get a Triumph of the Will propaganda award. She must have studied Nazi and Commie propaganda techniques well. They ARE taught such tricks by the “masters” in higher education.
