A jeering crowd taunted a suicidal teenager as he threatened to jump from the top of a city-centre car park.
In a shocking indictment of modern Britain, youths who gathered in the street below yelled at 17-year-old Shaun Dykes to kill himself over the course of three hours. One allegedly shouted: 'How far can you bounce?'
The A-level student eventually plunged 60ft to his death after police negotiators tried in vain to talk him down. In a final sickening act, some of those responsible for the abuse outside the Westfield shopping centre in Derby rushed from behind the police cordon to take pictures of the teenager's body on their mobile phones.
Yesterday police branded the mob's behaviour at the scene of Saturday's tragedy a 'shocking reflection on society'.

Great Britain has really gone to hell. Beyond that, it’s hard to find the right words for something like this.
There is never, ever justifiable reason to encourage someone to kill himself. It is always wrong, like murder or rape.
A law like that would:
a) Punish and discourage people from encouraging other people to commit suicide.
b) Remove these people from society until they have paid for their crime--Do you really want these people serving as teachers, police, firefighters, psychologists, doctors, financial advisors, etc.?
c) Allow police to arrest them and remove them from a scene such as this.
d) Allow families to recover damages against them after they have been identified by police.
I'm sure there are other benefits. This conduct is like yelling "fire" in a crowded theater and endangers the lives not only of the sick and despondent but of bystanders as well.
Now hold on. British colonialism civilized half this planet, and it bore the U.S.A. The other half of the world was civilized by Mohammedan-influenced Spain. Where would you rather be from -- Columbia, or Canada? It just doesn't make sense that a people like that would self-destruct in a scant two generations. If Englishmen were free to be Englishmen and bear arms, among other returned freedoms, it might have a serious impact on what we can trust is a minority of displaced flambouyant whackos.
Who there -- you? Me? -- would have had the gumption to shout them down? So how do we know how others observing this felt?
Brits seem to have no compunction whatsoever about labeling American society and culture as “brutish,” taking us to task at every turn for the violence and crime in our culture, our pro-gun mentality, etc. I’d always thought that attitude smacked of Euro-elitism and snobbery - well, it would appear the attitude also smacks of something else...HYPOCRISY.
A note to our friends in the UK - clean up your own house before complaining about ours.

Yes, that's really all there is to say. I'd like to think that those who goaded him on are sorry, but I doubt that is the case.

For all the problems that the United States has, it hasn’t sunk to the level that Great Britain has. Whether that will continue to be the case remains to be seen.
Shaun’s fellow citizens are probably glad that there are less “carbon emissions” now. Maybe that’s why so many of them have been writing their wishes in small group discussions for the presumed destruction of the USA by foreign enemies (including Tory members of the Royal Society of Arts).
What do expect from a society from which God has been banished? What are humans without souls but beasts?

It doesn't take a huge percentage of amoral, valueless, feral noncontributors to cause civilization to crumble, especially if there are external factors stressing the system.

A while back, some ingenious company invented a sticky goo that was designed to be sprayed a distance, perhaps up to 25 feet, at rioters, to immobilize them. If some kind of strong nylon strap could be included in the spray, it might be an effective way of zapping jumpers so that even if they fell or jumped, they would be dangling in mid air.
Somewhat like a bug hit by a frog’s tongue.
The back of the canister that fired the goo and the strap would be tied off, so little strength would be required other than for the recoil.
If the jumper backed up, he would be stuck to the wall behind him.
About the only problem would be if the goo covered his mouth and nose, preventing breathing. So optimally, they would go for an abdomen shot.

One question...have you been to the U.K. lately?
Why didn’t the bobbies disperse the crowd? If the jumper saw them sticking up for him rather than letting the crowd egg him on, maybe he’d still be alive.
Psychologically, I don’t think it’s known if the crowd can actually influence a jumper, and suicides might be too individually motivated to be able to tell.
That is, they might not actually be intending to commit suicide, just wanting attention, which is common. They also might be out of their minds either with mental illness or drugs and alcohol. Then again they might be highly interactive with their audience.
I was rather surprised with how unsuccessful suicides are usually dealt with these days. I knew one young woman who tried to kill herself and was put in the County mental health for two weeks to determine if she was insane or not. Then they just released her, not being able to hold her longer.
Fortunately her friends got her to a woman’s shelter that gave her a bus ticket to return to her family. This made all the difference in the world.
