Shortly before John McCain suspended his campaign to help with the Wall Street bailout, his generals declared war on The New York Times.
In a conference call this week, McCain senior aide Steven Schmidt bellowed: Whatever The New York Times once was, it is today not by any standard a journalistic organization. It is a pro-Obama advocacy organization that every day impugns the McCain campaign, attacks Sen. McCain, attacks Gov. (Sarah) Palin. ... Everything that is read in The New York Times that attacks this campaign should be evaluated by the American people from that perspective.
Strong stuff. And, to be fair, not exactly accurate. Biased or not, The New York Times is, of course, a journalistic organization. There are many rooms in the mansion of journalism, and being fair or even-handed is not what makes journalism journalistic. In Europe, virtually all of the major papers are more ideologically biased than the Times, and I say that as someone whose father taught me to distrust the Times the way some Irishmen once taught their kids to distrust the English.
But to admit that Schmidt exaggerates his case is not to say that the truth isnt on his side. You cant exaggerate a lie.
One good test of how the Times has been covering the race is to see who is defending it. Liberal pro-Obama columnist E.J. Dionne protested the McCain attack as an attempt to intimidate reporters and discredit those who try to give an honest account of the campaign.

Ya know, I get kinda tired of these articles by alleged conservative ‘journalists’ who have finally discovered that the Drive-By Media and the Democrats/Liberals are one and the same. We’ve known this here at FR from day one. Anyone with half a brain knew it.
But no, our conservative commentators who work inside the beltway were too chickensh!t to confront their drinking buddies at the WaPo and Time and whoever else.
I’m almost as tired of listening to the ‘conservative’ beltway insiders as I am the Drive-Bys.
Thought this was the start of a Halloween thread and someone was going to put a picture of Helen Thomas in a chearleading outfit up.
The answer should be obvious: The New York Times doesnt owe fairness to McCain; it owes accuracy to its readers. Fairness to McCain would simply be a happy byproduct of that accuracy.
NYT “slimes” speak in soft voices and lisp.
NY Pravda - just when I thought all those old Commies were about to die out..............
Oh, perfect! Just the model I want the US journalism camp to follow. Oh well, it's only a matter of time before enough holes in their foot brings the entire industry to a long overdue death.
I'm packing my bags and abandoning this thread immediately.
If Obama is elected, watch all the failing old media institutions line up at the bailout trough. After that, the new National Media won’t have much to say about the value of an independent media in a free society. In fact, few articles will dissent from the Party line at all...
Sorry Jonah. A propaganda machine is not a journalistic organization.
What makes a “journalistic” organization? Is any idiot with a blog or printing press a member of “the press”? Since the MSM is not functioning as a journalistic org, perhaps they should lose any protections under the 1st ammendment?
