LOS ANGELES --

California U.S. Reps. Loretta and Linda Sanchez say their brother Henry and his girlfriend are missing after a possible boating crash off the Southern California coast.

The sisters said in a statement issued Friday that a debris field found off the coast contained fragments from the boat their brother was aboard with his girlfriend, Penny Avila. Authorities said life jackets, a cooler with food, a sandal, and pieces of a boat were found in the water, according to the Long Beach Press-Telegram newspaper.

The Coast Guard said Henry Sanchez and his girlfriend left Alamitos Bay near Long Beach late Wednesday or early Thursday en route to Santa Catalina Island and never arrived.

Which one of them is the hefty one? Linda or Loretta? I think Linda. The non-hefty one is pretty good looking.

A ten-foot dinghy is far too small for that kind of trip in the open ocean.

They mentioned a Bayliner, which sounds like they were using a small motorboat. I would hesitate to go out there with a boat twice that size without a goodly amount of advance preparation.

They were not in a dingy they were in a bayliner pleasure craft and they went out at midnight

"Hefty" or "Lefty"?

If the latter, both.

Bayliner makes some big boats. One of my best friends has one two slips down from me.

Seems kind of strange that they would be going out in a boat that small (26 ft.) at midnight. Could have easily run into a barge without proper lighting or something. Perhaps alcohol was involved?

I remember Loretta Shanchez (D) beat Republican Bob Dornan (in Orange county I think). There was a lot of controversy about illegals voting in that race, and she won by a very small margin.

I used to sail from Newport to Catalina quite often and was a bit miffed the article didn’t have the sense to mention the size of the boat, so I just made an absurd suggestion. Depends on the wind and waves, but anything less than 40 feet ona good day, for a power boat, out there would give me the runs.

You know what,, once again, im proud to be associated with all of you. Nobody here acts like DU or the Huffers do when a Repub has a tragic accident, a death, etc.

Just another reason why i hope our side prevails.

"The Bayliner left Long Beach about midnight for a trip to Two Harbors on Catalina Island, which this weekend is hosting the 19 th annual Buccaneer Days end-of-summer bash."

Looks like he was in a 26/28' Bayliner. Catalina is about 22 miles out from that harbor. Its real common to run over after midnight then sleep over there till breakfast time. Some good breakfast places along the water. I lived in a condo on it for 13 yrs. Bad part is that you cross the main shipping channel into Long Beach harbor and it can be a real busy place for cargo ships and barges. Looks like they got hit by one of them. Those are some real monster ships. They run in a holding pattern out there waiting for berthing to unload their cargo containers. I've made that run in boats that size and it can be frightening to see one of those monsters going by you even at 200 yards.
Prayer for them and their families.

One night when we were near the shipping channel the fog was so thick you couldn’t see much beyond the gunwales, the water was like glass and we could hear the bow wave of something very big moving through the water very close to us. Scary!

That visual picture sent chills up my spine.....

Sailing the smallest craft on the water, blinded by darkness or fog in a busy channel without radar is a floating Russian Roulette.....

This was no “accident” — it was preordained as the result of stupidity and criminal negligence...

“The Coast Guard suspects the missing vessel was involved in a collision” with a barge in tow in the vicinity of the debris field, Young said. “Investigators have identified fiberglass debris on the barge that has been visually matched to fiberglass debris recovered from the water by responders.”
