A group of San Francisco first-graders took an unusual field trip to City Hall on Friday to toss rose petals on their just-married lesbian teacher - putting the public school children at the center of a fierce election battle over the fate of same-sex marriage.
The 18 Creative Arts Charter School students took a Muni bus and walked a block at noon to toss rose petals and blow bubbles on their just-married teacher Erin Carder and her wife Kerri McCoy, giggling and squealing as they mobbed their teacher with hugs.
Mayor Gavin Newsom, a friend of a friend, officiated.
A parent came up with the idea for the field trip - a surprise for the teacher on her wedding day.
"She's such a dedicated teacher," said the school's interim director Liz Jaroflow.
But there was a question of justifying the field trip academically. Jaroflow decided she could.
"It really is what we call a teachable moment," Jaroflow said, noting the historic significance of same-sex marriage and related civil rights issues. "I think I'm well within the parameters."
Nonetheless, the excursion offers Proposition 8 proponents fresh ammunition for their efforts to outlaw gay marriage in California, offering a real-life incident that echoes their recent television and radio ads.
"It's just utterly unreasonable that a public school field trip would be to a same-sex wedding," said Chip White, press secretary for the Yes on 8 campaign. "This is overt indoctrination of children who are too young to have an understanding of its purpose."
The trip illustrates the message promoted by the campaign in recent days, namely that unless Prop. 8 passes on Nov. 4, children will learn about same-sex marriage in school.

The next step is persecuting people who profess normal standards of behavior. Expect there to be "hate" legislation, churches that don't hold gay wedding ceremonies will be declared illegal, talk radio and independent news sources shut down. It is not enough that they play in their own cesspool - they want to drag everyone else in it.
I seem to recall something in the New Testament about harming children and millstones. These people seem eligible.

I really do not see the big deal. It is a Charter School, not a public school and it would seem that none of the kids were taken to the wedding against their will or without the consent of their parents.

The director of the school thinks its within her limits to bring students to a lesbian wedding? No boundaries and a sick cookie.
How come if she is such a dedicated teacher as mentioned in another sentence she got married on a school day. I cannot imagine when I was at school any of my teachers marrying on a school day it would have had to be a Saturday or during school holidays.
One problem I suppose with the charter system the same as could happen with the proposal in Britain to encourage more groups of parents to start schools within our state system which a greater say over the ciriculum taught. the set up and how and what is taught is much freer and encouragement for religious bodies such as the Church of England to more involved and as long as the children sit and the majority pass crtical development/education tests and at various ages there is much less interference.
The problem I see with your Charter system and what we are just starting (in some cases have been running for a while) is that it is sadly open to abuse of what could be used to create a more balanced education than the normal public/state schools provide.

We have already passed that step - if one extrapolates the erosion of personal freedoms and growth of government that I have seen since I was a boy in the fifties - there is little reason to expect that anything less than total governmental control within the next 25 years.
The cars that you drive will be limited, the amount of energy that you consume will be regulated, the ingredients in the food that you eat will be regulated, the school curriculums will be even more controlled, radio and TV will be regulated, your right to free speech will be limited, the wages that one earns - even in the private sector will be controlled and harshly taxed to redistribute all of the wealth in the country, personal privacy will become a memory.
All of these things, which are in the process of implementation NOW would have been unthinkable 50 years ago.
My only hope is that as the pace and frequency of these “freedom takebacks” increases due to the sickness of those who are controlling the government - the changes will become outrageous enough to spark a backlash from those who remember how it used to be.
I remember being dragged by my CATHOLIC school for a rally for JFK. I was 17...and it was a kick....and a day off from school.
When I was ready to vote for the first time, my dad sat me down and told me about the Kennedy family.
If I had to do it again, I would have stayed in school...rather than getting a free hat and a day off.
I was just plain ignorant.
