McCain plans fiercer strategy against Obama

Article Launched: 10/03/2008 07:11:11 PM PDT

WASHINGTON — Sen. John McCain and his Republican allies are readying a newly aggressive assault on Sen. Barack Obama's character, believing that to win in November they must shift the conversation back to questions about the Democrat's judgment, honesty and personal associations, several top Republicans said.

With just a month to go until Election Day, McCain's team has decided that its emphasis on the senator's biography as a war hero, experienced lawmaker and straight-talking maverick is insufficient to close a growing gap with Obama. The Republican's campaign also is eager to move the conversation away from the economy, an issue that strongly favors Obama and has helped him to a lead in many recent polls.

"We're going to get a little tougher," a senior Republican operative said, indicating that a fresh batch of TV ads are coming. "We've got to question this guy's associations. Very soon. There's no question that we have to change the subject here," said the operative, who was not authorized to discuss strategy and spoke on the condition of anonymity.

I dunno... do people have to be reminded again and again that he is a war hero? It didn't work for Bush Sr. and Dole, both of whom are also war hero. Besides, McCain seems uncomfortable to keep talking about it. The Dims will try to steer discussion to the economy. Rather than run from it, they have to embrace it and inflict a serious damage such as telling the public the real reason of this crisis: trying to combine socialism with capitalism.

>> experienced lawmaker and straight-talking maverick

Uh, yeah. Sure. As evidenced by McCain’s performance of late in the bailout debacle.

Agreed! I have been so bummed out lately at how soft McCain has been I have tuned out. I fell asleep last night because I didn't have the stomach to watch the debates and now I am regretting it. Tonight instead of Fox News I watched Payton Place on TCM. I checked out of politics thinking I would vote for McCain but check out besides that and resign myself to an Obama presidency.

I am hoping he goes into attack mode so I can enjoy politics again. I have seen every movie on TCM already and I need something new. ;o)

McCain just doesn’t have his heart in it.

Sure he does. He just saves his ire and cunning for the base.

He's not one of us. Has contempt for us.

Idiots are about a month late. One of Sarah Palin's trump cards is character. As for Obama, he is a sewer rat who doesn't have any. That's why he hides from the public every way he can, and the contrast is why the 'rats react toward Palin like a bunch of vampires reacting to sunrise.

The problem is, their stupid hands off approach has allowed Obama to define himself when they needed to do it for him.

Oh well, it's just the future of the Republic. Nothing for McCain to get upset about.

I have felt like John has been campaigning for the other side.

Me too. But I also have to remember that what I see and read is through the MSM filter. Things are not good, but probably better than I think.

Can you believe they waited this long!? These so called political consultants must be completely out of touch with the reality on the ground. These guys probably think the MSM is unbiased and will give McCain objective coverage.

It is going to be a lot tougher from what I am hearing. Gloves are coming off. McCain/GOP sitting on plenty of money that is going to go after the slime Obama.

But why would a Republican “operative” tell some guy at “mercury news”? And why wouldn’t exposing Obama’s personal integrity and associations have been an option from the very beginning?

Is this another McCain bashing thread? I thought my browser got hijacked and took me to the DU.

Not all of us share your anti-McCain views. But if you all like the alternative, if you want REAL socialism, or should I say communism, your non-support of McCain will lead to an Obama WH. THAT should be where the REAL concern should lie. Compalin about McCain, but the alternative is way worse.

Two debates left. McCain must push all Obie's buttons and get him to lose it. It is doable but I'm not sure McCain has it in him.

He didn't get played, he agreed with this bill. Period.

That is even worse, and I knew that, but the perception now is that Pelosi got the best of him, which she did. It's not the best for Americans, but in politics, millionaire Pelosi, who cares about nothing other than her own power, just won on a Royal Flush. I find it hard to believe that we are the few who see it this way.
