McCain must become TRUMAN. "Give 'em Hell"
me | 10/8/08 | Timeout

Posted on 10/08/2008 8:51:35 AM PDT by Timeout

I've written this to several bloggers, hoping they'll read it and pass it on to SOMEONE in the McCain camp.

Harry Truman was unpopular, but ran against an even-more-unpopular Congress. He said he'd go back to Washington and knock heads together. The crowd would yell "Give 'em Hell, Harry!".
His reply: "I'm just going to tell the truth...and they'll think it's Hell!".
With Congress at 10% approval, McCain should emulate Truman.

On McCain's proposed spending freeze, Obama says: "John wants to use a hatchet, but what we need is a scalpel".

McCain should respond (passionately):

"Scalpel? Hatchet?! No...we'll need an AXE! People are already paying dearly for government's screw ups. Get government off Americans' backs, let them keep and spend their own money. [Shake head] No, a "scalpel" won't get rid of all the Washington players feeding at the public trough: politicians, lobbyists, contractors, non-performing bureaucrats. We'll scrutinize every department, every new bill for whether it helps everyday working people. If Congress and the bureaucracy fight me...one thing you know about me: I'll fight back...hard! I'll name names and make them household words! As Harry Truman said, "I'll tell the truth. They'll just think it's Hell!". Where called for, the Justice Department will conduct real investigations...quickly. No coddling of Washington insiders.

[point to chest, earnestly]
My friends, if you want a fighter in the White House, I'm your man."

Repeat all day/every day. Result: The day after the election McCain may very well grin and hold up an MSM headline like Truman's "Obama Defeats McCain" [photoshop, anyone?].

Why doesn't his camp recognize what a ripe target Washington is?! They seem to assume that voters want "reassurance". Not the people I know! We want someone in Washington to get MAD AS HELL! Like we are.

Anyway, I just hope someone reads it. Better yet, publishes it. That message---and only that message---can win it for McCain. In interviews he could say he's been fighting Washington for years...could do it in his sleep. The next president is going to have his plate full with domestic issues....while fending off our enemies at the same time. It's no time for a novice.

McCain is a fighter. McCain is perfectly willing to fight the status quo within the Republican party.

And only the Republican party.

I was thinking more along the lines of the old coot down the block who yells at kids to get off his lawn.

TRUMAN. "Give 'em Hell", mgc1122 wrote: Yeah, we need Truman ... what we got is the Fuller Brush man.

Geem I thought Bush was the new Truman...who is going to be exonerated by history. BTW, Truman never gave anybody "hell" except an insubordinate McArthur. If Bush had given Gen. Casey, Paulson, Rumsfeld "hell" etc. we wouldn't be in this shape.

I completely agree. We want a President that will kick ass and take names. Not someone that will agree with Obama on some issues and then say “He just doesn’t understand others.” I want McCain to come out swinging for a change. I am almost of the belief that if I have to live under socialism like Obama wants, I would rather live under a dictator that will kick butt and bring this nation back to its status as the most powerful nation in the world and you best not tread on my doorstep. A little extreme but what are the choices today.

Unless I heard wrong, McCain is going to be at the TRUMAN LIBRARY today.

No time like the present to start acting like ole Harry.

I'm sick and tired of hearin McCain say he will "reach across the aisle"! That may be good, but he's already gotten the people who care about that.

He needs to hit 0bama on his slimeball friends, on his lack of experience, on his naivete, etc. Every time Hussein says "John McCain voted this way or that way" McCain needs to point out that 0bama was in Indonesia attending a madrassa or on a trip to Pakistan [for what?] when he was making hard decisions!

The only one that could win it for McCain is John McCain and he ain’t doing it. That’s why I did not vote for him in the primaries. I didn’t think he had what it takes, and now Obama is walking all over him. It’s all going down the draim. Well maybe Palin will be able to turn it around in 2012.

McCain’s constant “reaching across the aisle” rhetoric is getting REAL old. This bunch of Democrats are your opponents. This Democrat CONGRESS is TERRIBLE and needs to be taken to the woodshed. He can’t be Harry Truman, but I think he’s thought he had to hide his temperamental side because of the media skewering him about it.

LEARN something at the TRUMAN library today, John. Please. (Hint: The American people are SICK of the Pelosi bunch.)

Democrats are playing on this and McCain doesn’t see it. He’s got to start doing what the American people want and then we can back him 100%. Shut down the socialist and then he can run with it. He may make some mistakes that the media will jump on but they can be handled. The media wants us to believe we can’t “handle” them but they are mistaken.

It doesn’t matter what the media does.

If McCain will take on Washington EVERY DAY, the message will get through. Stop “reassuring” us. The people are MAD AS HELL and they want SOMEONE...ANYONE!...in Washington to get as mad as they are!

McCain does not have fire in his belly. He thinks that Obamo is a nice guy and does not seem to comprehend what will happen if Obamo becomes President. It would be nice to see McCain get angry about some of Obamo’s comments and proposed ideas.
