Would Romney Be Doing Better?
The New Republic via The Spartan Truth ^ | Michael Crowley

Posted on 10/10/2008 10:57:34 PM PDT by Gator_that_eats_Dems

The economy is collapsing and the GOP is stuck with a candidate who doesn't know jack about economics. But what if Mitt Romney had won that hard-fought Florida primary and grabbed the nomination? Romney's whole business career was about turning around distressed companies. Plus, he's far less identified with George W. Bush than is McCain. And unlike McCain he might not have had to give up on Michigan, where his father was governor. (What state pray tell is McCain holding that Mitt couldn't?)

I know there are plenty of strikes against the guy. But it's an interesting counterfactual to consider--one that makes a lot more sense now that foreign policy has all but disappeared from the conversation.

P.S. Good point from commenter timteeter:

Or for that matter if McCain had sucked it up and made Romney his VP.

You might've had far less base enthusiasm at convention time, but delivering a strong economic message right now could've been far easier.

Will we ever be free of Willard propagandists?

If Romney was the candidate, HBO would play “Big Love” reruns 24/7. It would be the Big Love network.

The real question is: Where is Mitt Romney NOW? He could help McCain/Palin in Colorado and Nevada.

He would have been attacked for being a Banksta.

Btw, Romney was for the bailout as well.

THINK CONSERVATIVE.

RINO economics is what got us here. Reagan gets us out. Listen to the House Republicans.

Where is Mitt Romney NOW?

He got the message that he wasn't welcome in the GOP.

Against Obama, Romney would be in worse shape than McCain. Giuliani would have done better at fighting back and making his case against Obama, but sadly, most conservatives would have tuned out by now if Giuliani were the GPO nominee.

As much as I dislike Huckabee and Giuliani alone, Huckabee would have picked him to balance the ticket and they would be beating the tar out of Obama right now.

Huckabee and Giuliani both would have been tearing Obama to pieces and doing it with humor. Something McCain lacks.

Such a pity that message couldn't have also been delivered to McQueeg last year.

If only his ‘supporters’ would get the same message. We’d all be better off...

As much as it pains me...the Huckster/911 ticket was the one to beat Obama.

Agreed. McCain was tougher than Romney and a better CiC. McCain should try now to recruit Romney to be his man to work on curing the economy like he cured the Olympics etc..

Yes, but Romney would be doing worse. At least the dead squirrel didn’t impose socialized medicine and call it conservatism.

DEAD SQUIRREL/PALIN 2008!!
Change is coming!

Of the persons that McCain defeated in the primaries, the only other one that I think would be doing as well (or better) is Rudy Guliani. Imagine: a former federal prosecutor going up against Obama and his many questionable associations (ACORN, Ayers, Rezko, et. cet.). It would have been great fun.

NO.

Christians would stay home. Virginia and North Carolina would be blue. Georgia would be a swing state.

Pro-life and pro-family/pro-marriage organizations would be protesting.

2nd Amendment conservatives would be upset.

And Obama would be singing loud and long about republicans having a member of the white and delightsome Mormons on their ticket.

I guess to some people, the grass always looks greener on the other side, even if the other side is a desert.
