Palin and the Teleprompter
ABC News ^ | 9/16/2008 | Jake Tapper

Posted on 09/16/2008 6:51:37 AM PDT by markomalley

At a fundraiser in Canton, Ohio, this evening, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin had an interesting description of her speech to the Republican convention.

“There Ohio was right out in front, right in front of me," Palin said. "The teleprompter got messed up, I couldn’t follow it, and I just decided I’d just talk to the people in front of me. It was Ohio.”

This struck many of us -- who, as she spoke, followed along with her prepared remarks, and noted how closely she stuck to the script -- as an unusual claim. (Especially those of my colleagues on the convention floor at the time, reading along on the prompter with her, noticing her excellent and disciplined delivery, how she punched words that were underlined and paused where it said "pause," noting that "nuclear" was spelled out for her phonetically.)

Please note: few people who work on TV will ever bad-mouth a teleprompter. And Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., works with a prompter not infrequently.

But it's different to use one, and to use one but imply that you weren't.

Was Palin doing that tonight?

McCain-Palin campaign spokesman Tucker Bounds says no, and disputes any notion that Palin was implying that she ad-libbed the speech by saying she "couldn't follow it" on the teleprompter, so she "just decided I’d just talk to the people in front of me."

McCain-Palin spokeswoman Jill Hazelbaker says, "She was off the prompter at points."

Bounds says anyone who thinks Palin was implying that her speech was ad-libbed is unfairly reading into her remarks. Whether she was reading the speech or had it memorized, she delivered it and delivered it well, he says.

I should note that, after Palin's speech, some conservative bloggers reported that sources close to McCain had told them that the teleprompter had broken and Palin "winged it."

"The teleprompter did not break," wrote Politico's Jonathan Martin. "Sarah Palin delivered a powerful speech last night, but she did not 'wing it'..."

Says Martin, "Perhaps there were moments where it scrolled slightly past her exact point in the speech. But I was sitting in the press section next to the stage, within easy eyeshot of the teleprompter. I frequently looked up at the machine, and there was no serious malfunction. A top convention planner confirms this morning that there were no major problems."

Does "messed up" = "broken"?

Sounds like Mr. Tapper is trying to discern how many angels fit on the head of a pin, here...

Does "messed up" = "broken"?

It depends on what the meaning of "is" is.

I’m sorry, but Politico’s Jonathan Martin does not have the final say as to whether she “winged” it. The notion that he was within seeing distance of the teleprompter does not give him validity. Unless he read every word off of the teleprompter instead of watching her delivery, he is overstating his ability to say whether the prompter was working or wasn’t.

ANYONE..and I mean ANYONE who follows the news at all knows what happened that night. The teleprompter was ahead of the speech because of the lengthy applause....We were told that the pitbull comment was adlibbed...that’s all....We assumed she knew the speech or the teleprompter was back to normal. These people are incredible. Has Jake Tapper ONCE talked about how Barry can’t speak without one?

Last night ABC news was trying to defend Gibson. They said that he was leaned back looking down his nose “because he was using his glasses” and that it was unintentional.

They also said that there was no “Gotcha” questions, and then tried to defend the “Bush Doctrine” question. Then they claimed Palin lost it on the question. But she answered it with a smile.

Think about it this way:

These media elites are scared to death. Why you ask?

Well... if Obama is elected and the Dems have majorities in Congress and the Senate we will probably see some type of fairness doctrine put in place.

That would take a chunk out of the new media and people would be forced to turn to the old media. ABC,NBC,CBS.

Without the fairness doctrine the big three will soon see a decline the likes they’ve never seen before.

Many, like MSNBC could soon be out of business without the fairness doctrine.

The day after her speech, it was reported that the teleprompter just kept on running during the lengthy applause periods, so often the teleprompter was way ahead of her in the speech.

I really suspect the nimrod running the teleprompter was a Democrat saboteur plant. It doesn’t take a genius to push stop during applause, and push resume as the applause dies down.

Giuliani was the first one to say there were teleprompter problems that night. He said it quit during the early part of his speech.

there was no serious malfunction

Martin wasn't the one who was trying to speak from the teleprompter. Thus, it would seem Martin can't really say whether the sputtering teleprompter might affect the speaker.

“But it’s different to use one, and to use one but imply that you weren’t.”

This Tapper clown is really bottom feeding to find something negative to say about Governor Palin.

While watching her speech, I noticed a couple of times that she was glancing down at papers in her hand and wondered why she’d do that while using a teleprompter. But what is remarkable is that there is no doubt that the teleprompter was out of sequence at times, but it never rattled her and she delivered her speech seamlessly.

This “journalist” really needs to upgrade his subject matter.

The “news media”, having demonstrated it has no competence at reporting news, now resorts to making the news up. Mr. Tapper and his first-rate political reporter cronies now decide that there was no problem with the teleprompter.

Journalism is no longer practiced here. The universities that are turning out this junk should close their journalism departments and reallocate the money.

The news media are hovering around Sarah Palin like vipers waiting for the slightest opening or sign of weakness before striking. I have never in my adult life seen anything like it. There is no interest in her ideas, her character, or her family unless it presents an opportunity to attack.

My impression is that virtually 100% of the mainstream media coverage of this very popular woman has been negative. Can anyone show me a positive story about Ms. Palin in the DBM since she was named by John McCain?

Frequently?! Three times ... five ... ??? Even if this Martin maroon was “closely” following the teleprompter his point is illogical. How can he discern what portions of the speech were read from the telepromter? Regardless, even with “minor” glitches Palin may have opted to wing it.

Joe Who? September 14, 2008 6:22 PM When Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama's running mate Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del., walked onto the Denver stage at his party's convention the evening of Wednesday, Aug. 27, the spotlight of the entire nation was shining solely on him. Less than 48 hours later that had all changed with two words: Sarah Palin. Almost as soon as word leaked on Friday morning that the little-known Alaska governor had been picked as Republican nominee Sen. John McCain's number two, the attention paid to Biden quickly vanished into the Mile High air. Since the Delaware...

What’s really stupid about this pathetic attempt to discredit what has been a complimentary story of the governor is that, no matter whether the teleprompter was out of sequence for long or short periods of time, the speaker has to decide whether to go from memory and the handwritten copy, or to continue relying on the teleprompter. If a speaker tried to go back and forth from the teleprompter, it would be obvious because of stalls and breaks in the speech. But there was none of that. I believe she departed from the teleprompter for significant stretches, which would also explain the couple of times she looked down at the written copy.

“If a speaker tried to go back and forth from the teleprompter, it would be obvious because of stalls and breaks in the speech.”

I think that explains why Giuliani’s delivery sometimes seemed so out of cadence. Palin was fortunate in having so many applause interruptions, as it gave her repeated opportunities to glance at her written copy and then deliver the next few lines by speaking directly to the audience. So I concur she relied far less on the teleprompter than this reporter would have you believe.

Much was made 14 years ago of Bill Clinton’s “amazing” performance in winging the first 5 minutes of his health care speech due to a teleprompter malfunction. Admittedly, the error occurred since the chronically disorganized and undisciplined Clinton literally was still editing the speech while being driven to Capitol Hill to deliver it. Nevertheless, the “take-home” lesson for MSM was what a gifted politician Clinton was to have pulled this off this miraculous stunt with no one in the audience realizing it.

In the eyes of the MSM, a small town hockey mom from the wrong party obviously cannot possibly be viewed in the same league as the superheroes of the Democratic Party who so obviously are more deserving of holding the reins of power.
