We are a nation built on immigrants. We became great because of the people who came here and worked and eventually became citizens.
Not everyone wishes to stay, but as I read and hear more and more about the immigration issue and the distrust and anger that increasing numbers of Americans have against those who come here for work and whose work we need as well, I am increasingly fearful not of these people, but for our country. We are working hard to create a country to which nobody will want to come, and we won't have much reason to stay.
Since Sept. 11, 2001, we have become a nation whose every step is so guided by our fears that we are becoming isolated and hated the world over. We need to find a way to be welcoming to strangers once again while still guarding our security. We need to invite and respect visitors and foreign students, who then will return to their countries with a wonderful American education and experience and be ambassadors for us.
If we treat foreigners with disdain, they will stop coming and will no longer see America as the land of opportunity. Soon, we will make this the new vision of America.
There are thousands of immigrants who have come to work and better themselves and their families. We need them, as well. Many are working without documentation because the laws limit immigration to levels that, if we could actually enforce them, would strangle our economy. While we seek to promote economic growth, our immigration policies restrict growth and create black markets for necessary labor.
We must provide the legal means for immigrants to come and work. By denying immigrant workers legal status, we place them at the mercy of unscrupulous employers, while legitimate employers are unable to hire the workers needed for their businesses.
Our laws must recognize the dignity and humanity of individuals. We can and must require that they obey our laws, but we must also pass laws that can be adhered to. We can no more set unreasonable limits on our economic growth by prohibiting immigration than we can set a speed limit on freeways of 15 mph. We destroy our own security when we send individuals away in chains, separating them from their families, letting them die or simply live in constant fear.
Yes, immigrants should (and do) pay the same taxes that citizens do, but we cannot continue our racism and hatred against foreigners, or it will turn on us very soon.

No one wanted to fight a Schottenstein except us - his victims. Will nobody help? Will nobody stand up? A week after teachers from Columbus School for Girls had written letters of praise on my behalf about my achievements, my father had me locked up, first in Cross Creek Manor in Utah. There I was surrounded by suicidal teens, drug addicts, alcoholics, and prostitutes. The staff berated me, I had no contact with anyone, I was isolated from society; it was as though I didn’t exist. Later my father had me moved to the Menninger Clinic, a psychiatric hospital in Kansas. They attempted to brainwash me, took every ounce of freedom I was ever granted, and forced me to live with a coke addict. My mail was monitored and so was every phone call with my mother, and my two younger sisters.

When those immigrants came here in the 1800's, America was completely different than now. It was wide open, our population was low, and we NEEDED them to settle and build up basically everything West of the Mississippi.

FYI - the MI Homes family is not the same family as the retail store owners. I think they are 2nd or 3rd cousins. Myron (The M) and Irving (the I) came from nearby Dayton I believe. They however are both very wealthy families. The author of this letter to the editor was a schoolmate of my ex wife. I met her a couple of times years ago. I think great wealth gives these people too much time to think about how guilty they (and by projection all of us) should feel.

I work in I.T. so I know lots of people on H1-Bs or green cards.
One of the most vehement anti-illegal people I know is a Muslim here on a green card. After 9/11 his green card app took five years to process, and it pissed him off that waves of illegals were invading the country and demanding their “rights” while he, doing things the right and legal way, was living in constant fear that his green card would not be issued and that he’d have to leave the country he loved. His GC was finally issued and he is now applying for US citizenship and his app has been stuck in namecheck hell for a year. I feel bad for the guy; he loves this country and hates his home country. He wants to become an American citizen so he can participate fully in our wonderful democracy. He thinks illegals demanding a path to citizenship are nothing more than common criminals. I agree.
Any amnesty is a slap in the face to the immigrants who have followed the rules and done all that is asked of them. It’s a slap in the face to the educated professionals having to meet the high educational standards of the H1-B visa, who have subjected themselves to the extensive background and medical checks required by the transition to the immigrant GC, and who have obeyed all laws. We do not need another amnesty. We have no need of people in this country who do not speak English and who are poorly educated or illiterate. We already have enough illiterate and uneducated Americans. Uneducated illegals are not going to help this country stay in the lead in terms of scientific research or economic might. No, no, no.
This issue makes me so MAD. Ugh. It’s disgusting. And don’t even get me started on chain immigration; we should get rid of that.
