McCain turns irritable, sarcastic in interview

Des Moines, Iowa (AP) -- Republican presidential candidate John McCain, once renowned for his jocular sessions with journalists, appeared irritable and at times sarcastic in an interview in which he defended running mate Sarah Palin's experience and campaign ads critical of rival Barack Obama.

Meeting Tuesday with the editorial board of The Des Moines Register, McCain was asked why he picked the Alaska governor, someone "who doesn't have a lot of experience."

"Thank you, but I disagree with your fundamental principal that she doesn't have the experience," McCain replied before citing Palin's work as a PTA member, city council member, mayor and governor. "You and I just have a fundamental disagreement, and I am so happy the American people seem to be siding with me."

When it was suggested that Palin's lack of experience worried voters, McCain turned sarcastic.

"Really? I haven't detected that in the polls, I haven't detected that among the base," he said. "If there's a Georgetown cocktail party person who, quote, calls himself a conservative who doesn't like her, good luck. I don't dismiss him. I think the American people have overwhelmingly shown their approval."

Um, when does it get irritable and sarcastic?

McCain needs to do MORE of this sort of thing, not less. Kick a**, name names — get really aggressively against the Dems who got us into this financial crisis in the first place.

But of course Obama is never “arrogant” or “elitist” in interviews.

He should make a commercial putting it to the public that questions why the press questions Palin’s experience level and never questions the 127 day wonders level of experience. He should tell them to ask bama that question.

I guess a community organizers experience is considered higher than a sitting governors. (gang members are community organizers too!)

He offended them by not rolling over and asking for more.

And what the HELL is he doing in Iowa?? What kind of chance does he have there??

Why would you assume that he doesn't have a chance there? A media poll? Really?

Oh, I see...if McCain decides to be direct and honest, and defend his running mate with a direct and honest answer,he’s dismissed as “irritable”. Hmmmm. Irritable being senile and crotchety, right? Ba$t@rds.

Actually I've been waiting for Mr. McCain to release his ‘inner cranky old guy’ self. Enough of the nice-guy uncle routine. Admittedly this is probably the best route to go to win over the squishy middle - since the left and right have already entrenched their positions - but I'd still like to see him flame some of these mediatards...

That's considered irritable? So if you don't agree with something the liberal press says, you've got a hot temper and are irritable and sarcastic? These people suck.

Each and every time the "experience" issue is brought up about Sarah Palin, the response should be, "She's got a lot more experience than Senator Obama."

No explanation is needed beyond that.

The facts don’t fit the quote. This reminds me of the AP’s story about the execution of Jose Medellin about a month back and how if you read their take on events, Jose was a victim who didn’t deserve to die and had an aunt who said, “he was a good boy.”

Then I wiki’d the crime’s actual details and wish that skinning someone alive was a legal punishment in the US.

You can’t trust the media to tell you the truth anymore. Their ranks are infested.

“Actually, McCain did a very good job in the interview. The video is here:

Great job, Sen. McCain! I saw no irritation, or sarcasm, just a long overdue, but most welcome return to straight talk!!

I think the press is trying to keep McCain from going on the attack mode by calling him irritable, etc. He is most effective in attack mode, but the press knows he is most ineffective in the nice mode, so they want to try to punish him for going into attack mode to make him think he is doing something wrong. Hopefully, he does not fall for this trick.

That's what bothered me. The reporter should just report the facts--not editorialize in a "news" article.

Why, oh why, can't McCain speak the one sentence that is incontroverably true on this issue?

My running mate, Governor Palin, has more executive experience then the top of the opposition's ticket

Why is that so hard?

He’s falling into the media trap. He’s spending time defending Palin when he should be attacking Obama.
