How disappointed was Chris Matthews with Barack Obama's debate performance tonight? How angry was Matthews at Obama for agreeing so much with John McCain? Enough that Matthews unleashed the ultimate Dem insult, saying Obama reminded him of Richard Nixon.
Matthews first vented his frustration at Obama adviser Linda Douglass.
CHRIS MATTHEWS: Linda, my friend, why did your candidate agree so much, openly and relentlessly, with his opponent tonight?
Douglas's answer was to the effect that this is how a bi-partisan Obama would operate as president. After criticizing Obama for mishandling the economic issues in the debate, Matthews turned to Andrea Mitchell, and levelled that supreme Dem slap.

Thanks because Obama is smarter than Mathews - but that dosen’t say much, does it?
Obama wants to get intot he White House desparately. He KNOWS McCain is viewed as better on foreign plicy than he is. So he agreed with McCain on most issues except Iraq, to pre-empt him in the eyes of independents on that subject.
But an @$$ like Mathews wouldn’t know that.
what? no tingle? aw..
“By the way, I dont think Nixon was known for being bi-partisan and humble (if thats what Matthews criticizes Obmama for).”
Before my time, but I think Nixon was criticized in that first debate with Kennedy for letting set the tone (well, in addition to the five o’clock shadow problem).
Matthews thinks Obama was too passive and deferential.
I agree. But then I thought McCain, who’s been portrayed by the MSM as an idiot relative to Obama, showed that he’s forgotten more about foreign and defense policy than Obama knows.
Where have you been? The McCain campaign had such an ad out about 10 minutes after the debate was over. It is on you tube now but I don't have the link, perhaps someone else does. It has Bozo saying "I agree with McCain" over and over. Great ad.
That ad is already out.
It went up about an hour ago.
I am sorry but I cannot take Chris seriously on Political Commentary.
I remember Rush interviewing Chrissy one day, at the height of the "Scandal in the Oral Office". Chrissy really ripped into Clinton, and went into all the reasons Slick had sullied the office of the President. Oh, well, I guess he got over it...
The McCain campaign had precisely such an ad up even before the debate ended!
Oh nasty!!! But you are right!
Exactly, he used to be really spot on, now he is just sort of a Obamaton and unwatchable.
“so Andrea, did Obama win huge, win big, or win by enough”
There was a really good article in a recent AmSpec to the effect that Nixon’s real boo-boo in the famous televised debate with JFK had nothing to do with his five o’ clock shadow and everything to do with the fact that he pretty much agreed with everything JFK said. Then again, so would most of us back then.
The next time round he did not repeat the mistake (then again, the sixties were on, the dems had radicalized and the game had changed) he came on as the law-and-order candidate and wiped the floor with Eugene McCarthy.
The author also mentioned Wendell Willkie in 1940 (businessman-turned-politician he was really out of his depth) he too, failed to differentiate his platform from FDR’s and paid the penalty, ditto for Thomas E. Dewey vs. Harry Truman who also piddled away his own advantages by politely playing dem lite.
It’s only been 12 years but I can’t even remember what the hell hapless Bob Dole was FOR let alone AGAINST (beyond being a war hero and a dear sweet old guy, etc.).
Yeah I felt that way when he “agreed” with McCain on Russia. He’s fought EVERYTHING McCain stands for on Foreign Policy but when it comes to Russia he “agrees”. He was too busy on the campaign trail to pay much attention to that situation.
It’s also funny watching him say he wants a troop increase in Afghanistan when he was against the one in Iraq saying that it wouldn’t work.
No suprise, both candidates are pathetic liberals. They make GWB look like George Washington.
more like schpincter tingle, as in butt puckering knowing his favorite thrill maker got pushed around tonight.
Uh Nixon ran against Hubert Humphrey and the election of 68 was no wiping the floor. With George wallace in the race the election was about 45 not 50 states. The results went into the night, not quite as long as 60 but long enough to make it interesting. Nixon won the popular vote by .7%.
