Michigan's unemployment rate rose to 8.9 percent in August, according to a monthly report released Wednesday.
That's up from 8.5 percent in each of the previous three months, which already ranked as worst in the nation. The national jobless rate for August was 6.1 percent.

Are the only employed people in Michigan working in the casinos? I am wondering if anyone can add to this thought: when Engler was governor in Michigan, we did not have this overload of casinos. Business was booming and pretty much anybody who wanted to work had a job. Now we have an overload of casinos with the promise of more to come and we have the worst economy! What is the connection? I think there is one, but I would need proof somehow to actually say so. IMO—casinos are nothing more than toilet drains in the state of Michigan. All the money that is wasted by retirees and the down and out crowd, could have been better spent buying durable goods, eating out, vacationing(for real), buying a car(american made) or maybe even helping their families or grandkids go to college. Maybe I am wrong, but I think not.
I live in Michigan and the City of Lansing for one just laid off hundreds of seasonal employees that in turn filed for unemployment. This may have happened all around the state and account for the increase. Seasonal job holders knew their position was limited and many will find other seasonal work soon.
Not this Michigan gal!
Ask Joe Biden, it is Patriotic to pay more taxes... tax us back into prosperity.
Priceless.....
I laughed, and laughed, then I smiled and I laughed again. Thanks.
For anyone living in Michigan... who gets the blame for the poor economy? I know there is a Democratic governor but do they blame her or point the finger at Washington?
vaudine
Back in the 60s, the Mich license plates used to say
“Winter Wonderland” one year and “Water Wonderland” the next.
We used to call it the “Water Winter Welfare Wonderland”
I don't think the casinos have had much negative effect...particularly on the unemployment rate. Michigan's poor economy is based solely on the automotive problems, and Granholm's foolhardy raising of small business taxes. If anything, the casinos have kept some money in the area that would've gone to the Windsor (Canada) casinos right over the bridge/tunnel from Detroit. Michigan needs to diversify its economy, plain and simple. When America gets a cold, Michigan has the flu. When America is doing well, Michigan has usually exceeded the nation. Very volatile economy due to the auto industry. Housing and the economy were booming in Michigan in the Engler years, but I doubt casinos have any effect on the downturn.
Where state Democrats have made
unemployment a career choice.
You need to understand: Detroit is the dem base, not the rest of Michigan—I just wish Detroit went with Canada!
there is a house i have been waiting 15 years to go up for sale....it is up for sale and i cannot even think about buying it....i could never sell my current house, there are no buyers out there
As I hear it, there has been talk of providing loans to the same auto industry for re-tooling. Is this really the answer? The problem with the auto industry is a union problem—too many. The unions negotiate what works for them, and generous motors continues to take care of themselves at the expense of the rest of the workers in Michigan. It is hard to understand how someone can work in a somewhat unskilled labor position and make $30+ dollars per hour and then have the cadillac of health insurance/retirement benefits to boot! Delphi and American-Axle workers are losing jobs now, and if they get to keep a job they are working for less than $20/hr. I think Michigan does have to diversify, but if loans are coming to Detroit then I don’t see a diversified approach coming in jobs. They will still need a manufacturing base to promote a re-tooled product.
Well done Michigans! Pls keep voting for the RATS!
Thanks!!
The #1 reason Michigan is in the shape its in is due to Free Trade. Bad trade deals always affect our industrial base, first.
Michigan’s problems would be allieviated by going back to market-based trade...and emphasizing American products over foreign products
The high taxes dont help...but when you re-distribute wealth overseas....those still left with money in Michigan (and elsewhere) are going to pay more in taxes just to keep basic givt functions going.
