WASHINGTON (AP) - Deep-seated racial misgivings could cost Barack Obama the White House if the election is close, according to an AP-Yahoo News poll that found one-third of white Democrats harbor negative views toward blacks—many calling them "lazy," "violent" or responsible for their own troubles.
The poll, conducted with Stanford University, suggests that the percentage of voters who may turn away from Obama because of his race could easily be larger than the final difference between the candidates in 2004—about 2.5 percentage points.
Certainly, Republican John McCain has his own obstacles: He's an ally of an unpopular president and would be the nation's oldest first-term president. But Obama faces this: 40 percent of all white Americans hold at least a partly negative view toward blacks, and that includes many Democrats and independents.
More than a third of all white Democrats and independents—voters Obama can't win the White House without—agreed with at least one negative adjective about blacks, according to the survey, and they are significantly less likely to vote for Obama than those who don't have such views.

This should make white folks feel comfortable voting for McCain on race alone. After all 98% of Blacks are voting for Obama because he’s black.

If opposing huge tax increases, weak on defending the country and nationalization of healthcare and energy makes me a racist, then so be it.
When McCain’s ad blasted Obama for being friendly with Raines, the media cried racism. When the 527 ad come out blasting Obama for having ties to Rev. Wright and Bill Ayes, the press will be there crying racism.
And of course the obligatory, non-biased AP suggestion that the evil McCain is an “ally” of the evil Bush. The “if the Messiah loses it’s because whites are racist scum” meme will gather momentum throughout the rest of the election cycle. Everyone knows the “flyover crowd” is far too stupid to judge Obama on his merits.

The fact is that if white against black racism was as prevalent as some would have you believe, Obama wouldn’t stand a chance at getting elected president. In actuality there are certainly some whites, and some hispanics, and possibly some from other backgrounds who will not vote for Obama because of he is 50% black. However, there are also likely a significant number of whites who will vote for Obama specifically because he is 50% black.
I’m just wondering when our side will call them out on it and say “Where is the racism. Doesn’t it lie with the group that is supporting its candidate by 98%?” Of course we are the stupid party so I don’t expect anyone of prominence to say it.

I can think of many black men and women that would be very good Presidents. Off the top of my head,how about Joe Watkins or Michael Steele.

This is really simple and you should not over think the issue.
If you are not black and vote against Obama you are a racist.
Accept it and move on.

By the way, I have found nothing in the election laws that say I must vote for Obama because he is black.

We put a woman on the ticket and she is not a woman according to the Democrats. If the candidate were a Clarence Thomas or Michael Steele, then he wouldn’t be a real black... Yeah, well actually the facts show that it isn't a matter of "trying harder" but rather a matter of doing the right thing. Blacks in stable marriages, with at least highschool educations, without children out of wedlock, do just as well economically as Whites with comparable educations.
tell your sister that she shouldn’t promote a man to the presidency just because he is black, but because he has ideas, a history of taking his ideas and implementing them and accomplishing something BEFORE he ascends to the White House......otherwise it’s just affirmative action.....and community organizer or not, I haven’t seen much in the way of accomplishment.

You are exactly right. Bottom line-if you are white and won’t vote for a black Democrat/socialist/marxist/black liberation theology believer, you are a racist. Accept it, embrace it, and get on with your life. Otherwise, you will waste lots of valuable time attempting to explain, defend, etc. Just forget it, be a racist, and vote for the black conservative the next time one runs. And don’t forget to laugh at all the racist ‘rats you know who won’t vote for him/her.

Isn’t this just another way of describing the “bradley effect”? Many here assume it has skewed the poll results and will pull this election out in the end. How does this disagree with that conventional wisdom?
I guess that if I buy some Jackson/Sharpton “Black Offset Credits” it would be ok to vote Republican.
