Mother is denied pill by Muslim pharmacist

A woman was refused the "morning-after pill" by a supermarket's duty pharmacist because it was against his religious beliefs.

Ruth Johnson, 33, who has two children, including a month-old baby, had not been using her usual method of contraception with her fiancée.

She went to the Tesco dispensary in Hewitts Circus, Cleethorpes, Lincs, and asked an as assistant for the pill Levanelle.

Miss Johnson was told it could only be dispensed by the locum pharmacist who was called to speak with her.

She said: "He came out from behind a screen and told me that he would not be allowing me to buy the pill from him because he had a right to refuse to sell it on the basis of his personal beliefs.

"The pharmacist was of Asian origin so I asked him if it was because of his religion and he replied 'Yes'."

Miss Johnson, from Cleethorpes, was left feeling ashamed and worried and complained to the store manager who told her they couldn't force the pharmacist to sell the product.

She said: "I asked him if a Jewish or Muslim checkout operator could refuse to sell pork or alcohol or if a Jehovah's Witness could refuse to sell birthday and Christmas cards."

Her concern is that the policy could deter teenage girls from seeking the morning-after pill.

nothing more important than life.

When I want the opinion of the Haji pill-pusher, then I'll ask it.

Go somewhere else.

Instead of the 'news' which shows she wasn't interested in taking care of the problem but stirring the pot.

It's none of his damned business.

It is when his/her religious beliefs comes into question. She can go around the corner to another pharmacy like most people do when they aren't satisfied with the service.

Yes. This is just another example of how abortion and the “morning after” pill are just another form of birth control for many rather than for rape, incest, etc.

Since when am I bound by the religious dictates of a low-level employee? Should I be refused blood if my nurse is a Jehovah's Witness? Should I be refused pork if my checkout clerk is a Muslim?

I don't give a damn about the Haji's beliefs. If my wife is going to get a pill that her doctor prescribed for her, the pill-pusher is not to second-guess that decision.

Okay, we see you reject even the Hippocratic oath as well.

Your lack of ethics of any sort is quite evident, You too have a lower moral position than the muslims.

Truly sad.

Then he shouldn't take a job as a pharmacist.

A pharmacist's job is to dispense as written.

Judge again rules druggists can deny morning-after pill

“what if the law protected a right of terminal patients to take poison and end their lives? And what if pharmacies began stocking a particularly “humane” cocktail of poisons that a doctor could prescribe for eligible patients? When a patient walked into a pharmacy to fill that prescription, many pharmacists would decline, believing that handing poison to a suicidal person is tantamount to murder. The law should never compel people to participate in murder, even if the law allows that murder to occur, for whatever reason.”

I had my baby boy last Saturday. Sometimes it is painful to sit down or stand up. I don’t even want to think about sex. OUCH!

A pharmacist is not a 'low level employee' for your information. Besides, take your wife's prescription someplace else if you don't like the phamacy's policies.

Maybe you and your wife should plan ahead and not expect a doctor or a pharmacist to get you out of the mess you got yourselves in.
