Congressman's $121,000 Payoff to Alleged Mistress Tim Mahoney Elected to Remove 'Ethical Cloud' of His Disgraced Predecessor, Mark Foley By EMMA SCHWARTZ, RHONDA SCHWARTZ, and VIC WALTER

Oct. 13, 2008—

West Palm Beach Congressman Tim Mahoney (D-FL), whose predecessor resigned in the wake of a sex scandal, agreed to a $121,000 payment to a former mistress who worked on his staff and was threatening to sue him, according to current and former members of his staff who have been briefed on the settlement, which involved Mahoney and his campaign committee.

Mahoney, who is married, also promised the woman, Patricia Allen, a $50,000 a year job for two years at the agency that handles his campaign advertising, the staffers said.

A Mahoney spokesperson would not answer questions about the alleged affair or the settlement, but said Allen resigned of her own accord and "has not received any special payment from campaign funds."

Senior Democratic leaders in the House of Representatives, including Rep. Rahm Emanuel (D-IL), the chair of the Democratic Caucus, have been working with Mahoney to keep the matter from hurting his re-election campaign, the Mahoney staffers said.

A spokesperson for Emanuel denies that account, but said Emanuel did confront Mahoney "upon hearing a rumor" about an affair in 2007 and "told him he was in public life and had a responsibility to act accordingly." The spokesperson added that it was a "private conversation" that had nothing to do with Mahoney's re-election prospects.

West Palm Beach Congressman Tim Mahoney (D-FL), whose predecessor resigned in the wake of a sex scandal...

So does this mean that Mahoney will also get the Mark Foley treatment, or is that just reserved for Republicans, or specifically, gay Republicans?

Reserved exclusively for Republicans. While Mark Foley broke no laws and engaged in no adult minor physical contact, he was still hounded by a partisan press that sat on the details (as provided them by the DNC) until late in the election cycle. The subsequent congressional investigation (brought on because of Democrats’ attempts to smear the entire GOP as knowing and doing nothing) showed that the Democrats and media knew even more and did nothing. And while Foley was being smeared, a Democrat died who 30+ years earlier had sex with his aides and remained in office (at a time when it was criminal). The Democrats honored him for his daring breakthrough for the homosexual politician movement.

More than any other single example, since Foley was held up as an example of this “culture of corruption” and blame was also smeared on the GOP “who knew”, here the MAN WHO REPLACED a shamed congressman is also in a sexual scandal and HIS PARTY “knew”.

So Mr. Emanual is pulling the standard Clinton defense of, "I'm not unethical, I'm an incompetent boob. I'm totally incapable of doing my job." See also: Travel Office, Billing Records, Vince Foster Investigation, etc.

Our favorite political consultant, Bill Fletcher, is in the news. One of his clients, Florida Congressman Tim Mahoney, reportedly agreed to a $121,000 payment to a former mistress who worked on Mahoney’s staff and was threatening to sue him. As part of the deal, the woman, Patricia Allen, was promised a $50,000-a-year job at Fletcher’s agency, ABC News says.

The agreement between the congressman and Allen, reportedly promises her a job for two years at Fletcher Rowley Chao Riddle or another company, beginning January 2009. Fletcher Rowley, a Nashville-based political consulting firm that offers “crisis management and creative strategy,” lists Mahoney’s 2006 election victory as one of its “success stories,” according to its website.

The firm’s CEO, Bill Fletcher, strongly denied any knowledge of the settlement or any promise of employment to Allen. “I know nothing of the like,” he told ABC News. “There is no such agreement. There is no arrangement.”

According to Fletcher, all funds paid to his company by the Mahoney for Congress campaign were properly accounted for. “I’ve made no payments to any third party,” he said.

According to people briefed on the settlement Allen was promised at least $50,000 a year or other employment if the Fletcher Rowley job fell through.

In one of life’s little ironies, Mahoney’s predecessor was Mark Foley, who resigned in another sex scandal. You recall that Foley was caught sending creepy Internet messages to congressional pages. There have always been suspicions that it was Fletcher who secretly peddled that scandal to the media.

For more, see Braisted and Kleinheider.

Update: Statement from Fletcher Rowley: “As of today, FRCR, Inc. has resigned from Tim Mahoney’s campaign and permanently ended our relationship with him. According to ABC News, Tim Mahoney apparently included our company in a secret legal settlement without the knowledge of our firm. Our firm did not agree to any legal settlement. If these allegations are true Tim Mahoney’s actions are unacceptable and not in line with FRCR’s business ethics.
