There are different rules and regulations concerning forums that run paid for ads and forums based on donations. I am not familiar with all of that but know JimRob wants to keep this a donation only forum.

Too bad we don’t have some super rich donators to give us a boost. But, who knows, even the size of the donation could come under some regulations??

“There is no known entity in all of computer science which is faster than a flat file structure, especially once it’s been cached in RAM [and, better yet, cached at local ISP caching infrastructures throughout the nation].”

Depends on the volume, flat files kind of become a bear once the amount of information reaches a certain size.

If you, for example, want to look up all post that I have ever put up in a flat file system, have fun. people dont often consider how relation systems enhance lager sites.

If you setup a RDB correctly (indexed correctly, optomized) it will on large load systems smoke flat files. And given the complex querey uses that many on FR have the difference would only be more pronounced..

Very PC response, but I'm afraid that this is not the time for the supersensitive crowd.

The overwhelming majority of those "until-recently-inactive" are sleepers... the subtle contents of their suddenly revived interest in FR is a red flag for me every time.

I run a group of SQL servers that are back-ends for a web presence for a living and this particular demand made at this particular time is a little impractical

It's not impractical at all.

You turn the old servers into "read-only" mode, to serve as an archive of the old threads, you bring up your new flat file servers [with something similar to the original flat file Free Republic code - 25 or 50 posts per page], you LDAP your user accounts and passwords over to the new servers, and you go live.

It's entirely doable, and it's what this site is going to need to withstand the Nut Roots attacks it will be facing over the course of the next two months.

That, of course, plus mirroring - there must not be a single pipe serving as a single point of failure when the sh*t starts hitting the fan in the next few weeks.

I mean - good grief - these kooks just broke into two of Sarah Palin's private email accounts at Yahoo - bringing down a relational database, attached to a single pipe out of California, would be a day at the beach by comparison.

We have had a huge influx of new ‘freepers’ in the last few months. Some of their agenda’s are questionable. Perhaps a freeze should be put on NEW sign-ups until after the election.

That's just utter and complete nonsense.

RDBs max out at thousands of transactions per second.

Flat file structures, on gigabit ethernet, max out at MILLIONS of transactions per second.

Relational databases are death to efficiency.

Umm... Horse crap.

Anything much more complicated than an address book had better be implemented in a well-indexed, well-normalized RDBMS if you expect it to do anything particularly useful.

Do you think 99.99% of the business world uses relational databases because they're inefficient? I mean, really.

Besides, I don't think the Robinsons have a crack team of (flat file???) DB administrators sitting around ready to re-architect their entire system.

I’m in for the monthly thing. Out of sight, out of mind. Then, when I download my financial data it’s all there.

But as you say, it’s whatever makes you comfortable. And in addition to my monthly, I donated a little something a month or two ago. It doesn’t hurt to keep the pump primed...

What I read into it is that the "freeping" of polls is almost always a waste of time and a distraction, often pulling us into "Have you stopped beating your wife" sites by --- who else?

I'm not sure how this could be. It often takes no more than 10 seconds to click on a poll link, vote, then return to FR.

I look on it as not allowing leftists the sole voice on the internet -- and just possibly discouraging a few or painting a different picture for the MSM, as leftists tend to think the whole world adores Obama. You can sense their shock when even online polls don't turn out as they "should" or when conservatives make pro-McCain/Palin comments (how dare they!). I just don't see how Freeping a poll could possibly do anything but help.

Well my source is a VP of IT for a major financial institution on Wall Street.

He or she is having big doubts about Obama and the divisive campaign being run by Obamas radicals.

I think you have really pegged what the Obama campaign is all about and that is intimidation.

Obama should be a wake up call to all Americans but I am afraid that patriotism is having to take a back seat to Bitch Slapping Rap and selfish me to politics.

As things really heat up in October & November, I'd consider banning [temporarily] all non-political content, and instituting an aggressive policy of putting on probation the accounts of users who post lengthy, inane, unfocused, meandering, off-topic soliloquies ...

I assume you mean like this one?

What you mean is Chicago machine politics. That's what we're seeing. And when Obama told McCain "You ain't seen nothing yet" or words to that effect, he meant what he said.

Everything that's happened has been at his behest. It's his political meme. And it's going to get worse, especially when the GOP polls as strong as it has.

Just as I said there are ways to manipulate polls.

The other day on CNN they ran a poll on (I forget now but I think it was on Palin)and with in a couple of minutes that the poll was up the anti Palin votes were something like 29,000 or so No to 1,700 Yes.

I don't doubt for one minute that these polls can be manipulated by real smart but common sense dumb, radical muck diving godless liberal nerds.

You people can pray for your d*mned kitties on your own time.

Um, this is my own time.

Last time I looked Jim Robinson didn't mind having prayer threads on this forum, especially since he himself has been the recipient of thousands of prayer posts and he can attest to the power of prayer on this forum.

Frankly I have no idea what your point is here. Maybe if you prayed for more bandwidth instead of going into a panic over the Obamaniacs, then maybe you'd accomplish some good here.

This forum has survived quite nicely for a decade without your leadership. And there are hundreds of Freepers who sincerely appreciate that this is a place where you can not only discuss political issues, but where we can pray for each other, pray for our country and PRAY FOR OUR KITTIES!

Honestly, I don't know half these people who are suddenly appearing who have a sign up date of years ago. New people, or casual posters are fine - and welcome - but I too question whether or not we have a whole boatload of sleeper trolls around here.

You are a flat file bigot and the discussion kind of ends there. RDBs and distributed/mirrored/synchronized RDBs are not what they were in 1980.

Even if the conversion were a good idea and technically sound the wisdom of launching into one a month before the election is kind of non-existent.

The Daily Machine is about as crooked as as a snake.

Not to take sides with the Daley machine, but Obama is more a product of Cook County/Illinois State politics, IMO. He and Daley have had issues before.

That being said, Illinois politics is a disgrace from both quarters. Below I-80 and West of the Chicago urban sprawl, Illinois is more conservative in nature (oh, there are pockets of socialism for sure). But when you get to Cook County and its influence on Illinois politics, socialism reigns supreme.

I use Firefox and am having the sames problems I had before upgrading to 3.0.1. The upgrade is not the issue. Mainly, when I hit a link it comes up with a blank page. Once I hit refresh it (mostly) opens the page I wanted. That happens when I link to threads, as well as go to make a response. I’d put it at about 40% occurrence.

That’s the one issue I’ve seen in the past few weeks, except for the big downtime of a week or so ago.

Now, I haven’t tried FR on IE to see if that reacts different, and I’m not going to. I only have IE due to Microsoft Update needs. And that suits me fine.

What’s all this flat-file talk? You lose a lot of good features with that.

Flat files of 50 posts each? What if I do a search of anything? The application is going to have to search through possibly gigabytes of flat files. Relational with indexes and foreign keys does that fast.

Replication by shipping files? If you’re think of a master/slave setup (one server writes and replicates the data to the others, which can be read from), any active thread is going to result in shipping old data. On average, you will ship 1/2 the average file size unnecessarily times the number of active threads. MySQL can be set up so the slaves periodically (even every minute) access the log on the master and read in only the new data.

If you’re thinking of a cluster (all servers reading and writing), forget it with flat files, it’s just not practical.

And most importantly, with flat files you lose enforced data integrity below the application level. It’s dangerous.
