Historic Shift Toward Democratic Party Continues

WASHINGTON - September 18, 2008 - Democratic candidate Barack Obama holds a substantial 21 point lead over Republican John McCain among Arab American voters. This was one of the findings of a poll of Arab American voters conducted by Zogby International for the Arab American Institute.

You might get a kick out of this, go spy out McCain's website, and visit the "Get Involved!" section. You register on-line, and then when you visit you are asked how you'd like to help out, bla bla. One of the things is if you are part of a particular interest group, such as Hispanics, women, students, so on. One of the categories is, get this, "Muslims for McCain".

Now, mind you, I'm glad McCain is trying to reach out to Muslims, but I really doubt Muslims are trying to reach back. Well, maybe not empty-handed, at least...

Noting that Arab Americans in Michigan represent about 5% of that state's electorate, while in Virginia and Ohio they comprise almost 2% of the vote, he noted that "the strong shift from Republican to Democratic party identification can play a role in close contests." In 2000, the overall Arab American vote was 44% Bush, 38% Gore, 13% Nader. In 2004, it was 63% Kerry, 28% Bush with 8% for Nader. About the Arab American Institute Founded in 1985, the Arab American Institute (AAI) is a nonprofit organization committed to the civic and political empowerment of Americans of Arab descent. AAI provides policy, research and public affairs services to support a broad range of community activities.
