Archbishop criticizes Kulongoski on abortion rights fundraiser

by The Associated Press
Tuesday September 30, 2008, 2:34 PM

John G. Vlazny, Archbishop of Portland, walks away from the Dambana, The Filipino Shrine at the Grotto, last Sunday following a dedication ceremony. Saint San Lorenzo Ruiz is honored there.

SALEM -- Archbishop John Vlazny is criticizing Oregon Gov. Ted Kulongoski, a Catholic, for playing host to an abortion rights fundraiser Friday night in Portland.

Vlazny, head of the Archdiocese of Portland, said it's an embarrassment and a scandal for Catholics that Kulongoski is hosting the event two days before the church conducts its annual "Respect Life" mass in Portland to show opposition to abortion.

"For a Catholic governor to host an event of this sort seems a deliberate dissent from the teachings of the church," Vlazny said in a statement today.

Kulongoski is a longtime supporter of a woman's right to choose an abortion.

“The archbishop is the governor’s pastor, and he has only respect and admiration for the archbishop,” Kulongoski spokeswoman Anna Richter Taylor said. “They obviously disagree on the issue of choice.”

Kulongoski and his wife, Mary Oberst, are the honorary hosts of Friday night’s fundraising dinner for NARAL Pro Choice Oregon. U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., is among those scheduled to speak. The event is to be held at a Portland hotel.

Kulongoski and Wyden are among those who need to be un-elected/kicked out of office.

Dear Salvation,

“Not sure how much I can post of an AP story”

I believe that the rule is the title and the first two sentences.

Admin Mod - you may wish to edit to bring this in accord to the AP rule.

From Lifenews.com. link to audio at bottom: Washington, DC -- The Knights of Columbus...has started airing a radio ad that urges Catholics to vote pro-life. The 30-second radio spot encouraging people to "vote pro-life" in the November elections begins running on radio stations around the United States today....

ad features the sound of an unborn baby's heartbeat at 10 weeks. The voice of a woman says, "Listening to this makes me wonder - why would anyone question that her life has begun?" It concludes with the words, "Vote your heart. Vote Pro Life..."

The presidential election features a stark contrast between Barack Obama, who favors abortions throughout pregnancy for any reason and funded at taxpayer expense, and John McCain, who opposes abortions. The radio ad follows newspaper advertisements taking pro-abortion Barack Obama running mate Joe Biden to task for misrepresenting Catholic teaching on abortion and the beginning of human life.

Biden, who is Catholic, has a long pro-abortion voting record and came under fire for some recent statements. In a recent interview, Biden said he personally believes that human life begins at conception but wouldn't make public policy protecting unborn children from abortion based on those views....The ads will run in such leading newspapers as USA Today, the Washington Times, Philadelphia Inquirer and his hometown Delaware News Journal....

If one were excommunicated would it be done publicly or privately? Wouldn't it be instructive to the flock to see the results of purposeful disobedience of the tenets of the Church?

Seattle PI also has story:

Archbishop criticizes Oregon governor on abortion

I assume the Archbishop is in Portland.

The Archbishop can do what Archbishop John Francis Donoghue did in August 2004 -- make a declaration that PRO-ABORTION politicians cannot receive communion in his Archdiocese (and get other Oregon Dioceses to sign on).

Archbishop [Emeritus] Donoghue was able to get the Bishop of Charlotte, NC and the Bishop South Carolina to sign onto to that agreement. However, the Bishop of Savannah, Georgia CHICKENED OUT (shame on him).

Archbishop John Francis Donoghue did it very publicly, but did not name names. He released a document called Worthy to Receive in August 2004. The document prohibited pro-abortion politicians from receiving Holy Communion in the Archdiocese of Atlanta. Than ban is still in effect.

The only way a pro-abortion politician can have the ban lifted is to see the Archbishop, and see what they must do to get it lifted (renounce support for abortion, etc.).

I can post more about that link...

From Archbishop Charles J. Chaput new book Render Unto Caesar: Serving the Nation by Living Our Catholic Beliefs in Political Life (page 225):

The recurrent debates over denying Catholic politicians Communion are usually marked by ignorance about the church and disregard for the real nature of the Eucharist. Denying anyone Communion is a grave matter. It can never be ruled out as a course of action, but it should be reserved for serious cases of public scandal where it can actually make a difference.

I believe that public scandal is definitely what is in Matthew 18:4-7 where Jesus states that corruputing innocent children is so serious one should put a millstone about their neck and be thrown into the sea rather than do that.

Also, what Archbishop Chaput states is that denying the politicians will make a difference, i.e., might make them change their position on issues that are public scandal...

Just something I just ran across, and I felt that the combination of Matthew 18:4-7 and what Archbishop Chaput states is a better references.

Finally, I would add that the governor probably supports Euthanasia, homosexuality activities, homosexual unions, as well as abortion -- adding to the list of things that are public scandal...

Earlier this year, New York Cardinal Edward Egan said Rudy Giuliani should not have received Holy Communion during the pope's visit because the former New York City mayor supports abortion rights.

Communion and abortion rights also became an issue in 2004, when Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry, a Catholic, came under scrutiny for supporting abortion rights in conflict with church teaching.

Most bishops who have spoken about Communion and the responsibility of Catholic politicians have done so in general terms without naming names.

That's been the case in Oregon, where Vlazny has, without naming any specific politicians, said that Catholic officeholders who disagree with church teachings should refrain from receiving Communion.

The archbishop hasn't refused Kulongoski permission to receive communion, archdiocese spokesman Bud Bunce said.

However, Vlazny today called abortion a "grave evil," and urged Catholics to contact Kulongoski's office about Friday's fundraiser "to remind him of the demands of personal integrity as a member of our faith community in the exercise of his office."
