Pollster says election could end in landslide
http://news.google.com ^ | Friday, 26 September 2008 | by Mariah Ralston

Posted on 09/26/2008 5:06:26 PM PDT by Maelstorm

One of the country's top pollsters was in Rochester on Thursday and suggested that the November presidential election will end in an electoral landslide, even though the candidates are running close.

"Essentially the election is at equilibrium," said John Zogby, president of Zogby International. "This election will stay close until the end."

Zogby said he thinks the race will turn in the last weekend before Election Day and though the popular vote will be tight, the successful candidate will win in a landslide. He likened this year's election to the contest in 1980, when Ronald Reagan defeated President Jimmy Carter.

"This may be and probably is the most important election in our lifetime," Zogby said. "I don't say that lightly."

Despite two books by Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama, Americans still don't know enough about him. And if they don't think they know him well enough by the time they vote, they'll go with the "comfortable old shoe," Republican Sen. John McCain, Zogby said.

If Obama can convince voters, he'll increase turnout among young people and minorities, Zogby said.

Zogby later added that if the winner doesn't kick off his presidency with a period of reform, he will risk alienating a generation of voters.

I agree that this election will not be a squeaker. The number of undecideds will fall one way or another. Pray for the old shoe folks and get your butts out and canvas this weekend and put a sign in your yard and a bumper sticker on your bumper. Join the team. Get in Obama's face.

I'll agree with that. Too many battleground states are too close and I think it could easily swing one way or the other after the debates.

I'll be happy if PA slips into the McCain column while holding VA and CO. Most of the rest will fall in line.

Now if Baroness de Rothschild keeps circulating in the right social circles ... okay, NY aint going McCain, but it'd be a nice dream.

The media is in overdrive of pro-obama stories, covering up every crooked democrat in congress in this bailout mess, and pushing hard on the anti-mccain and palin stories around the clock.

Full court press. McCain better bring his A-Game tonight and Palin better have everything at the ready come Oct.2nd.

Virginia in Rasmussen doesn’t look good. The GOP made a crucial mistake in NM and VA not doing more for our candidates. We need a better battle plan. Mark Warner a stealth liberal has been running around getting kudos for running up state spending and raising taxes while lying about Jim Gilmore’s record who cut taxes 1.5 billion in the state. The CATO institute gave Warner a D and the press in this state have been buying it hook line and sinker.

The polls have been very, very liquid this time around. Obama up, McCain up, tie, Obama up substantially, McCain up substantially, back to a tie, back to Obama up a little, back to McCain up a little, a tie, and so forth. The reason is that this is a very strong Democrat year...but Obama is not a good candidate people are comfortable with. Had they nominated a mediocre governor with a good old boy demeanor, like Bill Richardson, they would be running away with this consistently up to election day. The only chance Obama has with this election is the fact it is a Democrat year with an unpopular GOP president at the helm - he’s simply not a great candidate people have confidence could serve as President, which is what is making this race even.

I would too. What McCain needs to do and all the 527s and Pro-Life, NRA, and Business groups need to do is hammer Obama on the following fronts:

Pro-Abortion
Anti-Gun
Associations with Ayers/Wright/Rezko etc
His rating from the ACLU
His plan to spend trillions of dollars beyond the bailout plan
Taxes Taxes Taxes!

Hit him on all the left issues.
Cast him as out of the mainstream
Cast him as bought and paid for by special interests.
People still aren’t sure about him and that has benefited him because they don’t know what he is about.

Define him the last few weeks of the campaign and he won’t have a chance.

I don’t trust Zogby on anything.
1) He made it clear in 2004 he is for Democrats.
2) Keeping this in turmoil is his bread and butter to get attention for his polls.
3) He is the founder of some Arab America group and obviously would slant to Obama.

What's making the race polls even is the weighting of the polls. One poll a week or so ago polled 800 people. Something like 39% democrat and 32% Republican Blah, blah, blah...BUT of the 800 polled, 163 (20+%) were black...Which way do you think that poll went?

I just can’t see Obama winning in a landslide. McCain is going to do very well in the arc of states from Virginia, down to Florida, across to Texas, and up to the Dakotas and Idaho. He’s got about 200 electoral votes in his pocket, and he’s solid in most of these states. He’s not going to lose too many of these states if there are gaffes, scandals, or bad economic news right before the election. Having said that, of course Obama can win. But I just can’t imagine a landslide for Barack.

I'm not sure what Zogby’s motivation is for making this claim, but it's very, very unlikely that there will be a landslide EV victory. I think Zogby must know this. As it stands now, Obama will win by a fairly narrow margin (5 - 10 EV), assuming that McCain holds Ohio and Virginia.

For McCain to win, he'll need NM or CO.

As far as being beaten badly enough, we’ll see. Any defeat may do. Democrats don’t seem to let their losing general election candidates come back again. Even close losers such as Gore and Kerry never tried again. Part of that may be that there’s always a hunger for new faces in politics, and both Gore and Kerry found that there wasn’t too much enthusiasm for them to try again.

“What’s making the race polls even is the weighting of the polls.”

Something else weighting the polls is all those Democrat voters who are embarrassed to admit to the pollsters that there is no way they will vote for a black person.

I've got this to say to you, Zogby. I am a swing voter, one known as a "Reagan Democrat".

I am not voting for Obama and I will tell you why. He is just not qualified. I am sick of the press tooting their horns for him, trying to shotgun him into the White House.

Furthermore this "Truth Squad" business in Missouri is the last straw for me. By that, Obama has proven he has a paper-thin skin and obviously thinks nothing of violating the rights of others who disagree with him, under color of law. Clearly, that is abuse of power right there.

If he ever becomes President, the press will be "targeted" first for all the "lies" said about him. Is he thinking of suing or incarcerating the whole world if they don't kiss his butt? His fawning press and pollsters like yourself need to be made aware that you will be the first to go.

I will be voting for McCain/Palin in this election, with no apologies. If you value your freedom, you should too.
