“I believe it is dishonest to say that McCain voted for this “with enthusiasm”.”

I don’t remember him saying, “let me read it first”. He pretty much has been saying he’s ready to sign whatever they come up with.

The Americans (the people and their government) have for the last thirty years or so internalized the philosophy that "debt" is that sexy babe who's fun to party with and who always puts out, while "prudence" is that sour-pussed old nag that was always hanging around at their grandparents, trying to spoil everyone's fun.

Sooner or later, softly or brutally, the old nag is going to come into her own.

I wish there was a slow, gentle way for it to happen. And if I thought this bailout was going to be that way, I would be all in favor. Truly, I would.

But I just don't see that it that way. If we do get a plan passed that avoids an immediate meltdown, America will call up that hot chick for one more -last- fling.

Consider Harry Reid's "slip of the tongue" when he mentioned that there's a large, well known insurance company that is on the verge of failure.

Exactly how reliable a source, in your opinion, is Harry Reid, when there are hundreds of billions in left wing pork riding on how you interpret his comments?

One of them is notorious in our industry for their mismanaged cash flow and I know they rely on a credit line.

Look, I'm sorry for your company if its A/R is heavily tied up in these deadbeats, but my sympathy for them doesn't exactly peg the needle.

Why did McCain vote for it ? Because he’s clueless about economics and is not a conservative anyhow.

The belief that this government led and ever more managed economy is a working perpetual motion machine is going to catch up to us sooner rather than later.

AS I PASS through my incarnations in every age and race,
I make my proper prostrations to the Gods of the Market Place.
Peering through reverent fingers I watch them flourish and fall,
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings, I notice, outlast them all.

We were living in trees when they met us. They showed us each in turn
That Water would certainly wet us, as Fire would certainly burn:
But we found them lacking in Uplift, Vision and Breadth of Mind,
So we left them to teach the Gorillas while we followed the March of Mankind.

We moved as the Spirit listed. They never altered their pace,
Being neither cloud nor wind-borne like the Gods of the Market Place,
But they always caught up with our progress, and presently word would come
That a tribe had been wiped off its icefield, or the lights had gone out in Rome.

With the Hopes that our World is built on they were utterly out of touch,
They denied that the Moon was Stilton; they denied she was even Dutch;
They denied that Wishes were Horses; they denied that a Pig had Wings;
So we worshipped the Gods of the Market Who promised these beautiful things.

When the Cambrian measures were forming, They promised perpetual peace.
They swore, if we gave them our weapons, that the wars of the tribes would cease.
But when we disarmed They sold us and delivered us bound to our foe,
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings said: "Stick to the Devil you know."

On the first Feminian Sandstones we were promised the Fuller Life
(Which started by loving our neighbour and ended by loving his wife)
Till our women had no more children and the men lost reason and faith,
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings said: "The Wages of Sin is Death."

In the Carboniferous Epoch we were promised abundance for all,
By robbing selected Peter to pay for collective Paul;
But, though we had plenty of money, there was nothing our money could buy,
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings said: "If you don't work you die."

Then the Gods of the Market tumbled, and their smooth-tongued wizards withdrew
And the hearts of the meanest were humbled and began to believe it was true
That All is not Gold that Glitters, and Two and Two make Four
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings limped up to explain it once more.

As it will be in the future, it was at the birth of Man
There are only four things certain since Social Progress began.
That the Dog returns to his Vomit and the Sow returns to her Mire,
And the burnt Fool's bandaged finger goes wabbling back to the Fire;

And that after this is accomplished, and the brave new world begins
When all men are paid for existing and no man must pay for his sins,
As surely as Water will wet us, as surely as Fire will bum,
The Gods of the Copybook Headings with terror and slaughter return.

-Rudyard Kipling

"And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird."

Yeah, I am sorry, as well. They do pay, but when it is close to the end or beginning of a quarter, they are usually late. They are really just poorly managed, as their retail customers complain about lack of invoicing, which slows their collections.

This is an international company with branches in every major country and even more companies under each national branch. They are closely held. I deal with one of the relatively smaller US companies held by the conglomerate. They just took over one out of 3 of their major competitors, with capitol from the parent company. The other two are smaller, US-based and diligent. Any vendor selling into this industry’s market must deal with these distributors or lose market share.

My point was not sympathy for them. Actually, I dislike them and so do their customers, but they make up a large enough portion of my tiny business, that I need them. They have a large number of sales reps and also distribute products no one else has, so their customers need them. My point was, that here I am, an older, self-employed, rural woman of modest means and _I_ realized that I am directly affected by this mess on two fronts. Three fronts, actually, as my husband’s IRA is totally in equities. Haven’t received the statement, yet, but everyone I know is reporting a 5%-6% loss for the month.

Unfortunately, this is not just about fat cats and deadbeats. I could never get a loan outside of a high interest credit card with which to run my small business. If I am short when suppliers need to be paid, I maintain a capitol account which I use to pay bills or taxes or buy equipment when my cash flow is out of synch. I also maintain a very low debt level and have a high credit score I don’t use. Others continue to operate on OPM. It is the way of the business world. None of us small fry have any say in any of this, but we are impacted, anyway.

They just took over one out of 3 of their major competitors, with capitol from the parent company.

And yet they can't survive without a revolving credit line and without stiffing their suppliers.

Again, I appreciate your position, but if we inoculate the habitual mismanager from the consequences of his behavior, where does that lead us in the long term....

Let’s change the paradigm. I’ve noticed recently on talk radio and everywere on the ‘net that people are WAITING FOR A LEADER !

Folks - why wait ! BECOME a leader !

That’s what this country has always been about - ordinary citizens doing whatever they deem necessary to solve a problem.

Too right.

I doubt I am the only small business at the mercy of big companies in very tight markets. It is no different than the brow-beaten employee who must put up with the boss or lose his income in a tight job market.

They could very well survive, thrive and manage their business responsibly, just like those of us without hundreds of millions of dollars are forced to. Not only are they innoculated from consequences, they are, like our so-called *leaders*, arrogant in their right to do so.

All of this conversation applies in spades to the government, the banks and the financial institutions.

What do all of us do about it? Calls for a tax revolt have gone nowhere over the past 30 years. No one marches on DC and if they would, it would accomplish nothing. It makes no difference whom we elect because the system we elect them to encourages arrogant irresponsibility. Too many have had it too good for too long and no one wants to rock the boat, especially when it is taking on water and instead of fixing the leak, the captain and crew take on even more freight.

Fannie Mae and Freddi Mac was about political jobbery and looting, not reparations. For the latter, they will insist upon straight cash to spend.
