Kansas Senators Roberts, Brownback to Oppose Bailout Bill

WASHINGTON (AP) _ Both of Kansas' Republican senators say they'll oppose a revised plan to rescue the nation's financial industry.

Sen. Pat Roberts said his decision reflects the will of thousands of Kansas voters who have contacted his office to say the $700 billion measure is unacceptable.

"It’s important Congress act responsibly to shore up America’s confidence in the financial system. Unfortunately, this proposal is still flawed. It does not protect taxpayers, contains no meaningful oversight, may not solve the crisis and is seen by most Americans as rewarding greed," Roberts said.

Roberts' challenger on the November ballot, Democrat Jim Slattery, said he didn't know enough about the details of the plan to say whether or not he'd vote for it. However, he said he knew enough to know "the devil's in the details." He also says Congress needs to be sure to reward taxpayers with whatever it passes.

"It is clear the current Senate bill doesn't do enough for taxpayers and I have explained what I believe needs to be done for a bill to receive my support," Slattery said. "After voting for many of the policies that have caused this problem, Sen. Roberts has been deafening in his silence during this crisis and has failed to proposes how we begin to fix this mess."

Sen. Sam Brownback said the nation is entering a recession and called on Congress to pass a bill that works to restore ``the broader economy.''

Good to see at least some GOP senators getting their backs up. Two from KS, two from AL, it's a start.

Good. Some in the GOP still have their spine and balls intact. Nice to know when the revolution comes.

Roberts is up for reelection, I believe. Regardless, that damned thing will pass the senate tonight I’d wager.

Hopefully the House will get some more concessions before they pass it.

The increase of the FDIC cap was a decent enough start but that’s all it is IMO, there should’ve been a lot more market driven solution built in.

Besides, why should I trust that the US government will be able to insure my deposits on down the road?? I don’t trust them for ANYTHING anymore!

If McCain wants to show what his anti pork credentials are made` of, here’s his chance. This thing’s a pig. DC needs a voter induced enema.

I’m expecting Cornyn to vote no, but Hutchison rarely vote no on a bad bill.

They were voting on an amendement I believe. Not the actual bill yet.

They voted to adopt the amendments to the original bill. Now they’re going to vote for the actual bill, and the vote will be identical, or nearly so.

A $700 billion bailout turns into a $900 billion pork bill.

The “Maverick” and “anti-earmark” McCain voted Aye, along with Biden, Obama, Reid, Clinton, etc.

So much for Change.

Good for Sen Brownback and Roberts.

I sent them an email earlier before the vote to oppose it.

As Kansans we implore you to vote now on the Bailout bill with all the pork that has been added to this bill. I am watching it on CSPAN being debated right now and am alarmed about what we are giving away.

My family is engaged in a business in XXXXXXX, Kansas and have felt the rath of the poor economy of the last year. But giving away the house and the farm does not help America.

Please vote this bad bill down.

Sincerely,

Mr. & Mrs Redacted.

This bill did not go along party lines. My senator, Stabenow, voted against it and she’s a Democrat. Were these votes more along regional lines rather than party? or for certain industries, other than the obvious ones?

Texas’s wimpy Cornyn and the feminist Hutchison, who caved and voted yes, should be replaced by two of the fine young conservative House members who voted no on this Wall St. welfare bill.

Slattery wan't to reward (non) tax payers which is code vote for me and I'll pay for your votes. My three GOPers voted NO!!!

I am very proud of our Senators.

The only KS senator or representative who voted for the bailout was Dennis Moore-D. Even my REP, Nancy Boyda-D, voted against it. I guess she didn’t want to lose in November.

I called Boyda’s office today and asked if she would be leading a campaign to get rid of Pelosi as House Majority leader. I said that if not, a vote for her is a vote for Nancy Pelosi so I guess I’ll have to vote for Lynn Jenkins.

Good tagline. I remember saying that for 8 years during the clinton WH.

I began using it when Mr. Bush became president. I’m sure many Christians said it when the Clintistas were in power, LOL.

Dennis Moore is my U.S. rep. He was on local talk radio here in KC a couple of days ago. When asked about why he voted for the House bill when when his constituents were overwhelmingly against it, he said rather lose the election than do the wrong thing (by voting no).
Hopefully, this is the year he goes down in defeat. However, Johnson County seems to be full of RINOs that keep re-electing him, so I don't have much confidence that he will...

The increase of the FDIC cap was a decent enough start but that’s all it is IMO

How's that? The average bank account in N.America is somewhere around $5K, according to Dave Ramsey. How does raising the FDIC limit to $250K do anything but increase the liability of the FDIC should something happen?

Additionally, don't banks and lending institution have to pay for FDIC insurance? How many institution are not paying their FDIC premiums? The FDIC won't tell us. What good is FDIC coverage if the bank's policy has lapsed?

Brownback has received more than his fair share of criticism on these boards, but he is a good conservative voter.
