ACLU Sues Michigan Over Voter Purge Program, Saying It Hurts College Students
U.S. News & World Report ^ | September 18, 2008 | Liz Halloran

Posted on 09/19/2008 1:30:06 PM PDT by Baladas

The American Civil Liberties Union announced today that it has filed a federal lawsuit against Michigan electoral officials over what the organization characterizes as two "statewide voter purge programs" that it claims would "disenfranchise hundreds of thousands of Michigan voters"—many of them college students—in advance of the fall presidential election.

The legal action comes two days after Democratic nominee Barack Obama's campaign and the Democratic National Committee filed a lawsuit against Michigan over another voter-exclusion practice—using home foreclosure lists to challenge a person's right to vote.

The lawsuits suggest that ballot battles in the key battleground state have just started to heat up.

The ACLU suit, which targets Michigan's Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land, a Republican, as well as the state's elections director and the city of Ypsilanti's clerk, charges that two practices by the state are illegal: one in which the state immediately cancels the voter registrations for individuals who obtain a driver's license in another state, and one in which local clerks nullify new voter registration applications if mailed voter cards are returned by the post office as undeliverable.

Michigan law states that the voting adddress and driver’s license (or state issued ID card) address must be the same. If you get an out-of-state drivers license, you just forfeited the right to vote in Michigan. Also, if you register using an address that doesn’t work two weeks later when the voter card is mailed, it seems to me you never lived there.

Should people who happen move in October forfeit the right to vote in that year's presidential election? That would hardly seem fair.

IMHO, the proper approach would be for the person who moved in October to cast an absentee ballot; on Election Day, the state where he had previously lived should check with his new state to confirm that he was not yet eligible to vote in its elections (the simplest way to handle that would be for the new state to include on its registration record the date when he'd become eligible to vote there).

When my daughter registered to vote at the DMV (department of motor vehicles), she later went to vote in our city elections and was not on the voter rolls. She called the city official in charge of voter registration and she was told that just because you register to vote at the DMV, they don’t have to turn the applications in. WHAT?? So now she has to drive downtown to register in person. I’m just glad that it happened in time to be corrected before the federal election. However we are now stuck with a really bad mayor. I wonder how many people this happened to?

In the 2004 election, some students students at the University of Wisconsin, Madison and Marquette University, Milwaukee, boasted and joked openly about voting at their college address and absentee at their home town addresses. This, together with massive voter fraud in the black areas of Milwaukee, was probably just enough to give Kerry the narrow victory he had in that state. As it was a case of voter fraud favoring their side, the MSM ignored, and continues to ignore, this important story. Let's hope the Republicans are ready this time out and will challenge dodgy registrations to the full extent allowed by the law both in the run-up to the and at the tables on election day.

I lived on campus 45 minutes from home and voted absentee. (Ronald Reagan, 1980)Just saved time and trouble.

There is no reason why anyone shouldn’t be able vote absentee and have the votes apply where they want them applied, unless of course “someone” was counting on the cheat votes. Students should only be voting where they are considered to be permenant residents.

Thanks! Good info to know.

The Sec’y of State (we don’t have a “DMV” in Michigan) and welfare offices do indeed offer, even promote, registering to vote. I’ve been registered to vote since, hmm, my 18th birthday or thereabouts, and have never had any trouble, but then, I live in western Michigan, not Corruptica. :’)

Gee, I didn't know they cared, but since they do, here's a splendid idea!! How about the ACLU filing suit against the State of NM, Governor Bill Richardson, ACORN and the Motor Vehicle Department to stop the voter fraud against ALL Americans.

Because Governor Richardson authorized the Department of Motor Vehicles to give NM driver's licenses to illegals, we now have illegals in America who can vote. We are talking about massive voter fraud. Once illegals got their licenses, they could go register to vote, using their NM driver's license to register. If you think it stops there, oh-no, it gets worse. Then illegals can go to other states and obtain driver's licenses in those states by showing NM driver's licenses. Once they get a license in that state, they can register to vote there too. NM has four states that touch at Four Corners. Conceivably, a person could spend a couple of days and register in all four states. All this money Obama has been raising is no doubt going to transport illegals around having them register to vote. All they need is a common address and they can request a ballot to vote by absentee ballot, and they don't even have to go back to that state again.

CO and NM are two of the states where electoral votes are up for grabs in the election so you can bet they are doing everything possible to hand the election to Obama. A few years ago the GOP went to court in NM to force the Motor Vehicle Department to turn over the records of the names of illegals who were granted licenses and the courts shot it down. It was a liberal judge who did it. The courts said no, Richardson refused and MVD didn't give us the names. As you might guess, the GOP dropped it and it's been several years since it started.

Every illegal in America knows they can get a license in NM. You can bet Soros has been fronting the money to take all of these people around the country signing up in all 50 states. Who knows, this year they may be signing up in all 57 states. LOL So, when you hear the DemonRAT party bragging about how they have signed up millions of new voters, you can bet that hundreds of thousands of them, (or more) started in NM.

Governor Jennifer Granholm (D) has been blowing her own horn out there with claims of bringing home the bacon in the form of jobs and business from companies around the world who are supposedly falling all over themselves in a clamour for tax incentives. It’s all hype, all bullsh*t and for appearances sake only. She’s anticipating an Obama administration and the changes it will bring for her. She’s making her escape plans, thinks she’s been to the mountain top, seen the promised land...HOWEVER, the only promised land she sees is the promised land of Washington DC. In Jennifer Granholm’s (D) eyes, Michigan is a peon state and she knows that it may indeed serve her well as a mere stepping stone to the “promised land”.
