OAKLAND An Oakland cookie company has closed its doors for good.
After operating in Oakland for 92 years, Mother's Cookies shut down when its parent company filed for bankruptcy protection Monday.
--snip--
In filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy .. company officials cited rising prices for raw materials and fuel.
Oh, man. They made great iced animal cookies, amongst others.
Did it crumble?
The Mother’s Cookies??
Oh no. I love the lemon filled tea biscuits.
An institution here in Oakland...but like Dole, the US Navy, GM, Ford, and other heavy industry and manufacturing...they will all resurface somewhere in the 3rd World at 1/10th the labor cost.
maybe not breaking news,..
another victim of the Do Nothing Don’t Drill Congre$$
one of many more to come as we slide deeper into a socialist morass
I just saw ‘em on sale cheap the other day.. better load up.
Thanks!
Sadly, it’s one of the few things I look forward to when going to CA
Thanks, my Dad was 2 in 1914.
Maybe we can get them from China, complete with extra melamine!
Ahhhhh! No more Iced Oatmeal Raisin cookies?
I fight feeding my sweet teeth. not hard but..
Just so they don’t have High Fructose Corn Syrup in them, that seems to be the latest boogeyman in the diet industry ...
The iced animal cookies are my favorite. I don’t know if I can take any more bad news.
92 years ago Oakland was probably a fine city.
Nooooooooooo!
I had a friend who worked for them. He did deliveries. He used to fill out his tax form and list his occupation as “Mothers Trucker”.
Now I am officially depressed. Their frosted animal cookies are my favorite cookie. What a bummer.
This was Oakland in 1872 (couldn't find a pic from 1916, which would be 92 years ago):
Did they manufacture the Girl Scout cookies? I thought they did so at one time, but can’t recall.
Those pink and white iced circus animals are the best. How sad.
from wikipedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Girl_Scout_cookies
Girl Scout cookies are made by large national commercial bakeries under license from Girl Scouts of the USA. The bakers that the organization licenses can change from year to year, though change is not common. In 2008 the licensed companies were Little Brownie Bakers (LBB), a subsidiary of Keebler, which is owned by Kellogg’s; and ABC Bakers, a subsidiary of Interbake Food, which is owned by George Weston Limited.[6][8] ABC Bakers has been making cookies for the Girl Scouts since 1939.[
Big Lots will probably get the remaining stock, so look for them there.....
Of course, Kalifornia’s high taxes had NOTHING to to with it... Ya, right.
OMG—I love those. Forget the stock market—This is the worst news I’ve heard all week!
But I moved to GEORGIA seven years ago!!!
Hmmm....maybe I can get my Mom to stash some for me. :)
See’s Candy. The most awesome confectionery on the entire planet....
Mmmmmm.
Got it for Christmas and Birthday...
Awesome choice.
Yes, it's a shame, and an indication of more to come.
Meanwhile we see the real serious posts on this thread. /sarc

For nearly two decades N.M Wheatley (who didn't care for his name of Noah and pronounced his middle name "Mike" although his French mother spelled it "Mique") worked hard as a hometown and foreign newspaper vendor at the corner of San Francisco's Market and Kearny streets. In 1914, he became curious about an elderly couple who passed by his newsstand every day carrying a covered basket filled with delicious home-baked, vanilla cookies they sold door-to-door. After trying one, Mique decided on the spot to purchase the rights to the recipe.
One doesn’t expect cookies to be a health food but IIRC the ingredient list on Mother’s Cookies did not inspire confidence. Maybe this has something to do with their downfall.
Moved from the Bay Area to Texas in 2001. The two things I really miss are See's Candy and good sourdough bread. My daughters that still live there send us care packages of both.
You don’t have Big Lots in Georgia?
Or, is it still called Pic’n’Save there....
Oh noooooooooooooooooooooooo, my family and I LOVE their chocolate chip cookies.
Just damn!
(snif!)
I never knew Frank Zappa was in the baking business.
Enchiladita, are you saying you can get them at Big Lot’s Still??
Polly waving from across town!
I loved See’s Candy when I lived in Seattle. Fanny May in Chicago was great too.
I don’t know, Polly. *Waving back* I was just “thinking out loud” and now I want something sweet!!
No more animal circus cookies?
I think the news may be responsible for the passing of Chucko the Clown. RIP.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Dam! Dam! those are my favorite {tears shedding}. Those have always been my favorite childhood cookies. Well I guess it is time to buy several bags of my favorite Ice Animals and stock them away and keep one unopened for eternity as a reminder of those “good old days”
Oh, we have Big Lots. I just figured they wouldn’t make it all the way back here.
I mean, I can’t get decent pizza, good Chinese food, garlic cheese, or sourdough bread(*sigh*) here!!
Sad to hear. Once upon a time long ago I did some contract hauling for the company. The Oakland plant is huge. My favorites are the Taffy cookie sandwiches — I’ll have to have a farewell feast.
Thanks, NR, don’t know why I thought the Girl Scout cookies were from Mother’s. Kind of sad to see a longtime brand close up shop.
Is Mother finally retiring?
I know, with the sprinkles on them...just damn.
CA is Taxing this companys out of business or deciding to move the company out of state to survive.
