Michelle Obama joins Food Network's Paula Deen to fry shrimp for cooking show

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) _ Michelle Obama took a break recently from the campaign trail to get her hands messy breading shrimp as she helped prepare a deep-fried dinner with the Food Network's first lady of Southern cooking, Paula Deen.

The wife of Democrat Barack Obama got cozy with Deen in the kitchen during a recent taping of the Savannah celebrity cook's TV show "Paula's Party," scheduled to air on the cable network Sept. 20.

Michelle Obama and Deen swapped stories about their families' favorite meals as they cooked fried shrimp and french fries at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va., where the network converted a cafeteria into a TV kitchen.

"She was getting her hands dirty," Deen said in an interview Friday. "I think they are like us — they like real food, not a bunch of prissy food."

Obama told Deen her husband's personal favorite is a steaming bowl of chili, and the first meal she ever cooked for him was a seafood gumbo. Deen, one of the Food Network's biggest stars, traveled to Norfolk for the taping three weeks ago.

Ooooh, I had to look that one up. Now IT’S in my file, sigh. I have always LOVED Banana Pudding. It’s a childhood comfort food memory. Now I gotta make THIS one.

You’re right, I’ve had much better luck with her desserts. In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever tried a main course recipe from her. But, for all her lack of judgment, (Jimmy Cater and all that), she DOES have a knack for the decadent, yummy, heart destroying dessert thing.

I’ll bet Michelle has never even heard of Filet Powder and thinks a Roux is something you buy in a jar.

No doubt, she's never heard of file powder, but you actually can buy roux in a jar. I've never used the stuff, but a lot of people have told me that it's good. Sounds crazy, I know. :)

Mihelle is VERY busy off camera - telling gay groups Barry will do away with “don’t ask, don’t tell...” and telling military families that Barry will up the socialistic processes inherent in military medicine to “solve” all their problems (not!) - she’s out there quietly passing out “gimmes” to groups as a policy maker - again, we’re getting two for one!!!

Last Christmas I made her Chocolate Peanut Butter Cheesecake. It was a graham cracker crust, chocolate layer, then the peanut butter cheesecake layer, THEN a chocolate ganache. It was a giant peanut butter cup! So rich that no one could have more then a sliver at a time, but it was wonderful!

It's file', as in Zataran's Gumbo File', (pronounced fee LAY).

I think the Palin invite was CYA as well. Lest we forget how the left views people who dare not fit the image that has been politically constructed for them, here's a blast from the past...

Apparently, in 1994, Paula Dean had Julianne Malveaux on her show. She just happened to mention Justice Thomas:

"The man is on the Court. You know, I hope his wife feeds him lots of eggs and butter and he dies early like many black men do, of heart disease. Well, that’s how I feel. He is an absolutely reprehensible person."

OK, so maybe it wasn't on Paula Dean's cholesterol fest but the quote is real. And reprehensible.

On one of her shows she poured a melted butter sauce over fried chicken.

Okay, dang it!, I had to look THAT one up. My son Jon, that boy would have turned into a Reece’s Peanut Butter cup if I hadn’t kept a firm hand on the boy while growing up. NOW, sigh, I gotta try this one on him the next time he comes home for a bit of his mama’s good cooking.

If I make the goodies for HIM, and the other kids and the grandchildren, lol, that saves ME from being alone with the stuff. It DOES call to me, you know. In the middle of the night I hear, ‘pattyjo, pattyjo, I’m here, and You KNOW you want me.’ LOL, and I almost always answer the call..... if I’m foolish enough to have it there.

You know, I know this stuff is not designed to build good physical health in the body, but it DOES, in limited amounts, promote lovely feelings in the heart. Even better, when evil grandma pattyjo, plies little grandkiddies with goodies their own mama tells them is soooo bad for them. I get such a charge out of that. Yes, I’m bad. ;)

cheers, pattyjo

Julianne Malveaux is a bitter, mean angry woman. That quote was an indication of the cancer of bitterness and anger that infests the souls of so many on the left, especially the far left. Really defines just who she, and others like her, are as human beings.

These people REALLY need to be beaten down and DEFEATED. We’ll never, unfortunately, be able to eliminate folks like her. There will always be these angry losers out there, so full of their own sense of personal rectitude that they see nothing wrong in wishing pain, disease and death on those they disagree with. We need to stay alert and on message.

(even though a break to share some really yummy recipes DOES help keep us sane.)

I’ve made that pudding, it’s pretty good. I agree about her deserts being better - some of the regular meals taste sort of bland. I do like her Chicken Georgia.

Yeah, I liked her a lot better before the Jimmy Carter episode, and now THIS. When will these entertainment people learn that as soon as they get politcal, they lose a good portion of their fan base?

Here ya go!

http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/paula-deen/not-yo-mamas-banana-pudding-recipe/index.html

I made it at Christmas a few years ago and took it by my mom and dad’s. I had an armload of stuff and my mom said I could leave that dish there since I was coming over the next day (my mom does a big party on Christmas Eve and a relaxed early dinner on Christmas Day). When I went back the next afternoon she said, “I hope you don’t mind, but we had some of the banana pudding for breakfast.” LMAO

My brother is a professional chef and he doesn’t care for baking. We joke that he got the cooking gene and I got the baking one. So, I am never sure if her regular recipes aren’t turning out because of me or the recipe.

There is a lasagna recipe she has that was sort of okay. I don’t remember the name of it, but it had several (seven, I think) different types of cheeses in it. I only made it once, because the cheese didn’t melt very well inside of it. It did use a homemade sauce that I remember being very, very good.
