A new sunspot is emerging in the sun's northern hemisphere. After several months of almost-relentlessly blank suns, "this is like a breath of fresh plasma," says photographer Pete Lawrence who sends this picture from Selsey, UK. The magnetic polarity of the emerging spot identifies it as a member of new Sunspot Cycle 24.

There have been several protospots but this one looks like it will be named. It would be nice if this is finally the beginning of the new cycle emerging.

There were spots during the Maunder Minimum ~ just not very many of them.

This one spot does little to allay the anxiety the absence of spots has raised among those who rationally fear the coming of the next period of Maximum Glaciation.

Nah, we haven’t even turned on the heat yet, though I did close the windows. I have laid in a good supply of fresh snow tires though (capable of taking studs, should it come to that).
