ABC News' Teddy Davis and Arnab Datta Report: Part way through Tuesday's debate, Obama press secretary Bill Burton emailed reporters asking: "Did John McCain just refer to Obama as 'that one'?"
"Folks are going to remember that," Burton told ABC News in a separate email.
Showing the power of a well-timed email, McCain's reference to Obama as "that one" became a topic of discussion in the spin room following the debate.
Obama strategist David Axelrod called it "odd."
"Senator Obama has a name," said Axelrod. "You'd expect your opponent to use that name."
Asked about the Obama campaign's effort to draw attention to the reference, McCain adviser Steve Schmidt sought to brush it off.
"I think it is diversionary on their part," said Schmidt, referring to the Obama campaign.
McCain's "that one" reference came when the Arizona senator was contrasting his opposition to the 2005 Bush energy bill which was, in McCain's words, "loaded down with goodies, billions for the oil companies," with Obama's support for the measure.
"You know who voted for it? You might never know. That one," said McCain, gesticulating towards Obama. "You know who voted against it? Me."
It was an appropriate assertion. I liked it.
He could have said “that boy” ...
Why did McCain refer to Obama as “that one”? And was it racist to talk like that?
LOL!
Sarah Palin winked four times in the VP debate too!
Equally as irrelevant.
I also noticed that Brokaw said John McCain but when talking about Obama said Senator Obama several times. Why not Senator for both?
What was McCain suppose to say, “The One”?
Yeah, but then you would get mad if he said his name "Barack Hussein Obama".
Shades of Ross Perot's "You people" comment?
I would have called him something else. I guess “that one” works.
McCain was clearly referring to which “one” of the two on the stage had voted for that bill.
Man, they are really reaching for something to hit McCain on. I guess the Keating 5 idea didn’t work so well. Duh.
I thought it was a funny, kinda Reaganish colloquialism. Something like “Well, there that one goes again. You can always rely on that one to be “green” behind the ears.”
Obama dehumanizes our troops, is referred to the as “THE ONE” by his cult worshipers, yea I think that works for me!
I don’t recall Obama cloyingly referring to McCain as “John”.
Maybe he did, but I didn’t notice it like last time.
Exactly. That’s why they’re whining.
He should have said shithead.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but at some point during the debate did Obama not refer to McCain as “the guy”? That is a racist remark!
It makes as much sense to me to call it that as it does to call McCain’s comment racist. McCain must have done better than I thought if this is what the media is seizing upon.
look, conservatives in the republican party have for a long time complained about McCain and his attitude toward others. Let’s not all act like we suddenly don’t know who we’re dealing with here. If it was calculated it was dumb, if it wasn’t it was dumb. either way, what is everyone talking about? It was dumb, and completely in character.
Its odd to point out Obamas vote to give tax breaks to oil companys?
I agree with Axelrod. It sounded rather odd as well as dismissive. Perhaps he was trying to talk folksy — one can picture an English barmaid referring to someone as “that one”, but it sounded unnatural in this context.
“Senator Obama has a name,” said Axelrod. “You’d expect your opponent to use that name.”
Barack Hussein Obama? :)
It was almost like he was calling Obama “that Negro”. At least that is what people are saying on the ABC blog.
To me, this was the big thing of the night. Obama was befuddled with his answer. He doesn't have a doctrine.
McCain Doctrine was clear --------Victory Doctrine.
Obama truly lost the debate right there. I couldn't believe that the FoxNewsChannel pundits did not pick up on it.
LOL. That’s wrong.
Yawn, Did the viewers understand that Obozo voted for more tax cuts for the oil companies, lets hope so...
I highly doubt there was any racist intent. Just a not well thought through solecism.
Who do you think won the debate? This one or that one?
Sounds like a 1960’s sitcom. That One. Shows Obama in a brunette wig, smiling, flying a kite, entering the Capitol, reviewing the Obama Youth columns as they hand-jive in lock-step.
Get ready for more of this silliness. The latest Democrat talking point is discovering code words for race in utterances by Republicans.
I think until he furnishes his legitimate birth certificate, “That one” is quite appropriate.
Yes! Obama has a name it's HUSSEIN! But we have been told to not use that name! But! What McCain was referring to with "that One" is one of the one's who MILKED Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac! You know, that ONE!
Obama doctrine??? It is OK for preemption as long as it is a democrat doing it...end
I think McCain was trying to bait Zero into correcting him,
you know, “Sorry, John, it’s ‘The One’”. Would have been classic.
That is the most ridiculous thing I have heard.
I guess it was cool when Senator Obama didn’t refer to Senator McCain with the appropriate honorific but rather disgracefully and inappropriately by his first name in the first debate.
Honestly, I hope the media makes a big deal out of this because it is so asinine it will probably pick up votes for McCain from people who are sick and tired of political correctness run amok. Not to mention racism hucksters.
“That one” is better than “Thing 1”. .

Which one? BARACK ?? or how about HUSSEIN??
Projection. Look inward.
"that One" who milked the sub-prime loans! You know! THAT ONE! Obama was taking Citibank to court for not loaning money to people who didn't have the money to afford homes. You know! THAT ONE!
LOL
I wish he would call him zero. Did’nt he have his own Presidential seal with a zero on it?
We just refer to him as “it”.
Hate to say it, but we’re the desperate ones right now. Obama’s up in all the polls, capitalizing on the financial crisis the way he used to, but can no longer, capitalize on Iraq. McCain had the economy at “drill, baby, drill” and Sara Palin getting him to loosen up on Alaska. It’s an entirely new ballgame with unemployment climbing and the Dow falling to pre-Clinton levels, not to mention the NY Post’s dour headline this morning. We need an 11th-hour reprieve.
That could be an ad.
Senator Obama’s campaign extols me to use his name. So I will...Senator Barrack Hussein Obama.
I have damaged hearing, goes way back to the ANG in 1957-59 when I was 17-19 and on a rifle team; we have a 2 year old who has little respect for political seriousness so I repaired to the garage to listen to the debate on the radio.
I saw McCain gesture toward that one, thought it quite clever, myself.
Me too. It was no more"racist" than all the other lame bullshit these race pimps are selling. It just put Obama where he belongs--in about the third row, taking notes.
