Minnesota Sen. Norm Coleman, locked in an increasingly tight and bitter election contest with Democrat Al Franken, said Friday that his campaign would halt negative advertising in a race recently dominated by it.
Coleman, a Republican, said the unstable economy demands that the race focus on issues. He said he would also ask independent groups advertising on his behalf to pull negative ads, although by law they are not required to do so.
"I decided I was not all that interested in returning to Washington for another six years based on the judgment of voters that I was not as bad as the other guys," Coleman said. "I want folks to vote for me, and not against the other folks."
Coleman said it could take a few days to pull negative messages from the airwaves, the Internet and direct-mail pleas. He also left himself room to draw contrasts "in experience, judgement and temperament."

Franken is POSITIVELY an idiot.
sighs
The republican party deserves to be extinct.
First McCain defends Obama at a Republican rally, now this. What next, Republican candidates conceding before election day?
I guess today is the day that what was left of a GOP that had fight in it is finished.
I think the marching orders are being heard around the world.
Time to get rid of the OLD Republicans and in with the NEW...
Translation, “Welcome, Senator Franken.”
We are going to be saddled with the sickest collection of losers and lunatics EVER assembled in the Capitol buildings, and that’s saying something!
Game over, man!
Losers doing what losers do best: losing.
BU A VERY DANGEROUS IDIOT! With Absolutely NO MORALS OR ETHICS!
I was thinking “what an idiot”,
Then I scrolled down to your response..
>> The republican party deserves to be extinct.
I was just thinking the same thing. You put it more diplomatically than I would have. That’s to your credit.
>> what was left of a GOP that had fight in it is finished
The Republican party has absolutely no idea of what it is they should fight *for*. So how can they fight?
Our party is being sissified!!
Take that skirt off Coleman, and FIGHT!!!
Well, Senator McCain has now just done to me what the Democrats couldn’t have: he has killed my spirit.
I left that moribund party the day they left Clinton skate by on impeachment. I have no respect for any party that insists on playing by the Marquis of Queensbury rules, when their opponents are kidney punching and kicking in the gonads.
Our only hope was to “drag him across the finish line” knowing the life expectancy issue would be in our favor. Now he digs in and refuses to move but backwards. I’m very angry and all those other descriptives.
The "OLD Republicans" are eliminating themselves.
However, the NEW are things like Al Franken.
It won't be until these foaming lunatics mess up really, REALLY, REALLY bad that we will be rid of them.
Basically, a Senate seat is a career-long appointment.
It must be a judgement against us from God.
I can’t believe I am actually considering voting for Barr
The only logical reason for Coleman is that his polling shows him with a solid lead and he’s trying to “freeze the ball” hoping to run the clock out.
On the other hand if we can’t stand up to internal foes like Franken and Hussein, then how can we stand up to Iran and Osama?
You're going to have to convince me they have gonads. Christ if you cant beat a twit like Franken. Then its time to start over.
McCain/Palin will win VA/NC/OH/FL.
They're gonna win the race for the White House. The only question is how many of the following states they take along for the ride: CO, NH, WI, PA, MN, MI, IA. With still over three weeks to go, I think they're in good shape to take all but MI and IA.
In 3 1/2 weeks there will be a ton of people on FR talking about McCain's "comeback" and how he "took off the gloves" and all sorts of other nonsense. And when the polls mysteriously close (read: stop oversampling Democrats so drastically) His campaign has been very consistent so far, and quite effective. I see no reason to expect major changes over the next few weeks, except we could see him return to Michigan.
Then by all means stay home and cry.
It took 20 posts to come across someone who gets it. That’s really sad.
With a heavy heart, I concur.
I’m opening a business selling white flags to Republican candidates.
A heavy heart? You just admitted that you took your ball and went home in 1999. Quite a convincing story, though. LOL
The negative ads by Norm and the idiot Franken have gotten Barkley up to 18%. This is exactly what happened in 1998 when Jesse Ventura stormed past both Norm and Hubert III at the finish line. Norm knows exactly what he’s doing and isn’t going to make the same mistake again. At this point, every negative ad by both he and Franken are ads for Barkley. Norm’s in the lead. He’ll beat Franken. He needs to avoid losing to Barkley. Today’s move was a good one.
“in experience, judgement and temperament.”
Is he really stopping them then?
MC,
In his defense, I must say that the MSM has grabbed onto this shit like we are all dressed in sheets ready to string some people up. Asswipe Gergen is at it again tonight saying McCain needs to “calm down” his crowds. They are trying to make this into something it’s not. I think he’s just doing damage control. They’re happy to distract from their boy.

Exactly right about these politicians really do know how to run campaigns. I had heard the third party dude was making traction up there. But 18% is fairly impressive. I bet you've hit the nail on the head.
What, (with all do respects), gives you any hope for the Republican party as currently constructed?
OK,
Thanx for slapping me in the face. I needed that. Starting to sound like a few others that moan and groan regularly. Sorry, just wasn’t using my head, feeling sorry for myself.
If he says he’ll change his position and Drill Anwr and offshore within 50 miles , he might win going away.. or not.
Native Minnesotan BumP
Sarah Palin and Mike Pence, for starters.
Buy a bunch! You can rip them into shreds and sell them as bandages when Obama's goons riot on November 4th and 5th after he loses.
Americans are in for a long hard ride.
We all know who the press accuses of dirty politics. We also know who is really guilty of it.
Very well said and I couldn’t agree more! I am with you 100% — shame some others don’t have a clue about when to attack and when to pull back. Glad they are not running any campaigns.
To beat frankin about all we have to do is keep posting the picture of him in diapers from the SNL show, its hard to even look at it..have you seen it? I think its real, not photoshopped ...makes me shudder thinking of it.
I forgot to include New Mexico in my list of states McCain/Palin can certainly win. My apologies to those living in the Land of Enchantment.
This isn’t about nice or honorable. It is about winning and this was the right move.
I guess you and I are watching two different campaigns. McCain has been pounding that Marxist putz. Maybe not exactly as you or I would like (I want more Franklin Raines and Johnson!), but to claim he’s rolled over or doesn’t want to win is just absurd.
There's nobody wishes that more than I. Sorry, but the American voting public really gives me the blues.
Me, too. It drives me nuts that some idiot who can barely feed himself has his vote count as much as mine. But I'm not giving up. And the voters collectively aren't dumb so much as they're lazy. So I blame the corrupt, biased media. If we had true journalists in this country, actually presenting facts and both sides of issues, the Dems might hold 25% of the seats in each house of Congress.
why doesnt the RNC just run ads with pictures of Obama, pelosi, fraken etc.. holding puppies and bunny rabbits all while passing out candy to orphans. They would probably be lest costly and as effective.
You know what? Neither am I. I'd rather go down swinging. Thanks! You've truly made me feel better.
I was also "an officer and a gentleman" once; that doesn't apply when your country is at stake.
