Democrat Takes 52-43 Lead Among Likely Voters, Erases Republican's Post-Palin Pick Gains

Barack Obama has seized the reins of economic discontent, vaulting over John McCain's convention gains by persuading voters he both better understands their economic troubles and can better address them.

In a head-to-head-match-up he's now supported by 52 percent of likely voters vs. McCain's 43 percent, the first significant advantage for either candidate among likely voters in ABC/Post polls.

Add third-party candidates Ralph Nader and Bob Barr and it's essentially the same, 51-43 percent.

The contest has shifted from a 49-47 percent McCain-Obama race immediately after the Republican convention.

McCain's bounce -- on individual issues and attributes as well as in overall preference -- is gone.

The sampling is instructive and probably the nature of the questions asked. A breakout by one candidate this early is surprising.

hey if most Americans think Obama is good for the economy by giving speeches and raising taxes then well...let them learn the hard way.
The smart ones will figure out how to save their money.

I guess we can rationalize this all we want but 9 point lead for Owabi is quite large and something we need to take seriously. Just saying. I dont like this one bit. I know its hogwash but does Joe down the street, NO.

The race narrowed today in Rasmussen, Gallup and I think Hotline tracking polls. McCain is also ahead by two in the Battleground tracking poll. This is a poll of adults and it’s an ABC news poll too. I think that’s all that needs to be said.

Exactly.

They are undersampling Republicans.

And oversampling Independents.

It’s been noticed by some on here that alot of those so called “Independents” that answer these polls really are Democrats that don’t want to tell the pollster who they really are.

But it will not stop all the Morning Shows to lead this as their morning feeding of propaganda to the Sheeple.

And only 28% Rep? Hmmm, looks like WP is trying to pad the hit Obama's going to take in the debates.

We'll see if the rest of the MSM follows suit. Bear in mind this kind of poll is designed to shape opinion. We know nothing about actual voter preferences and Kellyanne Conway predicts the opposite in November.

11 point bounce in 2 weeks? I somehow doubt the electorate is this fickle.

Yes, the economic meltdown has dominated the news. But what exactly has Obama done so great to demonstrate his superior economic skills during this crisis? Nothing, NADA.

I have followed elections very closely since 1980. And polling since 2000. I have never seen polls bounce around like they are this year.

If their goal is to depress folks, it may work.

Partisanship has not significantly changed. Among registered voters 38 percent in this poll identify themselves as Democrats, 28 percent as Republicans and 29 percent as independents. That’s very similar to what it was in the last ABC/Post poll – 36-28-32 percent – the previous one, and indeed the average all year, 38-28-30 percent.

So there is a higher percentage of RATS in this poll than the last one, by two percentage points. And I dont believe that the spread is 10 pct points between the parties. Raz uses 5.5 pct points for likely voters (33.5% GOP, 39% RAT, rest indie).

Ok, here’s the deal: 163 “oversampling” of black adults, leaves 919 adults, split at 38% democrat. I am surprised it was not 80% Obama....

And now this outlier poll will scew the RCP national averages, but I’m sure that was their intention. Watch the MSM go nuts with this tomorrow.

Not really. We should take it for what it is. Rasmussen and Gallup, the more reliable polls, tell a different story. Battleground has McCain up 2. We'll see what tomorrow's Rasmussen poll says.

That's exactly their goal. To depress Republican turnout in November and encourage people to accept an Obama victory as inevitable. ABC/WashPost are in the tank for Obama. I agree - an 11 point turnaround for Obama is very fishy. But if it succeeds in panicking the GOP and the base, it will have achieved its purpose. Whether its an accurate portrayal or not of voter sentiment is beside the point. The MSM will stop at nothing to get Obama elected President - even if they have to lie to do it.
