WASHINGTON (AP) - Deep-seated racial misgivings could cost Barack Obama the White House if the election is close, according to an AP-Yahoo News poll that found one-third of white Democrats harbor negative views toward blacksmany calling them "lazy," "violent" or responsible for their own troubles.
The poll, conducted with Stanford University, suggests that the percentage of voters who may turn away from Obama because of his race could easily be larger than the final difference between the candidates in 2004about 2.5 percentage points.
Certainly, Republican John McCain has his own obstacles: He's an ally of an unpopular president and would be the nation's oldest first-term president. But Obama faces this: 40 percent of all white Americans hold at least a partly negative view toward blacks, and that includes many Democrats and independents.
More than a third of all white Democrats and independentsvoters Obama can't win the White House withoutagreed with at least one negative adjective about blacks, according to the survey, and they are significantly less likely to vote for Obama than those who don't have such views.

Is it just my foreign ear, or does Obama play around with accents when he’s with Afro-Americans, becoming down-home “folksy”?
-they have to be in a panic about the “white” democrate vote......the women are fleeing, can their men be far behind?
I guess I am a racist too, because there is nothing on this planet that will give me reason to vote for this clown. Nothing, including possible death.
I haven’t voted Dimocratic since Carter, fool me one, shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.
I have no bias against anyone for their race or ethnicity, I have extreme bias against any Dimocrat whether they are running for dog catcher or president.
You know you can’t point out any shortcoming of a black person bnecause that is racist. If you don’t like a black murderer it must be because he is black, not because he is a murderer.
But he should be elected BECAUSE he is black, is what the media seems to be saying. He doesn’t need to be qualified, just, what was it Biden said, clean cut and articulate?
To Obama supporter: “I’d vote for Palin if she were a black man. Would you vote for Obama if he were a WHITE man?”
I have serious misgivings about electing a president that hates me because of my color and thinks America should be damned. White liberals refuse to recognize racism by persons of color, so for them it’s a non-issue by definition; a deliberate blind spot.
You got that right. Like I’ve said before, I’m not prejudiced, I hate all democrats equally.
Yes, they carefully avoid mentioning that significantly fewer Republicans are racists.
The more it looks like Obama might not win, the more we will all hear about racism. But nowhere in those commentaries will be the polls that show 95% of black Americans voting for Obama and against McCain. Is that not the racism we should be discussing?
No. It’s not just your ear. His tendency to alter his speech patterns is well-known.
Obama is bi-lingual: He speaks English and Ebonics.
Maybe Hussein should have promoted his white half instead. If so, he would be losing because he is a radical, not because he is black. He has promoted his black half so he can blame the racists for his loss.
Not only that, but he is a friggin communist!
Remember that there is generally no affirmative action in the presidential election, so I can cast my vote for any reason or no reason but I am not required to vote for a specific candidate. And I don't (currently) have to tell anyone who and why I voted the way I did. I am not even required to tell the truth if I do choose to converse with some overbearing exit pollster. In fact I think that an answer such as " I voted for Palin because her ears are better looking than Obama's" should be used to skew the polls.(BTW the dude does have hideous ears!)
Clearly you are right. The only defense against such hypocrisy is to call them out on it, over, and over, and over, and over again. It was only because a light was shone upon Dan Rather and his sidekicks that the hit job on Bush was exposed for what it was. The hypocrisy of the left can only stand if it is left unchallenged.
It’s not just your foreign era, it’s the same way he tells blue-collar worker audience that he’s one of them, and then tells his home audience of socialist elites that small-town Americans are “bitter, clinging to God and guns”. He’s whatever he needs to be for the audience, because his core values—marxism and black liberation theology-wouldn’t wash with almost American audience (that he can speak to with media witnesses there).
No doubt and watch the inner cities blow up when The one grand mufti of chicago loses. Its going make LA 92 look like a barmitzva. Be prepared people..
I don’t think any racial misgivings would have been significant if Obamaand his Missus had not been such faithful folowers of Rev. Jeremiah Wright.. It’s as simple as that.
Conservatives wuopild never have voted for Obama; and it’s the liberals and independents who are now leary of voting for a man who appears to be a Chicago poitical thug.
Serious misgivings??!! I’m not about to vote for a man who sat under a preacher for twenty years who said that if God isn’t for black people, and against white people, then they need to murder God! That the only God they’ll accept is a God who would destroy whites! Not at gunpoint would I vote for such a man, “live free or die”.
if there is any justice the riots will be in Chicago, since they are the ones unloading this empty suit on America....
why should they feel “white guilt” over obama - he has not descended from a slave, in fact he grew up in affluent Hawaii and traveled the world.....oh, never mind, the dems are too stupid for reason.
BARRY BAMA IS A TERRORIST, A RACIST, A LIAR, A FINANGLER, A MONEY PIMP, AND A COMMUNIST....
there are plenty of reason why Barry should never be prez let alone a senator let alone dog catcher...and race ain't one of them...
I hope Deb Honeycutt wins in Georgia and I hope Micheal Steele runs again....there are super quality black people out there that don't need to be racist and communist.....they are just plain old good people....
You got me there.
I'm just a white republican, but does this mean I'm a racist too? I never knew I was a bigot, but I do consider almost all individuals responsible for their own troubles. So, to this author, I'm racist, a sexist, and otherwise prejudiced, as are all of us who think people can influence how their own lives turn out and thus that we are responsible for the things that don't go well.
A non-racist would vote for 0bama because he's black. I would have said that I'm voting against 0bama because he's far too liberal on domestic issues and too weak on foreign policy, that I'm letting issues take priority over race. Clearly, I'm in denial, and I'm not just voting against Obama for the same reasons I voted against Kerry and Gore. Race must be the hidden reason - the article tells us that much about typical white people like me. I'll just sit here clinging to guns and God in my bitterness, like most people in flyover country, not caring if I'm racist.
Nearly four in 10 white independents agreed that blacks would be better off if they "try harder."
Just how dumb are the other six out of ten? Almost everyone I know, including many of my best friends and family members would be better off if they tried harder. Does that apply to everyone except black people, and blacks need to just give up because they can't succeed? I am shocked that anyone would think it's racist to believe that a black person could do better but non-racist to say he can't improve his life. Stanford University has an interesting way of defining "racist".
