Democrats are demanding an investigation into a recent surge of Republican registrants in San Bernardino County, claiming voter registration fraud belies the numbers. Members of the San Bernardino County Democratic Party are holding a news conference today to discuss their claims and urge authorities to take action.
Mark Kirk, an executive committee member of the county's Republican Party, denied his party was involved in any illegal or unethical action.
"Their claims have more to do with their disappointment in the registration numbers than anything," he said Tuesday. "It still wouldn't make a difference. We'd still be a red county."
The county has long been dominated by Republicans. In 2002, they outnumbered registered Democrats by 60,000. That gap narrowed to 30,000 in 2006. By May, it was down to 5,000.
As of Tuesday, county Registrar Kari Verjil said there were 303,531 registered Democrats and 307,132 registered Republicans.
Lessening the gap had emboldened the county Democratic Party over the past year, which has traditionally worked behind the scenes rather than front and center.
"We had come so close to overtaking the Republicans in voter registration that for the past 14 months we've been tracking it every week," said county Democratic Party Chairwoman Carol Robb. "This was the first time in 14 months that it went the other way."
She and fellow party members called hundreds of newly registered Republicans and went through a two-page questionnaire with 33 people. Most of the numbers were no good, Robb said. Twenty-seven people were surprised to learn their party had been changed to Republican, Robb said.
Verjil, who turned the complaint and supporting documentation over to the California Secretary of State's Office and the district attorney's Public Integrity Unit, said she is doubtful voter registration fraud has been occurring because she hasn't received calls from upset voters.
Most of the alleged voter-registration fraud occurred when members of Young Political Majors asked people to sign a phony petition to increase prison time for sex offenders outside of Wal-Marts and Chaffey College, according to the Democratic Party.
Voters were either asked to sign as a Republican after being promised it wouldn't change their political party or were asked to sign in two places, one of which was a Republican registration form, Robb said.
ROTFL .... facts and these people are such strangers.
First, I don’t really believe this, since that’s THEIR tactic.
Second, how does changing anyone’s registration to Republican, Democrat, or Scientologist have any impact on how they will actually vote in November (i.e. what’s the point?)
That’s nice...cry foul when large number of republicans register but don’t when large number of dem’s register...irony????
I never knew ACORN did work for the GOP. < / sarcasm >
Didn’t Reagan take CA?
Hey, my daughter is a student out at CSU San Bernardino and She registered Republican this year! Maybe they just can’t figure out that their “team” just isn’t the “A” team after all!
Reported Yesterday (exact words!) (some of them)
Donna Brazile, Al Gores campaign manager in 2000, is used to this bed-wetting phase of the campaign. Democrats are notorious for whining.”
Take that Charlie Gibson
COUNT EVERY VOTE! COUNT EVERY VOTE!
Oh, they’re Republicans? Never mind.
Voter fraud is when dead people and people who have since left the county/state are voting for the Democrats 100%.
Another example of voter fraud is aliens from Canada and Mexico voting for the Democrats because they have driver's licenses. They some how seem to vote 100% for the Democrats as well.
That is real voter fraud and it happens in every big city in America.
This makes me wonder if they're changing registrations to Rat in an attempt to
create controversy over their eventual loss.
