"I don't believe that the Times is pulling for Barack Obama." Jack Shafer, Slate, 9-23-08
There's actually much to agree with in Jack Shafer's column today regarding McCain senior adviser Steve Schmidt's criticism of the New York Times. For example, I'd note this observation by him:
"The press corps does adore Barack Obama. They like his story. They like writing about him. They like the way he gives speeches. They like the way he makes them feel. And they don't mind cutting him slack whenever he acts like a regular politicianwhich he is."
But Shafer, Slate's resident media critic, also expresses the to-me mind-boggling belief cited at the top of this item, that the Times isn't pulling for Obama. So stunned was I by Shafer's claim that I wrote him, seeking clarification. He was nice enough to reply, and I'm setting forth our exchange here:

NY Times doesn’t pull for Obama ping to Today show list.
Any lie repeated often enough is believed, and the bigger the whopper the more easily bought into.
The old gray bag lady, aka the NYT, is not only in the tank for the messiah, they are prepared to financially ruin their company in the process to do so.
and the entire economy
The NYT doesn’t pull for Obama, Santa Clause and the Easter Bunny are real and I’m married to Morgan Fairchild whom I have seen naked..yeah that’s the ticket. (sarcasm)
This asshat might even believe the drivel exuding from his pie hole. It’s a fact that most Leftists in the LameStream Medjia think they are “unbiased”.
0bama will bail them out.
This site provides details on the Forty so-called probing stories run on Obama by the NYT and reveals that 90% of them were pure puff pieces. Bear in mind that the list of so-called probing stories was released by the Obama campaign in response to McCain’s criticism that the NYT was biased in favor of Obama. http://www.cheatseekingmissiles.com/2008/09/22/obamas-bizarre-list-of-40-probing-ny-times-stories/
Yea, and the sun doesn't rise in the east, and waves don't break on the beach, and the rabbit dying doesn't mean you're pregnant, and the Bill Clinton doesn't break his wedding vows, and Barney Frank isn't gay, and ....
Really, he seems too happy for me these days.
Obama needs to see a chiropractor to get his head on straight. It sits at a terrible angle to his body.
...You gotta be kiddin....
“They like the way he gives speeches.”
“They like his background story”
“They like the way he makes them feel.”
Nothing about how much they “like” his plan for the nation, his past accomplishments, and what he will do as President. But they are sure to denegrate Sarah Palin. Wonder if they did as much to the Silky Pony, who had even less experience when Kerry tapped him for the No. 2 slot. My guess would be no.
All fizz. No gin.
I actually agree. The NYT isn’t pulling for Obama. Pulling implies passively cheering him on.
The NYT isn’t out front pulling for him. They are behind him 110% and PUSHING him.
You all may doubt the NYT’s commitment to America, but Osama and other terrorists do not. Remember they were the first to tip Osama off to stop using those pesky cell phones. And the simple fact that they admittedly literally drip with adoration over Obama should never be taken to mean they hate that old, crippled, mean man McCain and that book bashing(even before they are written), hyper religious, bad mother, God and country loving(anathemas to liberals), inexperienced mayor/governor, joke Palin. Would the terrorists’ best friend the NYT lie? Or would middle America who believes that NYT is biased. Now who would you believe? /sarc
