The thing about folks in Appalachia is that they will respect a man, even though they might not call him by a polite name for what he does and can do. A competent black electrician, for example, will be hired even if he isn’t the object of politically correct posturing. So a black candidate who only talks and doesn’t do anything well but talk is not going to be the object of a large vote across racial lines. Doug Wilder was elected because he showed an ability to do things other than talk.
Do you suppose the loyal Party workers put out all the signs as ordered but the residents later did some need yard work?

Whatever the intent, articles like this will make a confirm in the minds of many that a Republican victory is invalid. It's exactly what Gore, The Dims, and the MSM did in 2000.
In the connection it's interesting how the use of "swiftboating" as a pejorative is based on the supposition that the charges of the swiftboaters were shown to be false. As far as I know, that has not been proved, but there are a lot of dims out there who are absolutely sure that we won in 2004 because we lied successfully.
Thinking this kind of thing gives them a way to avoid thinking about the reality of the political complexion of the country, stokes their anger and resentment, and to some degree weakens the ability to govern of whoever wins.
I read that while there was good evidence that the Dim machine in Chicago cheated wildly in 1960, Nixon decided not to contest the election on the grounds that casting such doubts as wuld inevitably arise from doing so would have a bad effect on the nation. So tricky Dick cared more about the US than Al Gore or, now, the Dims in general.

Yep it is the same here in Chester VA. The only place I see Obama signs is closer to Richmond city limits. I’ve seen some lone Warner signs but McCain/Palin signs are popping up everywhere. There are more this year than I saw Bush/Cheney in 2004. I finally got my Mark Warner lied Bumper sticker. Northern VA always worries me but McCain is going to do just fine in the rest of the state.
This thread is just dripping with sarcasm...and alas, I’m the last to figure it out.
We all like to say things like that, since it makes us sound all educated and progressive in a safe manner, but I think the truth is going to be hard to hide, especially in areas long considered really liberal. The Deep South already went thru it's era of racial turmoil, but I think you'll find more than a few pockets of white resentment at the results of court activism on racial quotas and affirmative action rulings as well as perceptions on reverse affirmative action.
The NORTH is still in a place of racial tension and I'll bet that white backlash comes to the forefront in the privacy of the voting booth. This really isn't so much about color as it is about entitlement backlash. Unfortunately, in the minds of many, that equivocates the issue to a "black thing." I'm not certain that is correct. But I seem to be immersed in the entire issue all day during my work hours since I teach deep in an inner city public high school. So I see this thing from the inside out and that might ummmmm (forgive me) "color" my perspectives a little bit.
Interestingly enough, I didn't see any fauxbama bumper stickers on any car bumpers either.

I hope you’re right and I hope that quote about clinging to guns and religion is repeated often on the air in Roanoke, Lynchburg and points south and west. For that matter, run it our of Wheeling WV and everybody in Appalachia will hear it over and over again.

You are spot on, as far as I am concerned. I don’t think the property owner wanted to be seen as an Obama supporter. I am guessing a lot of Southern Illinois Democrats do NOT plan to vote for him. (I sure hope I am guessing right.)
