Tempers flare as Ill. Senate candidates face off

October 9, 2008

FROM THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Republican challenger Steve Sauerberg accused incumbent U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin of endangering troops in Iraq by criticizing the treatment of prisoners at Guantanamo Bay, prompting an outraged response from Durbin as the two debated Thursday night.

''I don't know where the bottom is anymore in your campaign. Why don't you debate the issues?'' Durbin said. ''Common decency still works.''

''It does still work,'' Sauerberg shot back, ''and you should have shown it in your remarks about our troops.''

*snip*

Durbin, the No. 2 Democrat in the Senate, is seeking a third term, arguing that he has both the clout and the policies to help Illinoisans.

But Sauerberg, a newcomer to politics, describes Durbin as one of the true insiders who has contributed to failure and gridlock in Washington

*snip*

''I do not apologize for bringing to the attention of the people of the United States of America his behaviors that I think have probably led to possibly more troop hazard in Iraq than if he hadn't made them,'' Sauerberg said. ''This emboldens the enemy. This probably puts our soldiers in danger.''

Sauerberg was largely referring to a comment Durbin made in 2005 saying prisoners at Guantanamo Bay were receiving treatment that sounded like something ''done by Nazis, Soviets in their gulags or some mad regime.'' The comment made no reference to U.S. troops.

*snip*

He also called it ''reaching very, very low'' to question an opponent's patriotism.

So what if Durbin made no reference to U.S. troops? It still put our soldiers in danger.

That was the point that Sauerberg was making, and it is a valid one.

IMO Durbin and Murtha are traitors.

I was tempted to watch this debate, but I am so sick of 0bama and the crap in this state which spreads to Washington that I couldn't do it.

Needless to say, Sauerberg has my vote. DICK Durbin should be kicked to the curb, but I just don't know if Chicagoans have had enough to 'throw the bums out'.

Well, who was allegedly giving this Nazi-like treatment if not the soldiers, AP Stelth (sic) author?

Moving to a red state is the only option.  There is NOWHERE else in the world to go, except a blood red state in America.

I'm jealous.

Isn't that sad though? Tells you what kind of state we're in.

Then it was very low of Ms. Pelosi to do the same. And why not call a spade a spade. Patriotism isn't some amorphous concept. You support your government in time of national danger.

I dunno, I don’t have the quote on hand, but I do make permanent checks against politicians for such comments and Durbin has such a check ~ in my book.

In osome states this guy is a traitor. In Illinois he is a senator.

What’s wrong with having all of the candidates debate together? There actually are six candidates running for this U.S. Senate seat. I’m a registered Republican, but I will always find it ridiculous when all of the serious, legitimate candidates are not included during all of the debates at every political level from the POTUS all the way down to the most local levels of political office. I always believe in fairness in the political system, and pretending that all of U.S. politics really just involves the Democrats and Republicans will always be silly and unfair to everybody else.

Quite so. I consider it psychological warfare on the part of the media to delibererately disassociate the ever-increasing radicalization of the Democrat party from the color of international Socialism/Communism. But the Republicans didn’t have to swallow being labelled “Reds.” I sure as hell haven’t, and I won’t use it. Red state means Democrat, Blue means Republican. Frankly, if we can’t even win these little battles with our enemies defining us instead of us defining ourselves, we’ve already lost the war.

When working my poll sheets pluses and minuses in Chicago’s old 12th ward.(Where by the way I carried Pete Bensinger over Richard J in a mayoral election, 12pct 12th ward) I used to drive the committeeman Richard Anderson nuts because I’d mark my Republicans in blue and the Dems in red. I still challenge the MSM color scheme http://www.theusmat.com/

I still live here, but I fully understand your sentiment.

Unfortunately, the dims have had a lock on this state for the last 25 years because the stupid GOP party here keeps putting up inept and unqualified candidates for state office.

I really don't think the Illinois GOP gives a damn whether they win elections or not.

Funny, last time I checked there are FIVE candidates on the ballot. But according to the liberal media, you're only "allowed" to listen to TWO of them.

Freepers, don't be misled. Sauerberg is a pro-abortion, pro-gun control, pro-Hillarycare, pro-gay rights, tree-hugging RINO. He is a sacrifical lamb put up by the same people who gave us Topinka, and has NO chance of "beating Durbin".

The gutless wonder even caved during the Chicago Tribune candidate meeting and APOLOGIZED for attacking Durbin over his troop statement and then shook Dick's hand and "thanked" him for his "excellent work" on veteran's issues.

What a joke. Right now he can't even break 30% in the polls and could lose every county in the state. I'd LOVE to see arrogant socialist blowhard Durbin thrown out of office this year, but Sauerberg is not the guy who can do it. Read today's post about LaHood to see what happens when you support combine candidates. By voting for him, all you'll be doing is giving conservative votes to a RINO and encourging the ILGOP to run more gutless RINOs because the base will rubber stamp. Please don't do that.

Sauerberg backs down when forced to confront Durbin

Sauerberg falls behind Durbin by 34 points

Sauerberg or Koppie for U.S. Senate -- who the best to Defeat Dick Durbin?

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/2099382/posts

So in summary:

Sauerberg is a career medical doctor who has no experience or political record for the nation’s highest legislative office. On the issues, he supports keeping abortion legal, favors gun control measures like the assault weapons ban, pro-gay rights, pro-UN, supports federal involvement in health care, welcomes free trade (even with communist nations), supports tax cuts, favors off shore drilling, is pro-WOT, believe in global warming, opposes the bailout, is vaguely against “blanket” amnesty, supports the department of education and NOLB, and is open to confirming just about anyone, regardless of ideology.

Koppie is a retired senior jumbo jet captain and farmer who has long been active in politics -- having held both elected and appointed office -- and is well qualified to be U.S. Senator, with a record of proven leadership. On the issues, he is unabashedly 100% pro-life, strongly supports 2nd amendment rights, opposes the gay agenda, strongly believes in U.S. sovereignty, opposes the feds being involved in health care and education, is strongly in favor of tax cuts and spending reductions, favors off shore drilling and ANWR, is pro-WOT, opposes the cult of global warming, opposes the bailout, is clearly against amnesty, and has promised to vote to confirm ONLY originalist and strict constructionist judges.

Which one would you want replacing Durbin and representing us in the U.S. Senate?

>> But the Republicans didn’t have to swallow being labelled “Reds.” I sure as hell haven’t, and I won’t use it. <<

The sad fact is alot of conservatives HAVE accepted the MSM talking points (some freepers here even heard the MSM line that Bush wouldn't be President without Katherine Harris so much, that they drank the kool-aid and figured he "owed" her a Senate seat because she "gave" him the Presidency)

This is very apparent in Illinois where Family Taxpayers Network and other conservative groups have been "proudly" using the "red" idenity, and it's worked! They're certainly gotten results to make Illinois "red" like they want. Combine candidates like LaHood, Topinka, and Sauerberg are working hard to make Illinois "redder" than ever.
