Respecting the space Sarah Palin fills in public life
The Minneapolis/St. Paul Pioneer Press ^ | September 20, 2008

Pamela Brown came to see the equation-changer for herself. She is a musician, teacher, and JFK assassination buff from Eden Prairie who stood in the mob at Friday's John McCain-Sarah Palin rally at an airplane hangar in Blaine. Brown said she shifted from the Democratic side to 'undecided' when McCain, the Republican presidential candidate, named Palin, the Alaska governor, as his running mate.

"She changed the equation,'' said Brown, who said she voted Democratic in the last two presidential elections but also has "a brick with my name on it in the Reagan library." She sees Palin as a refreshing "voice of the people'' who has a record of reform. "This is what we need in Washington,'' she said.

The hangar was filled with Palin-loving women. Campaign buttons bore the image of the gun-totin' gov taking aim with a rifle. The caption read: "Read My Lipstick — Change is Coming." Palin herself did a brisk, 15-minute opening act for McCain in which she said the president of Iran wanted nuclear weapons "for a second holocaust.'' She introduced "First Dude" Todd Palin, sparked a reprise of "Drill, Baby Drill!" when she mentioned Alaska's oil reserves and referred to her infant son, Trig, who has Down syndrome, in calling for a nation "where every child is cherished.''

Little more than two weeks after her coming-out speech at the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Palin has given hope to Republican supporters that the equation has indeed shifted in their favor.

In that time, her record as governor of Alaska and as mayor of the Anchorage suburb of Wasilla has undergone microscopic media scrutiny. The "Washington elite" she challenged at the convention have obliged her by outdoing each other in pronouncing her unfit or worse. What is less understood is the Palin phenomenon — the space she fills in public life. Eunice Burns and Doreen Richter of Circle Pines, bedecked in McCain-Palin regalia, said it was Palin who brought them to Blaine on Friday. "She represents conservative women,'' said Richter. "We've never had someone to look up to.''

She added: "She's not a Gloria Steinem, Hillary Clinton liberal." Palin's opposition to abortion and her openness about her Christian faith are important to Richter. "I think she was destined,'' Richter said. "Ordained,'' chimed in Burns.

Tami Malloy, a mother of six from Minnetonka, brought her daughter, Amanda, and her mother, Myra Karlen. Malloy said she was "a little disinterested and bored'' before Palin joined the ticket. She appreciates Palin's abortion stand and also the fact that she has juggled family, college and career throughout her married life.

"That's awesome — the American dream for women,'' she said.

Karlen said she believes Palin is a "real person" with the kinds of concerns that non-famous, non-wealthy people struggle with. She said that makes it less likely she will "be swayed by dollars'' in Washington, and will stick to doing the people's business.

On a day when the economy was at risk of systemic failure, and when America remained at war in Iraq, Palin's supporters were not concerned by her thin resume and lack of national experience. "This year and in the future, the less experience you have, the purer you will be for the people,'' said Ursula Dimler of Chanhassen. Added Eunice Burns: "She's a mom with five kids. I think she's ready to multi-task.''

Mrs. 2ndDivisionVet, her mom and I were at a large craft show yesterday in a large local high school. Both ladies were wearing Palin t-shirts and got literally dozens of positive remarks about them from female shoppers and vendors and were asked where they could be found. Yes, this is Texas, but not all Texans are conservatives, no matter what you might read in the NYT.

America loves Sarah. The hate is coming from the far left fringe.

No politician has generated this much excitment since JFK. She has the same charisma. She is natural born leader. She was born for a time such as these.

McCain will be known as McBrilliant, while Palin is "The Natural"

0bama calls her a "skilled politician", but she is actually the anti-politician - a true public servant. She truly is in it to work for the American people, nothing more and nothing less.

Fine BUT - talk her up and keep the ticket in front of folks. Take no solice in any positive polls. The fight is on and there are lots of opportunities for BO dirty tricks - including at the polls.
Do Not Let Down Your Guard my friends.

Let’s hope there are armies of challengers at all blue state polling places. The fraud squad is alive and well and prepping for the One.

They’ll cheat at the polls and send liars for hire (lawyers) to swear the lie is the truth.

Did anyone catch the dig about a thin resume?

Anyway, of all the women interviewd in this article no one thought to ask them their faith.

I would want to know how many are Catholic since Minn. is a heavily Catholic. 08' IMHO is all about the rust-belt and surrounding states Catholic vote, many of whom are women.

"She's a mom with five kids. I think she's ready to multi-task.''

I was thinking last night after that cruddy comment made about Todd on SNL, that this is a young couple with a young family and obstacles are bound to happen. It's what makes families and individuals stronger and wiser.

I don't care if your left, right or green with purple polka-dots, if you claim you and your family have never hit bumps in the road then you are liar plain and simple.

Deserves repeating: “0bama calls her a “skilled politician”, but she is actually the anti-politician - a true public servant. She truly is in it to work for the American people, nothing more and nothing less.”

Call me extreme at its worst but I see this election as a fight between:

Good and Evil

There are few moralities on one side to be bothered with. I won’t waste space.

On the other side a damaged war veteran who continues his work for the country, and a mother who has plenty on her plate without the VP job as well as having her family insulted and her personal life rearranged by a monstrous media and demonic democrats to get numbers in votes.
