The Nation -- The elections in Iran are nearly a year away, but it's encouraging to see the emerging possibility of a new bid for the presidency by former President Mohammad Khatami. Last week, he hinted that he's considering running against Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the nutball whose support lies mainly in the paramilitary Basij force and elements of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps. Can Khatami ju-jitsu the all-powerful Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Khamenei and his election-rigging Guardian Council? Can Khatami loom so large that even Khamenei might choose to support him over Ahmadinejad? Might Khamenei decide to back Khatami as part of a strategy to open a dialogue with the United States?

-excerpt-

On Monday, several top world leaders -- including Kofi Annan, the former head of the UN, the former prime ministers of Italy and France, and the former president of Ireland -- visited Tehran to join Khatami in a "dialogue of civilizations."

If Obama should somehow win (heaven forbid), the regime might very well bring back Khatami, knowing that his smile will fool Obama and the democrats, and allow the regime to make a deal with Obama that it could never get with McCain.

This author and the democrats haven't figured out yet, that there's NO difference between Iran's presidents, because they all answer to and take orders from Khamenei.

Good grief. Khatami as our great hope AGAIN? Khamenei calls the shots in Iran on the stuff that matters anyway. The president is nothing but the mayor of the entire country.

Obama has made that point every time he's called on his statement of talks without preconditions. He's used it to prove Palin’s ignorance.

I think the writer, Robert Dreyfuss, got a thrill up his leg just thinking about the return of Khatami.
