The Obama Campaign is giving out names, phone numbers, voter ID numbers, gender and age information to any yahoo who signs up at their web site. I got all the above information for 50 people in the 502 area code.
Here is a quote from that portion of Obama's web page.
In all states, you'll be able to immediately start calling potential supporters. Once you select a campaign on the right, you'll get a list of voters either in your state or in an important battleground state. You can pick up the phone and get calling immediately. Or if you'd prefer to call while you're away from your computer, you can print your list and come back to enter your results.

I've done phonebanking for candidates and I don't think I've ever been given voter ID#'s.

I wonder if this is why my husband is getting a lot of phone calls lately. He’s registered as an independent but he always votes Republican. I am registered as a Republican and no one asks for me—except obnoxious polling groups.

I would think age, voter ID, and gender would be illegal to pass along indiscrimately.
Fortunately, my caller ID works well. No 800 numbers, blocked numbers, or names I don't recognize. And I hang up gently but authoritatively.

“Shades of ACORN here.”
The problem with the ACORN community organizer tactic of getting in peoples’ faces is that it only works if you have power to impose some consequences on their failure to cooperate. The in-your-face tactic works well with politicians who must face the voters in future elections but I don’t see it working very well with individual voters who vote in private. In fact, I should think it would cause the individual voter to do the exact opposite of what the in-your-face harassing crowd wanted. (But let’s not tell Obama’s minions that, all right?)

It's all public information. I can get all that information legally one way or another from your state or your county.
One part that isn't readily available is the phone number, so the OBama campaign took the public info (your voter registration info) and paid to have your phone number appended, and then released it.
Nothing to see here; move along.

I can only speak for CA. A campaign can provide walk and phone lists for their campaign workers (paid or volunteer) to use to contact voters. It’s illegal to use the info for anything other than campaigning.
The voter ID number usually isn’t included in walk or phone lists. It’s not useful for anything other than sorting and filtering lists.
Even if legal, this isn’t a smart campaign tactic since the campaign has no control over message or timing.
BUT, it may enable voter fraud to be committed by people with no direct connection to the campaign.
To: mbraynard
The California voter files have a field for the phone number. It’s not mandatory and plenty of people leave it blank.

First time I have heard of info being put on line for anyone to get. Usually you need a password to get into the lists and even then the Voter ID# is usually blacked out by the campaigns because it is not something that is needed.
If they paid Aristotle, then phone numbers will show up on their lists, but with so many people with cell phones and no landlines the numbers are usually out of date.

I made a contribution this year to McCain right after the Obama Germany Heil Hitler speech. What frosts me is when small contributors like me get tons of calls for more money. I feel as though they have taken my contribution and turned it over to phone solicitors to harass me for more money, as if I’ve paid for my own torture.

Duh. Anybody can go to the County Election Board and get a list of registered voters, listed by party. That is what we do. There are names and addresses. You have to look up the phone numbers yourself. Our Township Republican Party has always done this as have all the candidates.

Has anybody thought to report this to the National election authorities?
Last go-round, there was a thread listing the contact information for all of the election commission authorities. Don't know where it could be, though.
We could start out with a thread telling folks to post contact email and phone numbers for their areas. Then, ask Jim Robinson to put a link to the main thread for reporting and contact info on the top of the page.
What do you think, Jim? You know our strength here. We could make a difference and put a swift end to their illegal voter fraud.

I’m almost postive it is not under Privacy laws, unless, 1) it is considered public information and/or 2) when someone registered, they checked a box and/or otherwise provided consent that their personal info be shared with others.
