DALLAS -- Dallas police are looking into a shocking crime against an Iraq War vet that took place on a college campus.
Overnight Tuesday, someone took vandalized 23-year-old Army veteran Viktor Whitlow's vehicle while it was parked at Dallas Baptist University. Ironically, the mascot at DBU is the Patriot.
The vandals used a box cutter to destroy the inside of his jeep, they slashed five tires and smashed through the windshield. Perhaps the most shocking detail to the vandalism was the message spray painted on his hood.
In red paint the vandals spraypainted the message, "Soldiers are murderers."....
Dallas police said Whitlow's case is not considered a hate crime because military personnel cannot be members of a hate crime.

You’ve got to be a member of of one of the “protected classes” before the law on hate crimes applies. Being a white male Christian citizen soldier veteran just doesn’t press any of the approrpiate victim buttons to invoke the law...so it is just a $10,000 crime against property.

If the perps committed the outrage because you were a member of the above protected classes, then it would be a hate crime. If, on the the other hand, the low-lifes committed the crime because you were a soldier, then it's not a hate crime.
How do we know their motivation? We have to take their word for it!

Texas' bias motive statute (Tex. Code of Crim. Pro 42.014) protects specified "classes" - race, color, disability, religion, national origin or ancestry, age, gender, or sexual preference. If the jury finds a hate motivation, there is a sentencing enhancement.
If I vandalize your car because I don't like the Navy, that doesn't fit under the hate motivation statute.
Or it may be inferred from surrounding circumstances. For example, I start attacking you and call you a racial slur in the act, that's a pretty decent indicator of my motivation.

I really wish servicemembers didn't have to put those DoD stickers on our windshields. It makes our vehicles easy targets for people who hate the military. They aren't really necessary. A military ID alone should be sufficient to get on base.

I don't mean to suggest that all those over age 65 act like victims, but I believe age can also be a protected class.
