NEW SUNSPOT

Magnetogram

A new sunspot is emerging in the sun's northern hemisphere. After several months of almost-relentlessly blank suns, "this is like a breath of fresh plasma," says photographer Pete Lawrence who sends this picture from Selsey, UK. The magnetic polarity of the emerging spot identifies it as a member of new Sunspot Cycle 24.

There have been several protospots but this one looks like it will be named. It would be nice if this is finally the beginning of the new cycle emerging.

I really hope this is the sunspot cycle kicking in. I don’t want to disprove the global warming weenies at the expense of famine and misery from a long stretch of cold climate.

Like like to see them suffer for as long as possible without the rest of us really taking in the chin on with lower temperatures.

Nice? I was looking forward to the lack of sunspots and debunking the global warming folks.

I would like to have enough cooling to lay the warming scam to rest, but I’m not going to argue with nature.

There were spots during the Maunder Minimum ~ just not very many of them.

This one spot does little to allay the anxiety the absence of spots has raised among those who rationally fear the coming of the next period of Maximum Glaciation.

Nah, we haven’t even turned on the heat yet, though I did close the windows. I have laid in a good supply of fresh snow tires though (capable of taking studs, should it come to that).

Darn it, if this is a new sunspot cycle then I cut down too many oaks this season. At least the almanac is still on my side.

“I don’t want to disprove the global warming weenies at the expense of famine and misery from a long stretch of cold climate.”

People don’t learn if they don’t suffer from their idiocies. We need the mini ice age, and we need it to be severe enough to make people want to stone the GW fools. We also need for this financial crisis to come to a head now, rather than later, for the ensuing enlightening (hopefully involving a lot of tar and feathers).

People don’t learn unless they are held accountable. It’s just the nature of the species.

We are still going to be cold this winter. South Africa has had some historic snow the past week or two. If the sun spot numbers ramp up quickly (doubtful), we will still be as cold this winter as last, but less snow then last year. If the sunspot numbers stay low, we will have more cold this winter then last and just as much snow as last year. The solar wind affect on cloud formation is in real time. The heating effect from a more energetic sun takes time to warm the Earth. Just look at summer here in the states when the warmest months occur after the solar irradiance peak. Not before.

Agreed. Still to early to say everything is back to normal. And there are still questions about the solar wind and why the sun's "conveyor belt" seems to have slowed down.

The Solar Flux has been bottomed out for quite a while but appears to be rising slightly. We certainly are in the active phase now, but the main question is just how active it will get.
