Senator John McCain was on a roll. In a room reserved for high-stakes gamblers at the Foxwoods Resort Casino in Connecticut, he tossed $100 chips around a hot craps table. When the marathon session ended around 2:30 a.m., the Arizona senator and his entourage emerged with thousands of dollars in winnings.
A lifelong gambler, Mr. McCain takes risks, both on and off the craps table. He was throwing dice that night not long after his failed 2000 presidential bid, in which he was skewered by the Republican Partys evangelical base, opponents of gambling. Mr. McCain was betting at a casino he oversaw as a member of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee, and he was doing so with the lobbyist who represents that casino, according to three associates of Mr. McCain.
The visit had been arranged by the lobbyist, Scott Reed, who works for the Mashantucket Pequot, a tribe that has contributed heavily to Mr. McCains campaigns and built Foxwoods into the worlds second-largest casino. Joining them was Rick Davis, Mr. McCains current campaign manager. Their night of good fortune epitomized not just Mr. McCains affection for gambling, but also the close relationship he has built with the gambling industry and its lobbyists during his 25-year career in Congress.
As a two-time chairman of the Indian Affairs Committee, Mr. McCain has done more than any other member of Congress to shape the laws governing Americas casinos, helping to

This is getting ridiculous. They have no shame.
Hey Jo, your boy has many ties to slumlord, Tony Resko and terrorist, Bill Ayers. So what’s your point meathead?
I’m not even a McCain fan, but this is getting pathetic. They need to declare this as in-kind donations to Obama
Perhaps they’ll look into Harry Reid.
Aww...who am I kidding?
Oh, here we go again. The liberal hacks of the MSM just keep pouring on......they are just gutter slime.
Wow, they wasted a lot of space explaning that McCain is a politician and has the power to decide things.
I guess you’re not Mr Maverick when it comes to wearing a tie, Senator. You wear ties just like all the other Senators.
2009 A.D. The media lied, America died.
This is an outrageous implication. As a Nevadan (non-native), I am fairly well versed in the ways of gaming. To imply that McCain (or anyone, for that matter) could be bribed through a good night at the tables is not only libelous, but utterly ridiculous.
And where is the story about Obama’s ties to the Muslim/Islamic world? His attempt to pass off fake birth credentials to try and qualify to be president? His ties to Rezko (ORGANIZED CRIME)? His ties to seditious and treasonous people like Wright? His ties to unrepentant TERRORISTS?
Hey MSM...where are THOSE stories?
Oh so I should vote for a black liberation , terrorist commie muslim baby killer and who knows what else because of this story ???
Which 527’s are doing the the truth ads on 0bama ?? AIP ??? Money coming their way ...
Hmm....NYT throwing a hissy fit because the McCain campaignted called them to the carpet earlier this week?
Will this actually help McCain in Nevada?
I don’t trust anyone who does not play craps!
It’s amazing how much credibility the NYT and the rest of the MSM have lost. Some day they might report a true news story, yet no one will pay attention because they have cried wolf by reporting so much BS in the past.
Hamas?
Rezko?
Is anyone at the NY Times even pretending to be objective any more?
Doesn’t surprise me one bit. Back in 2004, the NYT went wall-t0-wall hit pieces with Bush for the last 30 days. Be prepared Freepers, for more NYT Dem-biased propaganda pieces in the future...this is just a taste of things to come before Nov 4.
Rule #1
Do no harm.
I wonder how long the New York Times sat on this story to release it close to the election? And now many more “scandals” like this are they sitting on?
“McCain is an impulsive risk-taker, a dangerous gambler.”
Won’t this dampen the old man message? Or are liberals that compartmentalized?
Hey Pinch, why don’t you look into Dingy Harry while you are at. Moron.
so what.
lol.
They complain about the gambling industry when the opposition is Obama?
Just another Obama campaign press release.
“And now many more scandals like this are they sitting on?”
There’s one more. McCain did coke as a kid. No, wait, he shirked national guard duty. No, no, I’ve got it, he had sex with an alien and punched a hole in the ozone.
Oh my goodness! He was throwing dice eight years ago! That is terrible. I bet he even has pulled tags off of mattresses !
Hit piece #Infinity.
Let’s see, McCain plays dice, sometimes wins, and regulates the tribes.
Compare that to every fat cat dem who has his hand in the Fannie/Freddie cookie jar (and of course ACORN), which will now cost us 700 billion dollars.
Nope, and they are lying about several things concerning Obama, Jonah Goldberg nails them:

“According to Politico, Obama spokesman Bill Burton called Schmidts attack on the Times laughable. Burton released a list of 42 probing stories from the Times. Among these allegedly hard-hitting exposés were the following headlines: In Law School, Obama Found Political Voice, Charisma and a Search for Self in Obamas Hawaii Childhood and In Illinois, Obama Proved Pragmatic and Shrewd.”
Yep, hardhitting stuff that.
I love it when the NYT stock chart is posted, and the decline is nearly vertical, anyone who owns NYT shares is a fool, and everyone knows the saying about a fool and their money...
To imply that McCain (or anyone, for that matter) could be bribed through a good night at the tables is not only libelous, but utterly ridiculous. Not to mention the honesty and integrity of not just that casino but ALL casinos.
To suggest a casino has some control over table games is pure ignorance.
And, how would any casual observer know that an entire "entourage" was winners?
As a poker player and a (non-native) Nevadan, I would love to see that. Besides, *real* high rollers don't throw hundred-dollar chips around, they throw $5000 chips around!
NY Times: “John McCain Once Golfed at a Golf Course That Does Not Admit Women as Members”
(of course it was in the 1960s before he lost full use of his arms due to enemy torture, but WTH, it’s still a useful attack point)
/sarcasm
I’m waiting for them to bring back that son of a KGB agent who claims McCain was never in solitary in Hanoi, and that his dad put McCain up in a luxury apartment with hookers during that time.
Did the hookers break his arms, or has he been faking for forty years?
Just sent a pleasant little email to Mr Becker
care to join me ?

No way McCain will lose Nevada.
Obama may have the casino unions in his pocket, but that isn’t enough to win.
This should help with the American Indian vote... I would think, since he’s helped them get their very lucritive casinos (or so this implies).

Harry Reid is the lapdog for the casinos.
That was my first thought, betting $100 a roll in Nevada (where it’s legal) isn’t any great shakes. I’ve done it many times, will do it again, and I’m not a “high-roller” LOL.
here's a thought... how about an effort to do the same to the MSM? get a list of names for the editors, anchors, writers, etc... for all forms of the MSM... then start building a list of embarrassing stories and/or stories showing how they are taking brides, giving favors, or any other unethical/illegal practices?
also, detailing out the network the libs have that pushes a story, untouched, from coast to coast... thereby documenting their political smear machine
now THAT would be a good use for the internet
Do they wear bracelets too? ;)
The base doesnt like it. It doesnt look good. And good things dont happen in casinos at midnight.WOOO the conveniently "wishes to remain anonymous official" is an expert on casinos at the witching hour. And everybody knows a maverick worrys about "the base".
I love Nevada and the funnest time is after midnight...MORON
Didn't know the NYT was against gambling. Oh, what am I saying? They are only against Republicans, especially those pesky right wing evangelical, uneducated, Christiam Republicans.
Sorry, NYT, we ain't buying. Move on, now; nothing to see here.
vaudine
Obama and Team have ties to the Chicago Underworld, Terrorists, and partial birth abortion enthusiasts..
I agree.
McCain plays craps? Awesome! :)
Rather have a craps player than a poker player.
