WASHINGTON - Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin repeatedly failed to cite a newspaper or magazine when asked what she had read regularly before John McCain picked her as his running mate, saying only that she had read "most of them."
Palin also said that she doesn't believe that the media's coverage of her has been sexist. "It would be sexist if the media were to hold back and not ask me about my experience, my vision, my principles, my values," said Palin, Alaska's governor....

I found it surprising, to say the least. And I still don’t get it.
Doesn't anyone wonder why these stupid questions are only being directed to one of the four candidates?
Good answer from Palin. She avoided even the resemblance of whining.
Yes, the coverage has been sexist, but more: it has been egregiously hateful. Nevertheless she has to shrug this stuff off: no candidate can afford to complain about the media, no matter how well founded the complaints.
Exposing the media bias is our job, not hers.
Actually, the question was “where do you get your worldview”.
Katy desperately wanted to hear “the Bible” as an answer.
Well, duh. Only one of the four has no national track record.
I don’t tell folks where I buy my underwear.
“Palin doesn’t specify where she gets her news”
Somebody call the cops......
I don’t wonder. It’s all to be expected.
Someone that attempts to live a righteous life is going to be attacked by those who don’t want an example to involuntarily self-compare against.
Palin: I have a vast variety of sources where we get our news, too. Alaska isn’t a foreign country, where it’s kind of suggested, “Wow, how could you keep in touch with what the rest of Washington, D.C., may be thinking when you live up there in Alaska?” Believe me, Alaska is like a microcosm of America.
In other words...Alaskans are not stupid yokels Katie.
Palin knew where the question was coming from and trumped Katie by answering it instead of giving her a list.
Wow, of course she wouldn’t specify.
She knows all about the new Red Journalism.
(BTW, she’s got a degree in it.)
We can pretend this stuff doesn’t matter, but it does. She will still draw alot of votes but some of her performances are inexcusable for a politician at this level.
I count two ..
Stop The Hate!!
If there is a state that should be made fun of, it’s Arkansas (woo hoo, we’re better than Mississippi!), yet I didn’t see the media doing that when Clinton was running for President.
An implication that Gov Palin needs to state exactly what she reads... why?
AP knows just how to interest stupid people, and we all know why.
If she had given a specific source, she’d have been accused of being biased against other sources.
In 32 years of following the news, I’ve never seen a public figure treated with less respect by journalists than Sarah Palin. They weren’t even this nasty to Clarence Thomas.
IMHO, Sarah made Katie look pretty foolish suggesting that Katie’s question implied that Alaska was some foreign country where the people don’t know what’s going on with the rest of “civilized” America.
She can’t come out and endorse FOX news...and if she even hinted that coverage of her was biased there would be howls of denial and then they’d really let her have it while pegging her as a whiner.
This is full contact politics; she has her Big Girl britches on and she’s ready to play!
“I get my news from Moveon.org and MediaMatters just like you, Katie!”
Most of the questions that Couric asked Palin sounded like a retarded version of Jeopardy.
Any FReeper can say he or she ‘reads most of them’ (because we do). I suspect Gov. Palin gets her news here. (The question is, is she a deep cover lurker, a lurker with a screen name, or an occasional poster.)
I suspect she was being coy to avoid a firestorm of the form ‘. . .and she gets her news from a “hate site”. . .Bill O’Reilly said FreeRepublic.com is a “hate site”. . .’
This was a softball question- “What newspapers do you read?” Its not even a policy question. She FAILED.
Joe Biden was nastier than this to Clarence Thomas. He deliberately redacted a quote by Justice Thomas (then seeking appointment) to miscast his position as one in support of an activist roll for the court. The 2 sentences immediately following the transcript read by Joe Biden during the hearings totally show Senator Biden’s tactic to be a slimey liberal lie.
To be honest, it sounds like she's worried about answering in a non-approved fashion.
I get my news from FoxNews, MSNBC (it's like another planet), Drudge links across the web, and FreeRepublic links across the web.
Thank you! I have been thinking this same thing all along but just haven’t voiced this opinion on here for fear of being labeled a DUmmy. Bottom line: Yes, the media has been incredibly hateful and disgusting in their coverage of her, but she has done little to combat this and shed the image that she has no place on the national scene. This doesn’t mean that I don’t think that she is ready or qualified, because I do. But she, or the McCain campaign, or more likely both, have allowed the media to define her to the squishy undecideds with no noticeable efforts to refute the MSM onslaught. I honestly don’t know if the McCain campaign is the least bit interested in winning this thing based on their apparent willingness to act as a doormat on far too many occasions.
Bill O’Reilly is foaming at the mouth over this.
Really, all Sarah needed to say that for sure she wasn’t reading Mein Kampf or Karl Marx’s Communist Manifesto
Are you now or have you ever been a member of the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy?
She should not have to answer such a question. I’ve never heard it posed of any other candidate. ANY other candidate.
I want to know if Barack Obama ever read The Daily Worker.
We had a Presidential candidate answer questions about what kind he wears. There’s your Clinton legacy for ya...
Like many Americans, Palin probably doesn't read newspapers or news magazines. She probably gets her info from cable news, the internet, and, as a prominent politician, from briefings.
are you related to Katie?
She did not fail. Her answer was a retort to the real meaning of a ridiculous condescending question.
Sorry - that’s there not their - stupid stupid fingers!
I “get news” spin from the WaPoo, The Old Grey Whore, Time-Lies-CNN, Newsweak, The Boston Glob, USA Ptooey, ButtociatedPress, Al Reuters, the TheLyingSackO’B...
I get news from other sources too.
If you don’t pay attention to the news, you are uninformed.
If you pay attention to the MSM, you are misinformed.
If you say that you get your news from LGF, CNS, WND, LifeNews, etc you will be nailed in the media.
well DUH..... do you actually think Obambi has a "national track record" worth spit???
Do you actually think that an objective comparison of the media's treatment of Obambi with the media's treatment of Palin shows balance, fairness, rationality, and objectivity?
Do you actually think the total failure of major media to "vet" Obambi's sordid Chicago career and close associations with some of the most contemptible figures in our country is reasonable and "fair"?
Don't send me any of the crack you're smoking, I don't want the stuff.
The MSM is never, ever going to ask Gov. Palin a question that isn't designed to make her look bad.
I can easily think of ways a direct answer to that question would have been used against her. Can't you? Really?
Her answer should have been, none of your f===ing business!
I guess you're right. Palin's national record pales besides Obama's extensive national record.
I can see where you're coming from, but I think this is her way of avoiding more "gotcha" questions. For example, if she says she reads the NYT, other questions would come from that.
I'm in the camp of "let Sarah be Sarah".
I was thinking that she did not want to name any "brand names" because that would increase pressure on the editorial boards of those publications to "tell her something". But it would have been quite safe for her to mention one or two leading newspapers in her state, that would have been quite normal for a governor.
She's going to have to stop avoiding specificity, there are truly some safe answers for any politician to give!
Hoping she’d say, “God talks to me.” Or, “Rush and Freerepublic.” Too bad the gov didn’t feel like playing. Now, why does your office have threir panties in a wad? You’re falling for MSN BS.
that’s just little stevie b, he drops by now and then to hate on Sarah and then leaves again.
This was a “gotcha” question, imho.
George Costanza would've said "I got it at the jerk store, looking for more of you."
Actually it’s none of Couric’s business where Governor Palin gets her news.
When the media starts reporting what Barry reads, who his friends are, and who his mentors were, then I’ll worry about what Gov. Palin is reading.
LOL....they are basically asking her what her religion is!!!
> Actually its none of Courics business where Governor Palin gets her news.
Fine, say that. No problem! She’d get props for having a spine. Or lie (it’s not like politicians can’t do that as easily as breathing) and say “Oh, Katie, I only ever watch your network, didn’t you know that?” Couric would have rolled over like a puppy getting her belly scratched, and it would never have come up again.
But don’t look like a high schooler trying to bluff an essay question, like she has in entirely too many questions so far. Once is only human, twice may be excusable depending on topics — but she’s got entirely too many “airhead moments” making the airwaves.
I remember Reagan saying that he did not read the news.
